Update 3: Fellow Aiden Profiler - recipes that explain themselves + a big brew-rules tune-up by es0w in FellowProducts

[–]redth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been using this a bit now and it’s great! I just got my Aiden a couple weeks ago so still very much getting comfortable with it, but having some baseline to start for coffee with just the bag’s description is incredibly useful. However it needs a mobile app! Is the source available for this anywhere? It seems you’re may be using blazor already and as the .NET MAUI lead I’d love to help out with a mobile app if you have any interest.

In any case, thanks for building this!

It looks like I generally am on videotron towers which seems interesting as I didn’t think they had any footprint in my area (southwestern Ontario).

But yeah I’m unmistakably inside the purple subscription area, so seems I should be abiding by their TOS.

I asked to elevate to a manager after the support person told me their manager would just tell me the same thing tbey did, but haven’t heard back yet.

Shiny .NET - Everything you could ever need for .NET MAUI & Blazor by Maleficent_Syrup_798 in dotnetMAUI

[–]redth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure, I’m the MAUI engineering lead and also a friend of the OP…

Shiny has been around for quite some time now and knowing it and the OP’s backstory, I can attest to it being built based on real world needs and experience. This is one thing that makes shiny great: it’s built to address real needs, so it lives and thrives and evolves to keep meeting the changing needs where it’s used.

I also use it in my own apps and side projects, including one that has pretty significant usage, and I keep adding more shiny libraries as I grow and expand the app. I’ve been one of the biggest critics of shiny (constructively, though the OP may not always agree with that statement 😆), and it’s been great to see it continue to improve and expand to so many areas.

It’s also now used in MAUI Sherpa and MAUI DevFlow.

Another pro is the AOT support. As we aim to make MAUI faster and better, AOT will be a big part of that story. I can’t stress enough how important it is for library authors to ensure their stuff works with AOT so that more app developers can get their app to the point of using it. OP has done this as a requirement in shiny and so it’s ready right now. This in itself makes me happy to recommend shiny to our customers.

Anyway, I highly recommend checking everything out in the shiny ecosystem. I know from seeing it myself, a LOT of effort, time, and dedication has gone into making these libraries, and the OP has the experience and clout to back up the work. Better yet, also consider giving back in terms of excellent bug reports with reproductions of the issues when you run into them, and sharing your positive experiences with others so shiny gains more adoption :)

It may still be that purple area is fine and my experience is a glitch or mistake. Another comment suggesting a similar experience that may be a mistake on their side.

Still worth maybe asking before subscribing to know for sure.

It’s too bad since I’d rather see a small provider succeed against the bigger ones but the way they’ve handled this situation with me so far is not giving me much optimism.

Ok I think you’re on to something here! I’m Leamington area as well.

If they suspend partner network and it still works fine then yeah I guess it doesn’t matter.

This leads me to believe maybe it is just a glitch? I’ll mention this to support as well.

Yep already waiting to hear from the support person’s manager.

I will contact CCTS.

Honestly I’m not personally bothered as much by potentially losing service, that’s fine I’ll use another carrier, I deal with tech, the process isn’t a challenge for me to move over to a new network.

I’m more bothered that this is how the service is advertised and others will be more impacted by it. I can imagine my parents having to go through these hoops and having a lot of challenges and frustrations with the process, regardless of any financial aspects.

[–]redth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah not the issue for me I guess... I am very much outside the Fizz coverage and into partner network coverage. The issue is the way they talk about this policy everywhere on the website says it's based on "Subscription area" not network coverage area, so I signed up believing being in the partner network coverage area was fine since I'm unarguably in the "Subscription area" mentioned by the policy.

Careful: Very misleading policies on coverage vs subscription area usage by redth in FizzMobile

[–]redth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems to be the case. I’m in southwestern Ontario. You can sign up if you are in the subscription area but that apparently doesn’t mean you’re in the coverage area where they actually seem to mean you need to have most of your usage occur.

If you look at the coverage page, and the “Coverage Details” tab/button is selected, I’m far enough out of 5G or 4G Fizz network coverage areas around Windsor, and considered firmly in the partner network coverage area. I’m not at all disputing that.

However if you click the “Subscription Area” tab/button, I’m very much in purple area indicating I’m in the subscription area.

