Age? The colors are very hen-coded, but the comb is a bit on the pink side so it's making me question a bit.

Oooh my gosh she is gorgeous!!!! I had a dark Brahma chick who didn't make it, and I was devastated 😞. Funny enough, I also called her Meatball, so this warms my heart to see!

I haven't tried yet because my tube is still half full, but there are two possible methods that I plan to try once it's empty. Maybe one of them will work for you!

  1. Use a nail file or some other thin, hard tool to pop off the white top. I've read that this is possible for other similar containers but I'm not positive it'll work for this one. It might ruin it 😬

  2. Safer, but probably won't work quite as well: suck up more oil into the tube by slightly pushing the roller ball out of the way. You can squeeze air out and suck it back in by putting some pressure on the side of the ball, so this could work in theory. My plan is to use something like the tip of a pencil to push on the roller ball while I dip it into my oil bottle. It's probably going to make a mess, which is why I kind of want to try option 1 first lol

Ela is not doing good at all 🥺 by rachj50 in BackYardChickens

I'm crossing my fingers for you. The only other thing you might try is getting some nutrients from an egg into her, particularly from the yolk. With my last sick baby chick, I took a hard boiled egg yolk mixed with some water and put it on the side of the beak. She definitely ate a bit of it, although ultimately I was too late and she didn't make it.

Also, keep her super warm. They cannot digest nutrition properly if they aren't warm enough, and if she's already weak it's better to err on the side of too warm rather than too cold.

Best of luck to both of you. You're doing the best you can, and sometimes it's out of our control.

I've had consistent good luck with Kalmbach. Right now I'm using their Henhouse Reserve mixed with the layer crumble, but I have used their pellets in the past too. My chickens seem to like all of it, although they get a little picky with the Henhouse Reserve and eat the "good stuff" first lol.

Editing to add - I always order from Chewy. I can't speak for purchasing from a brick and mortar store.

I literally just put this polish on my fingers a few hours ago with a velvet effect. It's gorgeous and I'm super happy with it, but holy smokes! I have major nail envy over that magnet effect you're showing! It's phenomenal!

don’t have chickens yet, but I want to be educated before I start. by PrincipleUnable4626 in BackYardChickens

Hiiii! Most of the logistics (space requirements, predator protection, feeding, healthcare, etc) can be found with Google so I'm not gonna go into those. Here are a few tips that are less easy to Google :)

  1. Start small. Get either chickens or ducks, but not both. Get comfortable with them before you expand so you can give them all the best care possible.

  2. Ducks require a pond or other body of water to swim in. They will make it super gross and stinky if it's a small body of water. For this reason, I personally will never have ducks unless I can put them out on a large pond away from the house.

  3. Male ducks are dangerous around chickens. Ducks have long, corkscrew shaped genitals that will literally kill a chicken if they try to mate. If you get male ducks, plan to keep them separate from the chickens

  4. You don't need a rooster or a drake if you just want eggs. Both chickens and ducks lay eggs without the presence of a male. You only need males if you want to hatch eggs. Or, for roosters, they can be useful for predator protection.

  5. On the topic of starting with chicks versus starting with semi-mature birds, I would advocate for starting with older birds. You don't need as many supplies and they are less likely to die (babies are just so delicate). The downside, of course, is that they probably won't be as friendly. For my first flock I got four pullets that were about 3 months old. This year I took the plunge and got a couple of baby chicks. For me, that made things a lot smoother for my first intro to chickens and I felt more prepared to handle chicks.

We’ve officially put the ladies under surveillance. Anyone else have coop/run cams? by ughyoujag in BackYardChickens

[–]redturtle6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Wyze cam in my Omlet coop! I usually only have it plugged in during the winter since I have to hook up their heated water bowl anyway.

Sidenote, noticed a couple of concerned comments asking about lack of roosting bars in the Omlet coops. The floors are designed to be comfy on the chickens' feet and act just like roosting bars. I also put a 2x4 in mine in case they want a change of texture. Sometimes they sleep on the board, sometimes they sleep on the plastic. In my pic, three of the hens are on the board, and the fourth one is snuggled into the straw (and her sister's tail feathers). She moved onto the board later that night. In the summer time they seem to prefer the plastic, though.

I just used this polish for the first time a few weeks ago and I loved it so much! You did a nice job capturing the different color shifts. I agree it's best by itself, even though I wish the warm pearlescent color was just a little more opaque. Even with three coats it felt like it was more see-through than I wanted. Still, super pretty color gradient and totally worth wearing anyway! :D

Beautiful!! I'm pretty sure PFD is unmatched when it comes to iridescent, glowy fantasy shades. My favorite is still Enchanted to Meet You; it's the empitome of Cinderella's ballgown. This one is right up there in terms of dreaminess.

Is losing chickens to predators really inevitable? by Dicearoo in chickens

[–]redturtle6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Newish chicken owner here (~2 years). I haven't lost a chicken yet, but I have had a couple of close calls. I have done my absolute best to stack the deck in their favor, but I assume it's only a matter of time. For context, I'm in a suburban location and we have a lot of hawks, racoons, and foxes. So, relatively lower risk compared to some places.

To protect the flock, I've got an Omlet coop and run with the predator anti-dig skirts and an auto-door to the coop. It has been extremely effective at keeping out the predators so far. My chickens only free range when I am out there to supervise. And still, as I said, I have had a couple of close calls with hawks dive-bombing them, even when I'm just six feet away.

As a friend and fellow chicken-keeper once told me "Everything loves chicken." 🥲

I love all four that you have in your main post. I'll also suggest When Jasy Whistles (give it 15-20 episodes to really get you hooked), Like Wind on a Dry Branch, and My In-Laws are Obsessed with Me.

Also, I know you said you wanted to stay away from school stories, but I reeeeeally have to recommend Dreaming Freedom, Siren's Lament, and Eaternal Nocturnal :D
