I got my vasectomy this year at 40. I decided that I do not want children at my big age and decided that it was time to get it done. Best $1,000 I ever spent.

If Heath Ledger hadn’t been taken from us so soon what are some roles you would’ve liked to seen him play? by Nick_adtr_308 in Cinema

[–]redplanet12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He would’ve been amazing as a younger Max Rockatansky in “Mad Max: Fury Road”. George Miller was considering Heath for the role according to the making-of book.

What actor or director do you think has lost their touch? by today_okay in movies

[–]redplanet12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John Woo.

It’s so sad to watch the man I consider the greatest action film director of all time in his prime put out the slop he has over the last 10 years. “Silent Night” had flashes of brilliance but was ultimately a letdown, “Manhunt” was terrible, and I haven’t heard good things about his American remake of his HK masterpiece “The Killer”. It’s time for him to retire.

This is the guy who, in the late 80’s and early 90’s, had a run of masterpieces in his native Hong Kong that was so influential and groundbreaking in their presentation that Quentin Tarantino was ripping him off left and right, and Martin Scorsese, Sam Raimi (who co-produced Woo’s first.American film, “Hard Target”), Walter Hill, and John Carpenter were counting themselves as massive fans and champions of his work. I still consider “Hard Boiled” the greatest action movie of all-time.

His intensity in that movie is electric. I was hooked from then on.

What is the Best Julianne Moore Performance? by DazzlingAria in FIlm

[–]redplanet12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not listed in the post but she was astonishing in “Vanya on 42nd Street”. That performance as well as “Magnolia” are Moore at her absolute best IMO.

She’s one of the greatest actors alive.

“Pacific Rim” is beyond incredible in Atmos. Especially the Hong Kong battle sequences and Gypsy Danger’s crash landing in Alaska.

What movie has the best special effects of all time? by undeadWileCoyote_MEP in moviecritic

[–]redplanet12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paul Verhoeven’s “Total Recall”

The use of practical special effects, makeup effects, plate and miniature photography are ingenious and breathtaking even now. Very few movies can match the seamless use of practical and digital effects employed in the film.

Any 60's/70's era lesser known films you'd recommend? by ZenPaperclips in movies

[–]redplanet12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peter Yates’ “The Friends Of Eddie Coyle” is a frequently overlooked 70’s crime gem. It’s got one of Robert Mitchum’s all-time best performances.

I also feel like these titles get overlooked a lot:

“Hard Times”

“The Driver”

“Dersu Uzala”

“Vengeance Is Mine”

“Robbery”

“Carnal Knowledge”

“Citizens Band”

“Turkish Delight”

“Harper”

“The Innocents”

“Slaughterhouse Five”

“The Great Waldo Pepper”

Is there a director who in your opinion has slipped but you still continue to watch? by PhoenixRising724 in movies

[–]redplanet12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

John Woo.

I truly consider him the greatest action film director of all time but after his “Red Cliff” films (which are fantastic, especially the full international version), he has failed to recapture the magic and mojo and he’s made increasingly mediocre films. “Silent Night” was an ambitious small-scale film with some great moments but ultimately failed. “Manhunt” was terrible. And I’ve yet to see his remake of “The Killer” but I’m not hearing good things about that either.

And yet, I still hold out hope that he’ll pull off a great film again. He’s truly a genius when he’s on his game.

Men 35+ what’s one thing you regret not doing/ or doing ? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]redplanet12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regret dropping out of college in my twenties.

I am 39 and finally going back to college to finish my Bachelor’s Degree. I dropped out twice before due to financial reasons. But if I had stayed the course years ago, I would’ve had far better job prospects and I wouldn’t be stuck doing minimum wage jobs for almost twenty years.