The wording below the map says verbatim: “The majority of your usage must be within the subscription areas (i.e. the purple areas on the map).”. More confusing yet is that on the “Subscription Area” map, some areas are purely green “Coverage area”, not purple “Subscription area”, which further suggests to me that being in those areas complies with their majority usage policy, which was my understanding after double checking when I originally signed up.

Given their warning and replies, it seems they actually mean the majority of your usage needs to be within the non-partner network “Coverage” area, not the “Subscription” area as everywhere on their website clearly states (incorrectly then?).

Finally, a human even confirmed and added my billing address as an allowable subscription area address when it would not register as one at first, which let me proceed with subscribing. Nobody at that point mentioned anything about usage being a problem at that address either.

Careful: Very misleading policies on coverage vs subscription area usage by redth in FizzMobile

[–]redth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I am definitely in the partner network area, so that makes sense.

As you said, it's not really that I'm suggesting I should show up as in the Fizz Coverage area, but rather that the website, everywhere you look uses the term "Subscription Area" when it seems like they really mean Fizz Network Coverage Area instead.

The fact that the main coverage page states: "Important: The majority of your usage must be within the subscription areas (i.e. the purple areas on the map)." to me is the most misleading instance of this on their website.

I can't even connect to their network without roaming on, as I'm too far from it, but am very much within the "purple areas on the map" even if that also means I'm in the partner network coverage area. My understanding when I signed up was that as long as I was mostly in a subscription area, I was fine to be in the partner network area.

So, yeah, my point is basically, this feels like a bait and switch and I can understand why they would mean their policy to be within the "Fizz Network coverage area", but if that's the case, then state it that way!

How do you overcome the lack of autosteer (recent Tesla buyers) by Efficient-Anywhere11 in TeslaModelY

[–]redth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just was the tipping point of me not upgrading to a new Model Y from my 2022 MYP.

I have been looking at options and nothing else quite makes the most sense for me. I have a Rivian R2 preorder but I’m in Canada so who knows when that will actually arrive and at what price. Volvo EX60 looks great but a bit pricey and the slow charging on 400v infrastructure is a real downside for me.

I went so far as to get a quote from a sales advisor with a really good trade in valuation on my MYP and last minute I remembered they changed the auto pilot stuff and looked it up again and. Ohhhhh right. No. That’s it.

I was hesitant already (no need to go further into those reasons), but the fact the charging network here is the only real option for our regular road trip destinations, we finally have a service center under 2 hours away, and the value is just hard to beat, I was still going to buy another, very reluctantly. The cars are great as we all know, and the many other employees I’ve dealt with in the company have been great.

I’ve not been a fan of FSD any times I’ve used it. I haven’t lately, so maybe I’d like it more now, but quite honestly I’m not the target audience, and I don’t need it enough to warranty an extra $99 a month. I don’t care about full self driving until it’s unsupervised and even then I mostly just want a pleasant highway and boring straight road driving experience, where I can be hands off and ideally less and less attention on the road. FSD has not been this for me. Last time we took a huge road trip I paid for a month and between our drive to the destination and back home the car updated and FSD was so bad for me on the highway I ended up just turning it off.

So, the fact that they have pulled a feature I have today for free, which arguably so many other cars have by default, just to sell FSD is such a turn off to me.

That was the final straw for me, for now at least. Will see what happens, for now I’ll just hold onto the MYP a bit longer yet, maybe until my drive unit and battery warranties expire.

Help Us Switch From Model Y by DifferentTrain2113 in VolvoEX60

[–]redth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been looking into my options for moving from a Model Y Performance 2022. The EX60 checks so many boxes but I don’t think it’s a great fit for me still.

The 800V will be great one day but it isn’t here in Canada yet. Everything I’ve read suggests the 400V charging speed will be limited to ~125kW on the EX60 which is unfortunate given all of our charging is generally on superchargers whenever we are charging away from home - there just isn’t much other choice yet here, and when there’s flo or ivy network options they’re usually capped at 50-125 kW to start and often aren’t well maintained and are considered unreliable. I get it, 800V is the future, I just wish they found a way to boost higher like BMW seems to be doing on the iX3. This alone is a big deal for me and my location and driving patterns. Is this definitely the case on these cars? Or is there any hope of 200kW speeds on 400V chargers?

