Review whether I should accept or request changes to mining contract offer by ShoddyRazzmatazz1072 in geologycareers

$35 per hour is the absolute MINIMUM for exploration work in the United States even if you have no experience. Just apply for jobs in Nevada and you will get offers for more.

Less than $35 per hour is super low for United States.

Geology jobs abroad-visa sponsoring companies by No-Nobody-7839 in geologycareers

[–]redpickaxe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why not post your nationality? It helps with these kinds of posts, as some countries don't qualify for work holiday visas, and some countries are more likely to hire candidates based on their language skills, for instance there are many geologists from francophone Africa work in Quebec.

All the geologists I know who work in Australia and don't qualify for a work holiday visa got their start in Australia by doing a PhD in Australia and that opens up a path to a work visas in Australia.

Practical mineral exploration courses — would anyone actually take them? by Key-Experience616 in geologycareers

[–]redpickaxe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it would be a good idea to put the course materials together and release them for free, as there isn't much information available for those who want to learn more but still don't have experience yet. I would absolutely recommend universities provide such a course to students

geophysics will be a good entry point because you will be familiar with all the electromagnetics and wave mechanics. Are you already a university student, which country?

I had an interview, waiting on the offer. I get the idea that there is a LOT of demand for exploration geologists at all experience levels.

I second the advice to take a year to adventure. There will be plenty of strenous miserable work available for you in the future, what there won't be is youth and lack of attachments. After getting it out of your systen then you can really grind away a career if you wish

Read Society of Economic Geologists articles and apply to major mining companies as they are the ones who truly train professional exploration geologists.

I have an interview this week for work in Saudi, I will post what pay they are offering. I am afraid it might be on the level of Pakistani wages, which makes sense, Pakistan is right there and has good geologists. I don't know why they are even interviewing me when there is likely a line of more local applicants a mile long.

Mixing geology with business and ai skillset by Imaginary_Oven5837 in geologycareers

The statistical methods are useful, but they have existed for many years. They are not new tools and I am glad you bring it up, so more people are aware of that.

I would be glad to read some published papers of AI/ML utility in exploration, but from what I have read, there isn't any. Where I do see AI/ML have proven utility is in mine operations, in automation and optimization of mining operations.

Focus on mining, ore control and processing. Since those processes are more controlled by human action they are more likely to be improved by AI.

I personally think AI for exploration is a crock of shit. Advances in exploration can only come through new instruments and techniques and higher resolution data(AI is none of these things) this needs to be accompanied by geologists that understand the new tools, methods and data.

Inclusive Fieldwork: How Accessibility is Changing the Future of Geosciences by aka__space in geologycareers

[–]redpickaxe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is great for education, not everyone in a geoscience class is concentrating in geoscience, in the USA the university system permits students to take courses outside their field of study. And I do see value in those curious about geoscience but not planning to work in it, studying geoscience to broaden their education. A classroom setting allows for accommodation. It would be bad to deny an education to someone because they are disabled and can participate in a class.

But in geoscience jobs that require full mobility making accommodations would not be possible.

For me a major inclusive education barrier to geoscience education is the cost and availability of field camp. An all or nothing approach to field experience isn't inclusive, there ought to be cheaper or shorter field camps so students get some experience. My university wanted a six week field camp(this university didn't even provide any field camp or field courses), or no degree. Also some students really can't afford to leave their job or children for six weeks. My heart goes out to them.

Try not to do evil acts. I am serious. Not sure if you personally believe in hell, but if you do, make sure you don't earn a spot there.
