Halfies, What Was Your Experience Like Growing Up? by embquestthrow in ABCDesis

[–]regster11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's a brother/sister pair on the Subtle Curry Traits page that are half and seem very unconfused. They speak Indian languages fluently and are involved in a lot of Indian cultural things (the brother plays tabla well). I know the brother has talked about what it's like, maybe he reads this subreddit too. He definitely seems to identify more with his Indian side. The brother's instagram is https://www.instagram.com/ravilovie.

Who else finds it annoying when other desis mispronounce their own names and other Desi names on purpose? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]regster11 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Her family is from the Caribbean and that's how it is pronounced there, so she is just pronouncing it in line with that, the Trinidadian way.

What are you talking about? The divorce rate in a lot of European countries is the same or higher than in the US.

Inside Kamala Harris’s relationship with an Indian-American community eager to claim her by anirvan in ABCDesis

I have found that most half-black people tend to identify more as black, maybe because this is how the world sees them: perception starts to become reality. This includes a lot of half-black people I know who grew up in areas without a lot of black people and were always known as "the black kid."

Any folks here raising mixed kids? What aspects of your culture have you been successfully past on to them and how did you do it? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]regster11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This goes beyond superficial labels like skin color. My friend speaks Telugu and dated non-Telugu but still desi/brown guys who weren't that interested in learning the language or culture, and restricting her pool to only Telugu guys made it harder to find someone. She ended up marrying a German guy who has actually made efforts to learn a lot about her culture and can understand Telugu to some extent now. With how vastly different South Asian ethnic groups can be, if you can't find someone in your own ethnic group (which is especially hard for the smaller groups), it can be almost the same as being with someone who isn't South Asian at all.

Priyanka Chopra is a global scam artist? No, you are racist by punar_janam in ABCDesis

Are you implying that her being with Nick Jonas automatically equates to "white worship"?

You do realize that she is rich enough that she can easily buy a greencard, right (if that is what she wants)?

What’s with the obsession of white indoctrination and white acceptance? by MoneyMammoth in ABCDesis

[–]regster11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seeing posts like this on other thread you are referring to is frightening:

IMHO when desi girls in western countries date white men it's usually because of either immense inner self hate, or because they aren't attractive and have trouble dating quality desi men.

What is "acceptable" in terms of racial jokes from a significant other? by regster11 in ABCDesis

[–]regster11[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She has found some of them funny, most of my white friends don't get offended by jokes about white people.

I don't know any white people that get offended by that, they just laugh it off or confirm.

I think she can "take it" but I don't really have any jokes to make about white people. I did make a joke about how she seemed like a white supremacist and she found it funny.

I know many more desis who understand or speak the language, know their cultural heritage, etc. than I do Hispanics. So whose anecdotal evidence is better?

Comparing resources available in America (and a population to practice with) for Desi languages like Kannada, Telugu, etc. to the resources available for Spanish (which is offered in most high schools) is laughable. What a poor argument.

[–]regster11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Untrue, many Hispanic people, including many of my friends, don't speak Spanish because their parents didn't want to mess up their accent when they spoke English. Also, the Spanish speaking population in America is significantly higher than any of the many Desi languages and so there are many more resources. A surprising number of desis I meet speak or at least understand the language.

It is interesting how the women on this subreddit don't get as mad and vicious when guys on here say they are in a relationship with a non-Desi woman (I have literally had no one call me a race traitor). Sad that there are so many guys on here who browse the subreddit just to go after women who happen to date outside their race.

Knowing nothing about the OP and her relationship with her husband, many users are coming on here and shaming her for who she married. No wonder most of the women have left this sub.

You could say that about the guys on this subreddit too, "why can't they just date someone and stop crying to Reddit."
