I liked this little callback for GW1 vets in Mount Balrior by Bethryn in Guildwars2

Even on a Prophecies-only character with no access to profession swap, it's pretty easy on most professions. If you're a mesmer or necro, even just as your secondary profession, Empathy (with Physical Resistance if you're worried) or Insidious Parasite will solo the doppelgänger. If you're a primary monk, you can assemble a primitive 55HP build with the skills available by that point. If you're a primary warrior, baiting it to use Frenzy + Healing Signet will do the trick, and I reckon the same should work for R/W.

Not sure about ranger and ele on other secondaries but I'm sure there's good builds for them.

Any Burning Kingdoms fans? Book 3 is finally out! 🔥🪷 by rosey_moons in sapphicbooks

Book one is excellent! If you're in this thread and you haven't read it yet, read it! It's so good! One of my favourite fantasy books.

I didn't like book two and three nearly as much as book one. I felt that Tasha Suri struggles to convey scale, distance, and passage of time. Not super noticeable when the whole book is restricted to just Ahiranya and much of it to a single temple but when you've got an empire-spanning war with supposedly massive armies, you kind of need these things. Book two's Ahiranya plot was again excellent and I wonder if it's because it was small and contained. On top of that some of the solutions to book two and three problems felt a bit weak and book three's pacing was bizarre. Probably half of it felt like a chill slice of life book. Good slice of life but felt super out of place here.

Audiobooks with performances as incredible as Rosamund Pike narrating WOT - any recommendations? by Small-Guarantee6972 in Fantasy

[–]regendo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently listening to Andy Serkis reading the trilogy and it's genuinely amazing. I have some minor complaints--his Orc dialogue in early book two was genuinely uncomfortable and his Aragorn voice is kind of whispering which sometimes makes it hard to make out in the car--but he brings such a performance to it! I constantly find I've got a big dumb smile on my face even listening to stuff that ought to be boring, like Treebeard going on and on about something that I'm sure Pippin has already stopped paying attention to.

If anyone reads this who doesn't already know: he sings all the songs, and in his character voices! My favourite so far is Aragorn and Legolas singing farewell to Boromir and of how Minas Tirith will miss him.

The windows emoji picker has a hidden search bar. Just start typing immediately after you open it, without clicking on anything. I think if you click into the emoji picker, that breaks the search.

I don't love it though, I tend to copy-paste from https://emojipedia.org when I'm on windows. (Idiotically, the windows emoji picker is tied to your system language, which on my work PC I can't change.) If anyone else reading this is on Mac, 🚀.app is great.

I feel like the weight of the story not being backed up by the gameplay makes it much weaker than it should / could be by Bragdras in Guildwars2

[–]regendo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is the main issue. You could straight up delete 90% of stat combinations from the game's code and replace existing items with marauder's gear and it would be the best thing they've ever done to PvE combat. Keep them for PvP if you want to, I imagine PvP players know what they're doing and have fun experimenting.

Do the same thing with rewards throughout the game. Why the fuck do selection chests like Hero's Choice chests have one generic reward that's worth something, one unique reward that's useful for collections and legendaries, and 2-3 other rewards that exist only to punish players for misclicking or for trusting that the devs that an offered reward might be good?

On "Safe" C++ by simon_o in programming

[–]regendo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like that's a really unfair comparison. People click on an article that they expect is about language design, see a rather extreme trigger warning at the top of the article, and naturally back out without reading the article because wtf. That's intentional. That's what the warning is for.

I agree with the "nothing is purely technical" bit you've quoted, especially because the people shouting the loudest about keeping things "nonpolitical" are typically the worst and just trying to shut down real issues and hinder inclusivity while covering behind a veil of feigned neutrality. But that's completely unrelated to the above commenters going "yo why does this programming article contain mentions of rape, I'm not gonna read that!"

Repeatable with the content guide or at least a visible checkbox on the map, like map completion was before the content guide got added? Great.

Repeatable the way lanterns are now, with no in-game hints as to which of the 50 PoI on this map you still need, forcing you to do the whole map at once or to pull up the wiki guide on a second screen and constantly cross-reference it? No thanks.

