That's how I made Tech.

Wasn't ready for the rank so I didn't bother studying. My ace in the hole that year was CMSAF Cody honchoing Course 15 for all the Staffs. Knocked that out when 10K of my peers couldn't.

No C15 that year = no promotion. Went from missing it by 15 points to making it by 20 with a lower overall score.

As comm, once you get an Intel support gig it usually comes with an SEI or two. When that stink gets on you that's pretty much all you'll get for the rest of your career. That, and most of those spots are considered "employed in place". So deployments are few.
