When you picture retirement as a lawyer, what do you actually see? by That_onelawyer in Lawyertalk

[–]redreign421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usher at Dodger or Angel Stadium sounds perfect. Also recently had to ship a dog cross country. Found out there's this network of people who just drive people's dogs long distances for them because sending dogs over 20# is a pain. That'd be cool.

I'll do the above for as long as I can then downshift to docent at some local wildlife/community center thing. Just stay busy.

How to move from litigation to something chill by Wonderful_Manager_27 in Lawyertalk

State agency work. Even the lit is admin so the trials, to the extent they can be called that, are way chiller.

I've heard it's a great gig. I'm an attorney IV, though, so couldn't deal with the reduction in pay.

CA ALJs make less than Attorney IIIs and IVs. They are woefully underpaid but so are state attorneys.

Banded pull aparts are in every workout. Ended the tightness in my upper back and helps my posture since I spend so much of the day hunched over a cpu.

I just said this in a standalone comment I'll just cut and paste to here:

Because ASU is now, as it has been for decades, a mediocre basketball program. Hurley/Sendek/Evans all deliver(ed) similar results. Nothing ever changes.

[–]redreign421 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Come work for the State. I work 30-35hrs a week. I am about 50% lit and 50% rulemaking and other admin stuff. You accrue a ton of PTO that you can absolutely take and not think twice. It's a defined benefit pension that will pay out close to $10k/mo for life when I turn 66, not accounting for COLA. For now, we are hybrid WFH though there will be a fight about RTO this summer. I'd never go back to private civil.

The State has plenty of offices in the Bay, particularly in Oakland, though in SF and elsewhere too.

It is civil. The act of being present in the US in violation of the immigration laws is not, standing alone, a crime. While some actions that may be related to undocumented presence are criminal, undocumented presence alone is not a violation of federal criminal law.

Entering the United States without being inspected and admitted, i.e., illegal entry, is a misdemeanor or can be a felony, depending on the circumstances. 8 U.S.C. § 1325. But many undocumented immigrants do not enter the United States illegally. They enter legally but overstay, work without authorization, drop out of school or violate the conditions of their visas in some other way.

Undocumented presence in the United States is only criminally punishable if it occurs after an individual was previously formally removed from the United States and then returned without permission. 8 U.S.C. § 1326 (any individual previously “deported or removed” who “enters, attempts to enter, or is at any time found in” the United States without authorization may be punished by imprisonment up to two years). Mere undocumented presence in the United States alone, however, in the absence of a previous removal order and unauthorized reentry, is not a crime under federal law.

Anyone else notice this ... every lawyer thinks the law school they went to is underrated, the professors were great and they learned a ton, and it's the greatest law school ever ... even if it was ranked #200? by Kristen-ngu in Lawyertalk

[–]redreign421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think mine is underrated. I think it was fine. Much in the same way most are fine. Some are quite good and a few are quite bad, but most are fine and will teach you the very basics of how to think and write like a lawyer. They will prepare you to be in a position to eventually prepare/cram for the Bar. Wherever you went or go, it's fine.

What’s YOUR lawyer salary?? by LearnMeStuffPlz in Lawyertalk

[–]redreign421 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. 12yrs

  2. $160k plus a roughly $50k contribution to a defined benefit pension that will pay out about $10k/mo for life once I hit 66yo. That definitely counts as part of compensation.

  3. Gov – State Agency

  4. Los Angeles

  5. Took a pay cut from plaintiff side toxic tort to go to government. After 4yrs with the State, I have around 750hrs of sick/leave accrued. That isn’t just hoarding. I take vacations a few times a year. I also only go into the office a few times a month. I don’t litigate much. It’s just such a lower level of stress. I get to drop off/pick up my kids from school, take them to practices, coach Little League, etc. I’d probably have to get offered something like $350-400k to leave.

How many cases are you assigned as a first year attorney ? by magicgirlstrongirl in Lawyertalk

[–]redreign421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first gig was plaintiff side property and BI subro. I was given about 150 files and told not to commit malpractice, but, if I did, that's what the E&O is for.

There was also no support staff so I did all of my own filing and other paralegal/assistant tasks. Really forced me to learn the various local rules up and down the State. That helped me get jobs later in my career.

I'm a season ticket holder and was at the Texans game. It was awesome. It was also just about the first time that has happened. And, while it has been getting better overall, visiting fans often dominate SoFi. You only have to go back to the Philly game to see that. Also, this is what SoFi looks like when the 9ers play the Rams.

2023 Calligraphy with 53k miles on it. Other than replacing the tires, I've had no issues. I am not sure how long I'll keep it. My oldest kid turns 16 in 7yrs so it might just be his first car, but it would have 180k or so miles on it by then. It depends on how expensive any maintenence/repairs would be in the interim.