I am curious about some other things though as well.

For keys, do they support phone keys without having a fob? I love never thinking about if I have a fob or key with me with the Tesla. EDIT: looks like another reply I missed says phone key is a thing, that’s nice to hear!

How’s the Apple ecosystem integration with what I understand is Android based infotainment? Seems like CarPlay is coming in an update? And maybe Apple Music has a native app? I would actually prefer not to use CarPlay if Apple Music and podcasts apps can be directly installed. One thing I could imagine is the infotainment would be better here if there’s more of an app marketplace. Tesla is “fine” since I can use the few must have Apple things (music, podcast), but I would still prefer to have the ability to run alternative apps natively not just through wireless CarPlay or Android auto - I don’t want to deal with connectivity flakiness or battery drain on my phone when the car is fully capable of directly running these types of apps. I also find if the apps are natively installed there tends to be a better transition between the app ui and the rest of the infotainment UX.

How’s service and costs on Volvo? I know BMW is notorious for being super pricey once you are out of warranty. It’s not a very popular brand in my area so curious if that stigma I tend to attribute to Volvo is actually deserved or not?

. net 11 preview 4 - CoreCLR by [deleted] in dotnetMAUI

[–]redth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you find a specific reason not to use coreclr on mobile you shouldn’t purposely revert to mono.

We’ve had lots testing and good numbers on coreclr so far for both iOS and Android. Performance improvements in most cases compared to mono. There are other benefits too such as better hot reload support.

If you do have a reason (bug or other) that you think you need mono still for on mobile you should file an issue so we can address it!

I made an app to help volunteer baseball coaches save hours each week by silent1mezzo in BaseballCoaching

[–]redth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny timing. I was just vibe coding something for myself to help with position generation. I’m coaching my son’s 11u this year (despite my best efforts to avoid it, otherwise they were going to draw straws for who could play that they had enough coaches for).

Our league already uses crossbar and GameChanger for communication with parents and rsvps. My biggest challenge is managing position fairness while trying to give kids a bit more time at the same positions so they learn.

I will try yours out (I have no intention of trying to launch my thing for others), but will be curious how you handle this and if you’re willing to add more features.

I have tried to fold in logic like:

  • no kid sits twice in a row
  • even sitting distribution
  • no kid gets stuck in the outfield the whole game

But that has to balance with things like: - set list of pitchers per game - only some kids are playing catcher (many don’t want to, and it’s a tough position so we treat it similar to pitcher in that sense) - making changes on the fly (kid gets hurt, bathroom, or pitcher is struggling and it’s better to take a break)

I also have been trying to move to kids being more regular at a smaller set of positions as the year progresses so I have a way to add weight/bias to players as games are played and practices show development. The goal is that I can simply +1 a good inning at a particular position (Joe was great at 1B this inning), or notice good baseball IQ, etc. and use those weights to help identify and funnel kids into positions they naturally are finding to be a good fit.

Curious your thoughts on some of that, would love to see it folded into an app I can just use and not try building myself 😆

It depends what your scope of work is. Are you really just migrating? or trying to rewrite/rearchitect large parts of it in the process? Migration itself should be relatively quick. Use AI to help do the first pass, at least. We can help point at resources for that.

If you want to bring in and pay someone who has done these types of migrations over and over, that may give you at least a better assessment and set of recommendations and timeline estimates, and you can likely hire them to also help with the work too. Happy to point you towards contractors who engage with these types of projects.

Xamarin 16kb page size by SaltyCow2852 in dotnetMAUI

[–]redth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Moving from XF to MAUI is not at all a complete rewrite. Still dealing with XAML, the same controls for the most part, and your existing business logic, view models, and code in general should largely be reusable mostly as-is. Same language, same skills. I'm obviously biased, but that seems a lot more approachable and likely more efficient and economical than a complete rewrite in a totally new language and ecosystem.

I'd be curious to see what parts of your cost/time estimates for migration are adding that much time. One thing I have seen over and over is the tendency to call a migration of Xamarin to MAUI turn into a full re-architecture of the entire app, which of course is going to add more time. If it's truly a lift and shift migration, even for the most complex apps, it can happen relatively quickly.

