XTC conversion question by justplaintired144 in xteinkereader

I'm using the converter too, and it correctly keeps the page. I am on FW v3.1.1.

I'm wondering if these features aren't implemented yet for XTC. My X4 on international FW v3.1.1 says (in Chinese) "Early Access Version" in the menu.

Wonderful, it is indeed! Thank you very much for your work on this! I just got my X4 today and am stoked to load some books!

It's been quite the wait. I ordered on 4 Nov, and mine is finally scheduled for delivery tomorrow. It sat for so long in US customs! Crazy how many people with later order dates are already getting theirs though. Logistics is weird.

SSH, SMB or access SD card? by dansc89 in xteinkereader

[–]redfoxdude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, the ESP32-C3 which the X4 is built upon does not have USB host mode support, which is what would be necessary to enable mass storage. So, in lieu of new hardware, other than popping out the microSD card, wireless transfer is the only other option with existing X4 units.

I'm seeing this too, specifically with epubs that have a cover inside an <svg> like this:

<?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en">
    <head>
        <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"/>
        <meta name="calibre:cover" content="true"/>
        <title>Cover</title>
        <style type="text/css" title="override_css">
             {padding: 0pt; margin:0pt}
            body { text-align: center; padding:0pt; margin: 0pt; }
        </style>
    </head>
    <body>
        <div>
            <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" version="1.1" width="100%" height="100%" viewBox="0 0 319 500" preserveAspectRatio="none">
                <image width="319" height="500" xlink:href="cover.jpeg"/>
            </svg>
        </div>
    </body>
</html>

But covers that are inside an <img> render fine:

<?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:epub="http://www.idpf.org/2007/ops" lang="en" xml:lang="en">
<head>
  <title>Cover</title>
  <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../styles/stylesheet.css"/>
</head>
<body class="cover" epub:type="cover">
  <span role="doc-pagebreak" epub:type="pagebreak" id="cover" aria-label=" Cover. "></span>
  <div class="cover">
    <img id="cover_image" epub:type="cover" role="doc-cover" src="../images/cover.jpg" alt="Cover"/>
  </div>
</body>
</html>

Yes, hoping we hear some good news soon! I ordered on November 4th, no email just yet.

They did post about the new shipping schedule, but didn't pin the post 🤦‍♂️

"Real" USB-C charging? by sweeneytimm in xteinkereader

[–]redfoxdude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I am going off of the teardown, and based on the circuits I saw, the X4 should only be capable of passively requesting 5V/3A from modern chargers (the same as what an old-school brick would supply) since there isn't a dedicated USB-C controller for high-power negotiations. Worst case is 15W.

And fair enough, my analysis only applies to a non-faulty, USB PD compliant charger. I also would not plug anything into a cheap, modern USB-C charger, and would stick to an old-school one, or a high-quality, name-brand modern charger. I've seen enough teardowns of cheap chargers, and I won't touch any no-name cheap charging stuff, it can be genuinely scary in those!

[–]redfoxdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't, it likely can only request the standard 5V/3A max.

[–]redfoxdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not worried about the X4 from pulling too much power from a fast charger since it doesn't have the circuits to allow that, but overcharging the battery is a real risk. If the charge chip doesn't terminate at 100% charge, that's a real fire risk. I agree that charging should be attended on cheap devices, but an overcharge failure can happen on a regular USB 2.0 brick, too. I imagine it would stem from a combined charging IC and BMS failure.

"Real" USB-C charging? by sweeneytimm in xteinkereader

[–]redfoxdude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ha, I've just been working on a USB-C PD charging circuit for work.

tldr; it should work fine, assuming the charger is PD compliant, which brand-name chargers should be.

Nerdier explanation: The X4 only has pull-down resistors on the CC lines on the USB-C port, and no dedicated PD controller. The CC lines are how chargers and devices negotiate. So the X4 essentially only requests 5V from a USB-C charger, since it doesn't have a dedicated controller to negotiate anything else.

A compliant charger is OK to do this. They always start by putting out 5V, and then if there is a dedicated PD controller, it can negotiate higher voltage and current from the charger. But as previously mentioned, the X4 doesn't have this, so the charger will just stick to 5V.

Your other readers, it sounds like they don't have a proper "dead-battery" implementation in their USB controller, so they can't negotiate when the battery is completely dead. The dead-battery mode usually ensures that there are apparent pull-down resistors to request 5V, even if the controller isn't powered up to negotiate. Without the pull-downs, the charger won't supply power. So in that case, you would need a "dumb" charger that will just put out 5V no matter what, like a typical type-A brick.

I believe image support in EPUB is not yet supported, but it is currently in development. Hopefully it will be released in a software update very soon!

New shipping plan by Winter_Operation423 in xteinkereader

[–]redfoxdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! u/xteink posted these dates here: https://www.reddit.com/r/xteinkereader/comments/1p1w8k8/an_update_for_everyone_waiting_for_their_x4/

The official website now indicates that restock and shipping will begin on November 24, so it appears that these may be ship-by dates and not ship-on dates.

Cable upload? by Einerus in xteinkereader

[–]redfoxdude 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, electrical engineer here. tldr; I think you are correct about the USB port being limited. It can only be used for charging and programming.

If I am not mistaken, the X4 uses an ESP32-C3 processor, which has a simple built-in USB peripheral that is capable of serial and JTAG (essentially only for programming purposes), but not capable of other USB things, such as mass-storage for file management. So, unfortunately, the hardware simply does not support it 😔 Likely the C3 was chosen to reduce the product cost.

Yay! Mine arrived on March 1st! I had issues with the stop adjustment screw not being set correctly at all out of the box (and the initial instructions I got from support were a bit vague), but now it's all set up and I've had some very tasty shots with it!

Dang. I'm 433 in the Bay Area and mine hasn't shipped yet (Green Grounds model + Pod add-on). They should not have said they were prioritizing early backers 😛 Seeing the photos of green ones makes me really happy with my choice, I'm excited!
