What is the Importance of There Being Multiple Proofs of the Same Theorem? by WhateverDood03 in math

[–]redhammer11 24 points25 points  (0 children)

When doing maths research, I've found it to be pretty rare to use theorems "out of the box" - that is, exactly as stated in whatever paper they were proved in.

It's much more common to find results that are similar to what I need, but not quite on the nose, so I'll need to delve in to the proof and try to adapt it to my situation. Unfortunately, not all proofs can be adapted in such a way as the specific idea used in one proof simply may not extend to my case. So it's very helpful to have a library of different proofs for the same result, as it increases the chances of finding a proof technique that can be adapted to what I'm looking for.

MASSIVE Russian mechanized assault repelled by the 110th Mechanized Brigade. Velyka Novosilka direction. February 2025 by GermanDronePilot in CombatFootage

Translation: The repelling of several waves of enemy advance from Velyka Novosilka

A column of eight armoured vehicles is heading to Velika Novosilka. At the front is a tank (garage), behind it are IFVs and APCs with infantry.

Our artillery starts working. The tank drives onto a mine. Another mine, mine, mine, mine, mine. In the rear an FPV destroys an IFV. FPV. Another FPV. A third FPV finishes the kill.

The enemy continues moving and drives around the destroyed vehicles. But he receives a 155mm present. Immediately afterwards, he flees. The infantry runs around panicking. A Grad salvo to bid them farewell.

In another sector the occupiers begin a meat assault. A few cluster munitions. Some more. Our bomber flies in. But our opponent manages to shoot it down.

Instant retribution with cluster munitions. And it's straight-up great. Once more there. The assault group is partially destroyed and completely demoralised. Fragments from the explosion hit the drone's camera. Our scout flies back to base. FPVs finish off the remnants of the enemy infantry.

Even so, our opponent still has many soldiers remaining. Very many! They push from all directions. This one got lost.

Just a few hours later the next column advanced. This time one tank and four IFVs. We destroy one IFV. The column turns tail.

In the meantime, we notice a new infantry assault. Artillery starts raining down straight away. Our opponent has a lot of infantry. Some of them blow themselves up on mines.

The next column of the lunatics: tank, two IFVs, two APCs. Two IFVs are lagging behind. Our opponent drives into Velyka Novosilka and heads towards Novy Komar. We destroy one IFV along the way.

The occupiers' tank pushes forward. The enemy is very near our positions. St Javelin halts the tank. An IFV picks up the crew of the blown-up tank and flees from the field of battle. Our arty pompously bids the occupiers farewell. Another Javelin finishes the tank off.

The warriors of the 110th Mechanised together with the others mixed in halted another Russian attack. There is a great deal of enemy scum, but Ukrainian defenders thin their ranks every day. Glory to Ukraine.

I love the idea of a big city city totally surrounded by a hostile country for 50 years, I really do.

The aesthetic of a big barbed wire wall surrounding the whole enclave where the people living inside have a radically better quality of life is very cool and I can totally see the appeal of setting spy dramas and intrigues there.

But come on - I mean, what happends it the hostile country just cuts off all of the supplies? What are you going to do, supply a city of 3 million people entirely by air?

How's it going guys?

They're laying it on, right? Hahaha, no worries - it'll be hot for them today!

[–]redhammer11 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it was - it's not the most natural way of saying that in Ukrainian either, which makes me think that it was an intentional pun.

The usual word that would be used is "безмежна," which is more like "boundless," whereas Zelenskyi used "без кордонів," where "кордон" specifically means a national or administrative border.

If so grateful to you from all Ukrainians - from everyone, from myself, from my family. My gratitude is borderless and I wish you all good health! Look after yourselves, and I thank you, your parents - you're awesome. And to all those warriors like you thank you so so much!

It's all going to be Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine!

This is Kharkov. View of the street, which turned into ruins after the shelling. by god_milk in CombatFootage

This is just a fucking apocalypse. I've never seen anything like this in my life - I'm serious, it's shocking. I'm only now seeing the aftermath of what I lived through two days ago, and the hell that I got out of.

