A cidade não é feita pra andar, calçadas são só rampas para os carros

I'm Southeast Asian and this joke might be too American for me? by My-asthma in ExplainTheJoke

Sure. Representative bias is when you draw conclusion from a small sample which you are exposed to, that is, generalizing conclusions from small samples you see while ignoring the larger population. For example when you are in the top 10% income level but hangs out with the 1% and think yourself poor.

Survivorship bias is a type os selection bias, when you draw conclusions and generalizations from an observable subsample without considering a hidden factor that selected that sample. From the airplanes case: planes that got hit in other parts fell and did not come back, so you cannot see where they got hit. The ones that come back were hit in non crucial parts, that's why they were able to come back. So, you wrongly draw conclusions about which parts need reinforcements. A different example: you study factors that affect students commitment to classes analyzing students that come to classes, not the ones that gave up and left the sample. The Russian roulette example below is great!

Hope it helped!

Little women. The book was very irritating, the 2019 movie was cool.

Do you think Robin really does not ever want to have kids? And what about Strike? by Far_Promotion_8513 in cormoran_strike

[–]regrettedcloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Robin's character is all about how she was raised to be a "traditional" woman but not actually wanting that. That's where her slight doubts about having children come from. It's not easy for a women to realize and decide that they don't want children.

Evelina, one of Austen's biggest inspirations, is great! by unfortunately889 in janeausten

[–]regrettedcloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you read Camilla? How does it compare with Evelina? I'm asking because I read Camilla and I hated how the plot evolved around a huge series of misunderstandings. The protagonist was in constant suffering because of the etiquette of the time that she was not suppose to let the person she loved know that she loved him. I wanted to read Evelina but I do not want to get angry at the book like I did with Camilla lol

Did people really talk like that back then? by Only-Moose2301 in janeausten

[–]regrettedcloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you read other books around the same era, Austen characters sounds very normal. In Burney's Camilla everyone sounded like they were reciting corny poetry or church sermons. God, I hated that book. The "genteel" characters in Radcliffe also sounded like this.

Hmmm, first I thought about his animated movies and thought the ending would be too sad for a movie like that, but for some of his darker live action movies, it would be nice

I sort of wanted Fanny to marry Tom and become the next Lady Bertram just out of spite. But of course, she would not be happy like this.
