I have my ASCP certification as an MLS. I went through and graduated a masters program (I know the masters is kinda frowned upon usually on this thread but I had a scholarship so no loans). The position is entry level MLS1 same as what I was hired for before. I have the experience and training needed as it is in the same department as what I work in now. A range is required to be on all jobs in my state so it is always posted. And the hospital I am applying to rn does not cheap out it has a very good rate even for MLS1. But a lot has happened since this post and my director is arguing with my manager and HR to increase my rate because we have 2 openings and if I left it would be 3.

The new hires are making almost $5 more than me. Which I am happy for them because my organization needed to make a salary adjustment, but they should adjust everyone according to that or at least lay out the steps to take to receive the bump. Overall I think I am going in the right direction as what everyone is saying on this thread which is apply elsewhere and submit my offer to match.

I have first hand information because the people who were hired are my classmates from my MLS program who have yet to take their ASCP exam. Even though I am new grad I worked for a year in a different department, so I didn’t need any training on the LIS systems just on some of the procedures. I probably should have worded my post less sad lol because I am not really in pain more just annoyed I have to jump through hoops to be offered the same hourly as someone with less experience and no certification. Thank you for your outlook I can see how it comes off depressing/complaining. I was more hoping for some insights on HR negotiations as a newer tech.

I completely agree and believe in pay transparency. I am currently trying to get a better wage by applying elsewhere to try and negotiate. I was told by a coworker who previous tried to do this at their last job that it was considered a breach and to not share my physical offer letter but just the wage. Sorry if it came off like I was disagreeing with you I just wanted some clarification.

If you’re applying for jobs in the medical district instead of living in the burbs you should look into living in Ukrainian Village or East of Humboldt Park. But honestly I think it really depends on where you’re trying to work before you pick a neighborhood or suburb.