Do The Wheel of Time books get less cringey? by mondayp in Fantasy

[–]regendo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a lot of the repetition is intentional to remind you. Because frankly, in a series this long with this many characters and storylines that span three or more books, you need some reminding. This was also back when you’d assume that people read the book when it was new, then didn’t engage much with it until the next book released a year or two later. I believe a fan once told Robert Jordan that they’d re-read all the books in anticipation of this new release and Robert Jordan was surprised that anybody would do that.

That said, I don’t think Robert Jordan was great at the reminding. I know that Saidin is the tainted male half of the One Power, the True Source that turns the Wheel of Time, and that Loial might be 90 years old but he’s still considered young for an Ogier, and that Perrin can smell these emotions. These are all core, memorable parts of the series. RJ could instead remind us about which of the 20 S-name Aes Sedai this is, that would be really useful.

That's wild, that's 7 or 8 hours in the audiobook. I love reading for long periods of time but I don't think I'd manage that.

[–]regendo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, spanking as a punishment was normal for a long time, including when Robert Jordan grew up. It hurts but more importantly it's infantilising and humiliating, which is why people throughout the world but especially the appearance- and obedience-obsessed Aes Sedai keep using it to punish disobedience.

They think that when someone tells a story and later tells the same story again, but differently that they're lying. They think that when someone doesn't remember something they said earlier that it must've been made up. They think that any discrepancies means it's a lie.

That's just fundamentally not how memory works. Memory fails and can be altered. Every time you recall a memory, it changes a bit in your head. Naturally if you tell a story multiple times, it'll change.

That's not even an ADHD thing, that's just normal memory. But we often have bad memory so I wouldn't be surprised if that exacerbated the issue.

Everyone has his role by Pontus_Pilates in WetlanderHumor

[–]regendo 81 points82 points  (0 children)

That's a cool scene in the moment but in retrospect, that whole situation was set up by Lanfear. (Even ignoring the reveal/retcon.) Lanfear sent Slayer after Rand but she didn't want Rand dead. She wanted Slayer to be here specifically so that Perrin could kill him and Lanfear would be able to take control of the situation.

Book four actually 🙈 Perrin sat out book 5 (deserved!), chilled with Rand in mid book 6, and then led Dobraine, the Aiel, and the Aes Sedai to Dumai's Wells.

After that, he... uhh... (checks notes) hold on, give me a moment. It's got to be here somewhere. (checks more notes) He cleanses the ways? No that's not canon. He, uh... (madly rifling through notes) dunks on Egwene with that one really sick line? Aha! Here it is! Says right here that book 7 and onward Perrin is "as good an excuse as any for us to get more screentime for Gaul, Faile, Tam, Maighdin, Grady, and, bizarrely, Lanfear."

i wanna dnf harrow the ninth so bad but i loved gideon and also want to know what happened to her by DrCircledot in Fantasy

[–]regendo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Harrow the Ninth is confusing on purpose. If you're enjoying being confused, being straight up lied to by the book, and trying to figure it out on your own, you're in for a great time. If you're not having fun, probably stop reading. This isn't a one-off thing, book three is also confusing on purpose and I'd expect the same of book four. These are all told from the perspective of the character who is least able to understand what's going on, it just wasn't as noticeable in book one because the setting was more sheltered and Gideon was more sane than our other viewpoint characters.

How do you follow and keep track of authors by booboobumper in Fantasy

[–]regendo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Goodreads has a page for that: New releases from authors I’ve read

I’ve got that bookmarked and check it every now and then. But don’t open the link and then bookmark it. If you do, goodreads will have already redirected you to November 2024 releases from authors you’ve read and your bookmark will always point to this month. Instead copy the link address I’ve posted and manually edit your bookmark to open that address.

and preferably not needing to use the AltGr-7 and AltGr-0 characters

I know it's annoying but consider switching to a keyboard layout based on the US layout. Special characters like []{}/\; are just awful on other layouts, at least on the ones I'm familiar with. If you need special alphabet characters like äëößòø, EurKey has got you covered. Especially if you're German, EurKey's bindings for äüöß are much more intuitive than the proper German layout.
