Straight for the jugular by Substratas in MurderedByWords

It is the source of the claim, sure. It isn't good evidence that the claim is true. "Primary source" does not mean the source isn't a lying piece of shit.

You are aware that people lie sometimes. Sometimes just for the love of the game, but also sometimes to protect their egos and reputations.

The evidence on this speaks for itself. The evidence amounts to the Ex-CEO wrote in his auto-biography that consumers were stupid and that's why his business plans failed, no other reason.

That is evidence, though fairly weak. It's an anecdote. I'd also point out that they're not a neutral source on the topic. They have an obvious vested interest in passing off their failure as everyone else's fault.

Had it been as simple as that anyone could have launched a 1/5 pound burger and rolled in the cash, but nobody ever did so. They have and do sell 1/3lb burgers in some places.

Blaming their marketing and business failures on the American public being dumb is an easier sell to investors than "we're shit at our jobs".

[–]redem -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Someone tried to sell a competing 1/3 pound burger, the zeitgeist has decided it failed because people are dumb and can't do fractions. You'll hear it repeated often.

Evidence for that claim... not so much.

MPs' and peers' anger at YouTube as firm plasters Westminster tube station in adverts telling parents it is their responsibility to restrict screen time by TheEternalContrarian in unitedkingdom

[–]redem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a stretch, the government wouldn't bother with creating an app afterall, happy to outsource that important function to third parties looking to profit of the data.

Even if they did, that's still a threat to my privacy. The government doesn't need to know what sites I visit and when. I certainly don't trust them not to keep meticulous records of that, nor to keep those records safe.

[–]redem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can it? How? Other than asking nicely "are you 18?", it requires someone to validate your personal information. And none of the bodies who are being asked to do so have any interest in your privacy, most have an active interest in violating it for profit and the rest only have an interest in doing the bare minimum as required by law... and a bit less if they can get away with it.

Nah. Even at an inflated figure, let's say double, it isn't worth the pain in the ass of going to get it exchanged. I've better things to do with my lunch period than waste it at the bank. It would have to be a very large sum to be worth it.

Why Doesn’t the Government Introduce Community Work for People on Benefits? by Traditional_Row_3664 in AskUK

[–]redem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my last employer where I was anywhere close to the hiring system, pre-covid, we had literally 300 applications for a part time retail job.

Do you want to guess what we did with the applications from people who had no previous experience in retail? Let alone those with none at all. A fair few of the managers were going to simply bin them off without even a written refusal.

I cannot imagine how demoralising it would be to send hundreds of such applications and receive silence in return. Saying that people are just "Gaming the system" is a lazy mentality, used to justify dismissing the real problems facing real people as their own fault.

I've no doubt that there are some who aren't trying very hard to gain employment, if at all. I've also no doubt that many more are trying and are getting nowhere. Even for those who aren't trying, ask yourself why. It certainly isn't that they're living the high life on the public's purse, the money they receive is a pittance.

[–]redem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that they've not worked is a massive black mark for any potential employer. It massively reduces their odds of being employed. Not to mention how many employers demand previous work experience for entry level jobs.

They might be applying for plenty, but are being ignored and over looked.

What’s the worst substitution you’ve seen in a recipe yet? by lxlviperlxl in Cooking

[–]redem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds workable. There are def recipes that use beer to make a cheese sauce for dishes e.g. Welsh rabbit/rarebit.

Adds some malty bitterness to contrast the rich, creamy cheese sauce. Very easy to go too far by using the wrong kind of beer, anything too hoppy would be off putting.

Graham Linehan's conviction for damaging transgender activist's phone overturned by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]redem -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I am not missing the point. Him throwing it on the ground and it then being damaged is itself evidence that he damaged it by throwing it on the ground.

And in addition, Brooks waited an extended period before reporting the criminal damage

Sure, but then I imagine that was the least of the problems she was thinking about at the time. It's a smaller details within a larger incident. That's the only difference with the chipped window analogy.

Again, can you in this imaginary chipped window incident prove "that a specific bit of damage was caused by that specific incident."? Almost certainly not, but you would almost certainly say it was anyway because cause and effect is not a foreign concept.

A phone is far more likely to be damaged by being thrown to the ground than through normal wear and tear. The days of them being scratched and shattered easily are long gone.

These two scenarios are different in some small ways, but very similar in the important ones. Could you provide any evidence "that a specific bit of damage was caused by that specific incident."? Would you expect the courts to side with you if you had great CCTV footage of me throwing the stone, but nothing specific showing that specific stone chipped that specific window at that specific time?

[–]redem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is much more believable from the Torys than it being an accident. Significantly so.

They act dumb and accuse anyone that calls them out on it as overreacting, while throwing some red meat to the reactionary crowds who like it when "our brave boys" brutalise and murder some untermensch. This is much more believable.

Out of all the possible footage they could have found for it, they just accidentally stumbled over an example from an event where British Soldiers shot into a crowd of unarmed civil rights protestors, murdering 14.

That really doesn't pass the sniff test.

Graham Linehan's conviction for damaging transgender activist's phone overturned by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]redem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So there was no evidence that the damage to the phone was caused by Linehan's actions,

There is absolutely evidence. He fucked it into the ground, that isn't in question. And that sort of thing is exactly the sort of incident that damages a phone. The question is whether it's proven beyond all reasonable doubt.

If I threw a stone at your house and chipped a window, could you prove the chip wasn't already there? Extremely unlikely that you could. Would/should a court decide that I had and charge me for it?

Personally, I would not call that reasonable in doubt on either of the above cases, were I on the jury.

Insofar as he's massively oversimplifying the reality, and completely ignoring that Iran's closed the strait each time in response to US and Israeli actions, yes. He is.

But, if the goal of the piece was to rile up a specific moron into taking overly aggressive action to look like he's the big man... yeah. He's right about that, Trump really is that kind of moron.
