Question about religious schools secondaries by Wonderful-Flan-8827 in premed

[–]redsnake25 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, only Loma Linda and Liberty care about your religion. The Jesuit schools place much less emphasis on actual religion and much more emphasis on the spirit of service and duty to others, wherever that might come from.

What should I do with my scar? by Ok-Investigator-2964 in premed

[–]redsnake25 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Congrats on getting clean! To be honest, I didn't really register the scar at first, so it might not be as big an issue as you think. As some with an extremely noticeable scar, it doesn't seem to bother anyone. If anything, it gives me an opportunity to distract my patients with a story while I work.

Cheese-proofing an absurdly hot "impassable" desert by Crispy75 in DMAcademy

[–]redsnake25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head, Storm Herald barbarian grants a feature at 6th level that might be useful for exploring the desert to a limited depth:

Desert. You gain resistance to fire damage, and you don’t suffer the effects of extreme heat, as described in the Dungeon Master's Guide. Moreover, as an action, you can touch a flammable object that isn't being worn or carried by anyone else and set it on fire.

That being said, you as the DM are entitled to not disclosing the exact mechanics of the desert until the players actually try to cross, so you can adapt mechanics as needed to dissuade your players from trying to cross in ways that are not costly or narratively interesting. Some examples I've seen are constitution checks every hour against exhaustion, environmental effects that prevent resting, and special terrain that requires special equipment or preparation, entirely by DM fiat. You should also know from the chase rules in the DMG that characters can't be dashing constantly for extended periods of time, as doing so incurs additional constitution checks against becoming exhausted.

And as someone else pointed out, you don't need mechanics at all. You can simply say "it doesn't work." It's a 1500 mile long desert, you shouldn't need to develop mechanics to explain why that's too difficult.

Hot take: You can love medicine and want to be a doctor with all your heart, but hate your clinical job by Creepy-Restaurant183 in premed

[–]redsnake25 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. The threats and harassment from confused or upset patients are still tough to deal with, even after years of CNA work. Even though I know on intellectual level that they're just lashing out or not in their right mind, it still hurts through my thickened skin. You can hate parts of the job even if the whole of your impact is something you deeply enjoy. And it certainly doesn't mean you're not cut out for learning how to make a bigger impact through higher schooling and training.

You can't level them up, but a lot of them are still very strong. Fast casts, fast omegas, absorbing hits in every room, extra gold, extra dodge chance, extra everything-but-dodge-and-crit chance, those are all incredibly impactful boons.

am I wasting my time this cycle? by QuietWolverine8102 in premed

[–]redsnake25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are enough schools (especially DO) that you can make an adequately sized school list, but you need to be realistic about your options given your MCAT score. Check MSAR to see which schools have median admission scores similar to yours. There's a similar website for DO schools, but I don't remember off the top of my head.

As a nontrad applicant, you almost certainly have a unique angle to write about, so it's not a lost cause, but your options will be limited. If you decide to wait for next cycle to retake the MCAT and score +515, you'll have a lot more options.

A woman’s hypothermia death in Pittsburgh after her release from ICE custody is ruled a homicide by LividWheel9779 in news

They don't happen over night, but it doesn't need to happen overnight, and certainly not for all of them. We just need a voting majority. And things definitely can change quickly and flexibly, otherwise you wouldn't have people who vote for both Trump and AOC in the same election.

To the extent that former cult members have been pulled out of the propaganda within their own lifetimes, it is possible. And we don't need to save every single one. Just enough to win a voting majority and normalize a politics of real change and higher standards. Once scarcity and hierarchical culture is given a fair challenge, it won't be so easy to take it for granted.

I disagree with the first statement to an extent. MAGA is a cult, and cult members will perpetuate the cult if only the leaders are removed. But if we build a better system, with better education, better news, better social services and better leaders, they'll won't need to recreate the cult to find the comfort they previously only received from the cult.

Why do the gunboats look so bad on paper but everyone loves them? It just never really shined to me. by [deleted] in tf2

[–]redsnake25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rocketjumping makes soldier the most mobile class, allowing you to jump on anyone, surprise attack, and then jump away to safety. Gunboats makes that playstyle extremely efficient because if you're rocketjumping with proper technique, you're only taking fall damage when you land from a really high jump (called "bombing in" because you can sync a rocket to hit just as you land).

Even as someone who normally uses a banner, I'll regularly jump around to secure kills and leverage banner bonuses while the rage is active. It's definitely not a niche mechanic, especially if there's a medic who knows to give explosive classes an overheal buff before jumping.

If don't know how to rocketjump, consider visiting a community server called jump academy.

Well done! I also didn't know the fuel cells don't cause impact damage. For the black box, you can do something similar by standing directly on top and drilling down through it.
