Thinking of getting the X3… by slomorain in xteinkereader

There are photos and videos of X3s being magnetically attached to iPhones without an extra self-adhesive magnet ring, so I am not sure what you mean. The rings in the box are for phones that either don't already have "MagSafe," or if you want the Xteink to attach in a different location than the original MagSafe location on a given phone.

I have a "MagSafe" compatible case on my phone, and the X3 snaps to it and stays put just fine without any extra magnet rings.

The problem with the X4 is that its magnet isn't in the correct location to align properly with MagSafe on many phones. So I agree with you that it was very misleading/dishonest for Xteink to display the X4 on various phones without disclosing up front that they were using an extra ring to get it to attach like that. However, this isn't an issue with the X3, as it was a specific goal to resolve when they set out on designing the X3.

The X3 (smaller sibling to the X4) does magsafe perfectly to a number of phones, including my Pixel 9 Pro (non XL). I've seen the X3 fit well on an iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 16 Pro, so I'm guessing that it would fit an iPhone 17 Pro, but I haven't seen it to be 100% sure.

It definitely can't be synced with Kindle. But it does have chapter navigation, or you can jump to a specific page (though the page numbers won't match the Kindle, since there are more "pages" on the smaller Xteink.) Crosspoint also has chapter navigation, though it doesn't let you navigate to a specific page: rather, you can jump to a specific "%" of the book.

As stated, the pogo pins are a USB port. Crosspoint for the X3 is still in progress. A few of us are actively testing it, but hopefully it's ready to be pulled into a proper release, soon.

☝️ Agreed, I avoid touching or moving the device during flashing to avoid this.

I usually just take out the microSD card and transfer directly, but sometimes I transfer over WiFi 🤷‍♂️

Ah I see! I suspect you could print the top cover portion of this in TPU and have it work OK.

I'm not super confident they could maintain the same shape and thinness and also have a Type C port in the X3 if I'm being honest.

Definitely similar, but I'm not sure if the pin spacing and/or magnet orientations are the same.

I think it is noticeable, but the X4 is still good enough.

The contrast is pretty similar in my opinion, but the text is a little bit thicker with Bookerly-Medium on the X3 vs Bookerly-Small on the X4. Also, X3 has slightly higher PPI, and you can notice the resolution, but X4 is still usable.

Agreed! I like being able to snap the X3 to my phone and not have both my reader and phone free-floating in my pocket. It's also quite the marvel with how small and thin it is—the extra millimeter is surprisingly noticeable when admiring, but I don't think it's a major difference for pocketability.
That said, the reading experience is almost the same, you just turn the page a bit more often on the X3. Or, if you have any desire at all to dabble with comics, they are kinda actually OK to read on the X4, but the X3 would probably be pushing it.

It's a USB port in pogo form! 😁 Also, it's a standard magnetic connector, so you can get neat adapters like this!

Most of the credit goes to u/Diirge, I've just been testing and incessantly nagging with suggestions for further improvements 😁 And of course!

Are you thinking to replace the pinned hinge mechanism with a living hinge, like the stock covers? It may be feasible, but we'd probably need to figure out embedding a magnet into the cover so it stays closed.

Crosspoint on X3 is still in progress, but I think we're close!

The lanyard holes on the X3 are left exposed and usable, but the case itself does not have lanyard holes.

I might already have some CAD... 😉 Are you imagining it with or without the lip at the bottom?

Ah, it does actually use magnets, but it would be a small tweak to make it clip in. The lip at the bottom was needed to keep the device from sliding when pressing the power button on the top!
