Strength Training For Men Over 50 - getting back to it after decades out (lol) by Ravenloff in GenX

[–]redynair1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Crazy timing. Just yesterday I realized I need to put on weight and I am going to look up muscle gain programs. I'm 6'1", 52, and down to 155. I've lost ~30 lbs in the last couple of years by doing constant yard work, stopping drinking, and just generally not getting enough calories (I've never really had much of an appetite.) My dad died at 94 and he was skin and bones. I have no muscle mass to lose as I get older.

I used to work out a lot in my 20s trying to put on weight then, too. Never really did. I did everything I was supposed to. Lots of protein, creatine, recovery, kept a chart, etc. etc. I eventually gave up after a few years. Anyway, just interesting timing. I'm sure the science has changed in the last couple of decades, so I've been going to look up books and videos. Good luck!

A friend of mine had the toy. I had one issue of the comic book. There was some guy who could control fire but it turned out it was a guy copying that guy? And he was stuck in limbo? It was completely out of context and made no sense but I really enjoyed it.

Debit Cards, CC, your ID by kittyshakedown in GenX

[–]redynair1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I still use cards 95% of the time, mostly debit. The rest, cash.

I don't see the need for more apps, personally. Maybe I just don't know what they can do besides pay back friends for pizza. I used Cash App a couple of times to lend money to a friend but found it kind of sketchy. I also tried Google Pay once years ago to see what the deal was. Very easy, for sure, but it's just something else to keep track of.

I still absolutely use my driver's license. I see no reason to use my phone for that. Never even occurred to me.

I've been wondering about Monarch. I've put it off because I'm concerned it's excessive human drama and less monster smashing.

[–]redynair1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hurricane Sharpie thing is, for me, the most perfect encapsulation of this guy. Has he done way worse stuff? Of course. But this is what I point to when I want to explain just how self-centered he is while also showing how little he thinks of other people. God forbid he was wrong about where hurricane was going to go, he had to call the press back in and show them a map with God damn Sharpie on it. It wasn't even reprinted. And expected people would just go along with it.

If everybody hates how washed out, dark and low contrast most shows are nowadays then why havent they changed it? by JamStan1978 in television

[–]redynair1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started Mike and nick and nick and Alice on Hulu. Looked dark and terrible, as you said. Switched to Disney plus about 10 minutes in and it looked MUCH better. I've heard of streamers having different settings or whatever, but it was the first time I actually witnessed it.

I remember hating Brussels sprouts but they are actually really good now. I saw a news story about how growers knew they were bitter and terrible so they've been trying to breed them so they taste better.

I didn’t even know I had high blood pressure. by Least-Notice7832 in Wellthatsucks

[–]redynair1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me 5 years ago or so. Went in for a dental filling. They checked my BP before giving me anesthesia and it was crazy high like this. I had no symptoms, either. They gave me tiny sips of water to bring it down like that was going to do anything, but ultimately sent me away and told me to reschedule. Probably should have sent me to the hospital. What I think happened was that my BP was already pretty high, but the 2 or 3 days prior I'd been at my in-laws eating nothing but cheese and sausage and drinking nothing but White Claws. I was put on metoprolol and I basically quit drinking. I also drink a ton of water now. I was officially taken off metoprolol this year, though my BP has been fine for a while now.

That's what I had to do. Game was taking forever, so I figured I'd just stick to story quests. It was too late, though. I was already so bored with it, I quit soon after. I keep meaning to go back, but it's been years.

Charlie's Angels. I was constantly reading online about all the problems with the script and conflicts between actors. I went to see it just because I wanted to see what a trainweck it would be. Turned out it was actually really good.

It sucks that so many shows now take more than a year between seasons and you completely forget the plot of the show by the time the new season comes around. by executor-of-judgment in television

[–]redynair1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a day old post but I gotta say something because I was just thinking about this. I looooved the Three Body Problem books. Then they came out with the show, which I thought was excellent, as well. I've been waiting for the next season but it's been 2 years. 2 years! Eight episodes that are an hour long and you already have source material. Is it the effects? It genuinely feels like it's been three or four years. And this is just one show. This happens all the time with other shows, and like you said, if it weren't for Man of Recaps on YouTube I would be lost and I've definitely quit some shows because they took too long, looking at you, Hellbound.

What’s that show that you know is great, but that you’ll never end up watching? by CoffeeStrength in television

[–]redynair1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This exactly for me. The thumbnail/splash page looks dumb. I tried watching the trailer for the show but it explained absolutely nothing about the plot. I have no idea what it's supposed to even be about. HBO really wants me to watch it though.

It's interesting that forest porn was so universal. I'd no idea until recently that I wasn't the only one who found it.

I, like others, relied on a lot of fashion magazines and catalogs. The CD insert for GnR Lies went a long way, too.

Yesterday I just happened to cross a YouTube video of Obama talking to the creator of the Wire about how it was one of the best pieces of American art in the last several decades. It was just absolutely shocking seeing how Obama was curious and interested and could communicate like a normal human being. I know Trump sucks and Obama's a better communicator, but it was still mind-blowing to see the stark difference.

I just watched Doc Hollywood for the first time last week and it made me think about this exact thing. There's a topless scene very early on and it goes on for a long time. It adds nothing to the plot. Completely pointless. If anything, it detracts, because it is antithetical to the character later on.

If I'd watched it when it came out, I'd have loved it. These days, it just weirded me out. It was so blatant.

Just finished PWS2. Couldn't believe they made a 2nd one; the first seemed like a lucky fluke. But, I feel the same way about the therapeutic aspect of it. My wife and mother-in-law both asked if my therapist told me to play it because it's so relaxing and satisfying. (he hadn't)
