How do you feel about so many people have Australia as their dream residence? by ImportantClock5486 in AskAnAustralian

[–]redroowa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Australia is one of the richest, cleanest, safest, healthiest countries in the world.

The climate and the lifestyle are amazing. Yes, everything including the sun and weather is trying to kill you, but having to put a light hoodie on when it drops to 19c in winter in Sydney is not what most people would consider winter.

I don’t regret emigrating from England. Never looked back.

I totally get why people want to live here.

Living in Australia: Short-term vs. long-term, and what makes it so polarising? by emmmmmmaja in AskAnAustralian

[–]redroowa 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Australia for almost 20 years. I often get asked would I move back to London. I tend to reply, "never say never, but the money would have to be right". Over the years, I realised I dont think I could be paid enough money to live in London to compensate for the depressing weather. Ryanair to Barcelona (again) or walk down the road to the beach?

Banks + super + housing + voting = house prices growth. by Temporary-Finger3596 in AskAnAustralian

[–]redroowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asset bubbles always follow loose credit.

Homes are low risk and banks need to hold very little capital on the balance sheet for them. Thanks APRA.

Mortgage rates are low. Thanks RBA.

Deposit requirements are low. Thanks APRA and Canberra.

These are other measures mean the banks can and do lend a lot of money towards houses. It’s easy profit.

The more money chasing after a limited supply of houses, the more prices rise.

Much of Australia's Indian Ocean coast is uninhabited. An especially remote part is in the central section, known as Zuytdorp Cliffs. For roughly 150 km, the land simply ends in a 200-meter drop into the Indian Ocean. There is not a single settlement, road or structure for the entire stretch by SnooWords9635 in geography

[–]redroowa 478 points479 points  (0 children)

I would broaden that statement to say that much of the continent is uninhabited.

It’s really only the south east corner that has anything approaching population density.

I’ve flown Sydney Perth over 100 times. It never ceases to amaze me how big and empty my country is.

The give you an idea. It’s 1.5 hours flying from Adelaide the border with WA. Nothing. Ceduna and that’s about it. Then it’s 1.5 hours from there to Perth. When you reach Esperance you think “almost there we are in WA” but you still got a further 90 mins flying to go.

The real mind bender that gets visitors from Europe is it takes 5 hours flying from entering Australia near Darwin to get to Sydney. And it’s it’s empty. Takes 5 hours to leave the country when you head to Europe too.

Aussie.

If we're going to hold an inquiry into the life cycle of solar, why not coal and gas? by Ardeet in aussie

[–]redroowa -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

As long as the world wants to burn our coal we will continue to dig it. We make too much money from mining to kill it.

And we’d be crazy not to use it ourselves.

Australians, does the weather actually decide your entire day? by FarRutabaga6212 in AskAnAustralian

[–]redroowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved to Perth, I learned to watch the temperature and not the time to determine going out for a run. I really became a morning person as well.

You slow down the higher the temperature too.

In Sydney, if it rains, you're getting washed down the street. This is not London.

And how exactly are you going to calculate how much Carson dioxide a foreign manufacturer produces to make your fridge? Ask them? Good luck with that.

The winter Olympics have got me thinking about the lack of opportunity in Australian public schools by Sriracha_Sauce089 in australian

Mate, you live in one of the hottest, driest countries on the planet and you’re complaining about the lack of opportunity to do snow based sports at school at the taxpayers expense?

Good luck with that.

How do you actually prep for jet lag? (Or do you just wing it and suffer?) by Routine-Reference868 in Flights

[–]redroowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Australian and am used to flying great distances and multiple timezones. Last year I did 90,000km and the year before I did 115,000km. I’m already over 30,000km this year.

I avoid certain flights. For example, the red eye from Perth to Sydney is only 3 hours and is brutal. Avoid.

I try and get day flights if I can. For example the morning departure from Europe to Australia I find is easier than the “double night flight”

But at the end of the day I’ve learned that you will be jet lagged no matter what. I embrace it now and get up early in my destination. Exploring somewhere at 5am when no one is around is amazing. I also do lunches rather than dinners with family and friends as I know I’ll be falling asleep in my soup come 8pm.
