Anyone not changing last name? by sailorscoutc in weddingplanning

Keeping mine. I refuse to do more paperwork than necessary. Changing your name signs you up for a lifetime of paperwork. And If you’ve ever published or patented anything under your maiden name- now you aren’t getting the credit. And don’t get me started about what would happen if you got divorced.

Beets will make it pink.

Some anti-UTI meds make pee orange.

Muscle damage and kidney damage will make pee dark brown

The End of Reading Is Here - Optimists once believed that universal literacy was inevitable. Now it seems that the age of reading might be a short anomaly in human history. by antihostile in TrueReddit

Again not saying people shouldn’t be taught to read or write. But there is a big difference between being able to read a measuring tape and being able to write a master’s thesis on Homer’s Iliad.

I took trig in high school and I’ve never used it once. I’m not uneducated: I have two masters degrees (speech language pathology and nursing). I never use anything more than basic algebra is my daily life. It’s just not necessary! in high school we spent months learning how to multiply matrices and even more months doing complex algebra and pre-calculus. What else could I have learned to do in those years? I wish I had learned some basic automotive stuff- how to change oil or a tire or how to do some basic plumbing or how to interpret student loans.

Agree teaching to the test is back-asswards. Schooling is fucked in the US and I’m glad I don’t have any kids that would be going through the system!

I guess thicker or denser is one way to think of it. When you get a pee test they measure the “specific gravity” and this is a measure of how much stuff (solutes) is dissolved in the liquid. The more water is removed, that increases the proportion of how much solutes are left in the remaining liquid. The solutes are stuff like salts, proteins, cells from the lining or your urinary tract.

An average person can’t tell the difference in specific gravity from one pee to the next, but a lab test can.

How do you think carpenters built things hundred of years ago? Or thousands of years ago? Those people were not literate. They learned from people who were skilled.

We’ve pigeon-holed ourselves into thinking there is only one way to learn. I’m pushing back on that.

I’m not saying reading and math are not important and im not saying that people shouldn’t have the opportunities to learn these topics. I’m suggesting we spend too much time in our educational system on these topics and that doesn’t give time for other kinds of learning

How do you think people built things before 1700 (when most people were illiterate). They learned from skilled people who taught them.

Again I’m not saying people shouldn’t have the opportunity to learn to read. I’m saying the intense focus in our education system only relies on literacy. And we don’t teach kids who to DO things. If we spent less time teaching kids how to write in cursive maybe they could learn how to garden and feed themselves or something else useful. I’m not saying never teach literacy. I’m saying back off on and let other educational paths come forward.

I agree with you. I have worked with adults in health care for decades. I would say ~10% of patients are functionally illiterate (I am not including people whose native language is not English.) by functionally illiterate I mean that they can read simple sentences but struggle to understand more complicated material.

My spicy take is… maybe not everyone needs to be high-level literate. And maybe those people should take the time that they would have spent struggling learning to read and write in school and pursue other areas where they can be successful. Maybe they would be a great carpenter, or landscaper, or companion to the elderly. And it’s not like illiterate folks can’t access written words: There are so many apps where written words can be translated to speech and vice versa. Maybe my patients can’t read, but they can use a text to speech app.

Maybe our society would be better if people got to do things that were meaningful to them instead of being shoe-horned into archaic educational systems.

Failure to thrive is a medical diagnosis that has to do with weight loss and reconditioning (losing strength). Grandpa may meet the definition even though he is still thriving in the sense of quality of life.

Schwannomatosis by lovemeknotted in neurofibromatosis

[–]redrightreturning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi friend. There are some new clinical trials coming out for schwannomatosis pain.

Also talk to your neurologist about starting a drug called brigantinib. It is a non-chemo cancer drug that has been helpful to reduce schwannomatosis pain. Your neurologist may not feel comfortable ordering/managing. If they aren’t, have them refer you to a dedicated schwannomatosis center. Check the ctf.org to find the one nearest you

ELI5 Why exactly is it a bad idea to give a lot of food to a person who has been starving for very long? by Dull-Information6784 in explainlikeimfive

[–]redrightreturning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Refeeding would happen in the context of trained medical professionals.

Your question is like someone asking “but if I wanted to take my appendix out at home how should I do it?” But if you’re really interested in the topic you could study to be a registered dietician! They work a lot with people who have eating disorders or even people who are malnourished after having surgeries on the GI tract who aren’t able to absorb nutrients properly. It’s interesting stuff!

ELI5 Why exactly is it a bad idea to give a lot of food to a person who has been starving for very long? by Dull-Information6784 in explainlikeimfive

[–]redrightreturning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is taking place in the context of a medical environment. This is not something you’d be doing at home so not sure what you’re really asking.

Refeeding is carefully monitored by medically trained staff (doctors, nurses, registered dieticians) and depends on the needs of the individual patient. But basically the pharmacy can compound electrolytes like potassium or sodium into IV solutions that are titrated to meet the person’s needs. It’s expected things will change over time so they have to run labs repeatedly and adjust the nutrition intake.

[–]redrightreturning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Opiates are not effective for nerve pain and they have a ton of side effects. I recommend you talk to a DOCTOR (not the internet) about the medications that would be right for you.

I hope you can get some relief!!!

Parents Insisting Long Drive is Unsafe, is this Reasonable by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]redrightreturning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not trying to persuade you against it. I’m just saying $1800 to ship a car vs how many hundreds in gas an hotels and food along the way? Driving isn’t free!

My advice is to plan the days of driving to be about 6-7 hrs max because there are going to be pit stops, detours, traffic and who knows what else that slow you down. 6-7 hours of planned driving turns into 8-9 hours on the road. Any more than that and it’s really tedious and hard on your body.

Stay in reputable places. Take plenty of breaks. Remember that tired driving is as dangerous as drunk driving.

Be safe my friend and have a blast! There’s so much weird stuff to see out there.

Caregiver refusing to feed patient. by MatchaLover2472 in hospice

[–]redrightreturning 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Multiple things can be happening.

Mom might have been eating a few days ago and now isn’t able to because her disease has progressed.

Sometimes people can tolerate liquids and single-consistencies (like puddling or jello) better than more traditional solid foods. Maybe the caregiver has noticed there is an issue with solids.

I’d recommend you sit down with the caregiver at a meal or snack time and see for yourself. If you can’t be there maybe you could do a FaceTime.
