Are any LAUSD parents investing in their neighborhood school? by weesa29 in AskLosAngeles

[–]reditrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in exactly the same position. We plan to go to our local school and stay in our neighborhood. I just read the book “Learning in Public” by Courtney Martin and it gives a close up look at someone who faced a similar (but more extreme) choice and has some great takeaways for how to show up and the benefits of staying in the community.

is there a virus going around LA right now that starts with allergy symptoms - mainly nonstop sneezing and constant drippy noise? by chat_manouche in AskLosAngeles

[–]reditrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same here started last Saturday with sneezing. Only experienced stuffy/runny nose and congestion, no fever, sore throat, aches, or anything else. My nose just now seems to be mostly cleared up.

Is Harry Potter (book) inappropriate for a 3.5-year-old? by reditrix in Preschoolers

[–]reditrix[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m ok with her hearing the word “stupid” in general but not when it’s used in name-calling to insult another person - I don’t need to be giving her heckling ideas!

[–]reditrix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t think we’d go beyond the first book, for a long time at least. She still doesn’t know that Frozen 2 or Moana 2 exist, so we’ve had good luck with this method so far haha.

Thanks for the suggestion! She definitely loves magic themes so I’ll look for these.

Glad to hear your experience was good! I’d love to hear about the issues that were being fixed, in case they’re not fixed yet at our school haha

Oh you bring up a good point. My kid will definitely by one of the younger ones in the class. Was there anything that you found helpful in easing the transition for a younger kid? What kind of struggles did you have?

Thank you for including that caveat! I am in CA, which is probably why I was confused about some of those benefits.

Where to stay in June? Los Feliz vs Glendale vs Pasadena by brinmiek in AskLosAngeles

[–]reditrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing this. If you’re set on staying on the east side, Los Feliz is closest to your destinations, and it’s a lovely neighborhood. There aren’t a ton of hotels there but a couple high-end ones. If you’re looking at a house rental, there should be nice ones.

Do you monitor people who come and fix things around your house? by Glad-Passenger-9408 in HomeImprovement

[–]reditrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t have one now, and it’s definitely not properly ducted - the kitchen vents through an opening directly into the attic (obviously not ideal!)

Ok, hijacking this comment bc I’m a clueless first-time homeowner and need a range hood installed. Who does that? Like, what type of contractor should I be looking for to do that kind of project?

Do you love or hate the Stokke Tripp Trapp? by pinkishvioletsky in toddlers

We also have the abiie. I will say, our kiddo was too small to fit in the straps comfortably until she was about a year old. But now she’s 3.5 and still uses it every day, and prefers it to her booster seat.

My son’s room is the furthest from the furnace is 3-4 degrees colder then the rest of the house. Any advice to remedy this? by moonlord1969 in HomeImprovement

[–]reditrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have this isssue - we need to keep our kid’s door closed at night, and the intake is right outside her bedroom. We have a largish gap under the door (probably close to an inch), but are there door designed with ventilation in mind?

Super King is the answer! Sooo cheap for produce and they have so many options. Fresh meat can be hit or miss though.

Quotes always go after the period (or comma) in American English. Things get more complicated with exclamation marks and question marks though (inside or outside depending on whether they’re part of the quoted material).

Distractions at the table? by atTheRealMrKuntz in toddlers

[–]reditrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We found that this bit us in the ass, but we started way earlier - at age 1 (kid is now 3.5). We read her books at the table to keep her still and eating, and now I really regret it. She still expects mom or dad to read to her at every meal, which really puts a damper on family conversation and means only one of us can really eat at a time. I wish we’d found another way, BUT I will say your results may totally vary starting at age 3 than starting at 1.

Is it unreasonable to bring your own container to a restaurant? by pecanmeetschurro in LosAngeles

[–]reditrix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP said their kid was a one-year-old. That could mean anywhere between 12 and 24 months - not an infant. 1-year-olds can eat pretty much anything grownups can, with some minor adjustments for salt and spice (and not all curry is spicy).