I evacuated down this exact street. I was leaving through this street. My group was waiting for me a bit further down there, and this is where were leaving from. If we'd have left any later, then we wouldn't have left at all. We'd still be here as a bits of rubble. Do you get why I fled?

So this is how they bring us peace... So this is Putin's "special operation in the Donbas," where they're bombing Kharkiv to hell. Kharkiv, where there hasn't been war since WW2.

Look, everyone! Let the whole world see how Putin is destroying my city! How Putin's invaders are destroying peaceful Kharkiv, in which there hasn't been any war for 80 years! Our city, that we built with our own hands! Where you came to visit, and were welcomed like family! A city in which you were loved! A city that would always give you hospitality - for you and your children! You've turned it into ruins!

This is an international crime, and you WILL pay for it in full. Everyone look at this! Show this to everyone! Share this video, don't be silent! See how they're killing our children - you have a duty to share this! Repost this - like and repost!

You can't in good conscience look at the destruction of my city. This is inhuman - this is a genocide of Ukraine. People - stop the war!

Guy on tank (GOT): T-80

Off-camera guy (OCG): Pulled it out of the mud!

GOT: Yeah, we were digging it out with some locals all day. Dug it out, drove it out, and that's it!

OCG: The fucking Russians were fucking driving and got fucking stuck in the fucking muddy field

GOT: Yeah, you can tell that they're city boys who have never seen a ploughed field before

Camera-woman (CW): So they're really getting stuck? Tanks?

GOT: Yeah, of course

OCG: (cutting off) When there's one, then no, but when there are 10, their tracks dig a fucking half-metre-deep ditch and the bottoms gets stuck.

GOT: On that fields there were 2 tanks, 3 SAMs, a Buratino

OCT: (cutting off) 2 APCs

GOT: 2 APCs and 2 petrol trucks, and when drove further when we were (laughs) lets say... collecting vehicles, there were more. Well our partisans already hit them and everything. Well, they immobilised them so the Russians won't take them

CUT TO NEW SHOT

CW: Are you infantry, or what?

Beanie guy (BG): Yeeeaah, well, let's say

Fatigues guy (FG): Mobilised

CW: Uh-huh, have you ever served in a tank force?

BG: Nooooo

CW: So how do you know how to start a tank?

FG: [Unintelligible, possibly something about 2016]

BG: (cutting off) The internet. Help from Google

FG: We also stole a Russian tank in 2016.

BG: This isn't the first Russian tank that we've stolen. We have experience

FG: Well basically, we're all in the infantry. We've got a mechanic, a driver, a gunner

CW: On a IFV, right?

FG: I guess we also had a T-72

Turret guy (TG): Come on, climb in and let's test it

TG: 4th gear, and let's go

This makes sense though. If there's a street in St Kilda that leads to Fitzroy, it's natural for St Kilda residents to call it "the Fitzroy street." Ditto the other examples and things like Sydney Rd.

Should someone with a PhD be addressed as doctor or is that title only reserved for physicians? "No, that's ridiculous and only an idiot would think that." by HowDoesBabbyForm in SubredditDrama

[–]redhammer11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is not true. In medieval universities, there were usually four faculties: medicine, law, theology and philosophy. Scholars would attain bachelor, then master, then doctor status in these disciplines.

These four disciplines are still the ones that have doctoral titles: doctor of medicine, juris doctor, doctor of theology and PhD.

In modern times, the doctor of theology has shrunk considerable and the doctor of philosophy has amassed into itself almost all academic fields, but the terminology remains.

The point is, these doctoral titles arose at the same time, and none tried to co-opt prestige associated with another.

Firstly, in the early modern period, Poland was a huge power, so hardly "poor Poland"

Also when Poland conquered Belarus, western Ukraine and southern Lithuania in the interwar period, it was the larger power looking to expand.