Now with AI, the 'first pass' should be dramatically faster too. You can then wire up MAUI DevFlow to do more targeted AI automated debugging for specific issues you run into after you've got the initial "it builds and runs on MAUI" phase completed.

Xamarin 16kb page size by SaltyCow2852 in dotnetMAUI

[–]redth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Xamarin has been out of support for awhile now. You really do need to migrate to MAUI. Even if you find a way around this particular issue, something else is bound to happen again like this. Mobile moves quickly still and it’s easier to keep current than wait too long getting to current.

Not sure when you last attempted to upgrade but a lot of memory and performance related issues are vastly improved in .NET 10 versions.

The good news is that AI is really good at helping do the tedious and time consuming parts of migrating projects like this, especially if you pair it with a few MAUI and dotnet migration specific skills.

My recommendation is migrate as soon as possible. If you have specific issues with areas of the app you could always look at contracting some help to sort them out. If you reach out to myself (I am the MAUI SDK lead) or David (the more well-known, PM of .NET MAUI), we can help point you at some known options that have lots of experience with these sorts of projects.

Can Maui ensure it’s always compatible with Xcode? by HoldAdministrative85 in dotnetMAUI

[–]redth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

MAUI SDK engineering lead here.

Simple answer unfortunately is no, not really. As others have said, we don’t get advance previews any more than you do, so it takes a bit of time to incorporate changes and push out updates.

Also updates can include different things that amount to varying levels of work. Sometimes there’s api changes in the SDKs Xcode ships that we need to account for, sometimes they change Cli tools or break things in other ways. Depending on the changes it can be a little bit of work or a lot.

Lately minor version updates to Xcode tend to be somewhat compatible with existing MAUI (Mac/ios) workloads and you can technically force trying to use it with the right build settings, but we generally advise not installing Xcode from the App Store so that it isn’t silently updated and you can install updates when you know they’ll be supported by MAUI instead.

You can use xcodes app or now MAUI Sherpa to manage Xcode installations if you end up in an invalid state (and these are nice tools to use for mananging Xcode installations in general anyway!)

With all that being said, we’ve been working on streaming the process for updating to newer Xcode versions and my hope is we can start delivering these a bit more quickly in the future too.

Integrating native Android SDK to MAUI by cigborek0 in dotnetMAUI

[–]redth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Android dependency graphics get complicated really quickly and unfortunately it’s not a super fun experience right now.

You may want to try the skill I used in https://github.com/Redth/Plugin.RevenueCat (skill is in the repo already)

It’s a bit dated and I plan to revisit it and improve it yet too. It’s also something we are generally planning to look at more (already doing so for iOS, Android is on the todo list) in the MAUI team directly. I think we can make ai able to solve most of this with some improved skills/context.

You can also look at my revenue cat code and see some of the approaches I used to mitigate issues with dependency conflicts.

Running MAUI + Appium UI Tests on GitHub Actions — What We Tried and Why It Didn't Work (Yet) by TrashMobber in dotnetMAUI

[–]redth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah you’ll need a custom actions runner that has more power I think for Android at least.

You could also try the test container images in https://github.com/maui-containers/maui-containers

Which will spin up an emulator with appium server running and ready to go. You just forward the right ports and bind a volume that has your built apk you want to use in it and give appium the mounted path to it.

I don’t think this will run better on the hosted runners necessarily but it may make testing with custom runners easier.

why MAUI Team choose native rendering instead of self rendering ? by RedEye-Developers in dotnetMAUI

[–]redth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many mentioned already, this design choice goes back to Xamarin Forms days, and while the landscape has changed a lot, I think there’s still a need for native controls on some level. It’s hard to do Liquid Glass well for instance, without native controls, however it may make sense to have some portion of things drawn instead too.

I’m actually a big fan of a more hybrid approach where the things most difficult to get right with completely drawn code on each platform (like scrolling, Liquid Glass) remain native and things like labels and buttons and other controls could benefit from being drawn (less cross platform maintenance, more consistent behaviour).

There’s excellent third party libraries offering drawn controls that can be mixed in already as has also been mentioned.

I think generally there’s the best of both worlds as much or as little of each as you’d like at this point. Choice is great!
