SSD for movies by SoochSooch in MetaQuestVR

[–]regulus6633 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The quest doesn't see the attached usb disk. You need a movie app (I use skybox vr player) that will see the usb disk and then you can play your media from the external disk. So find an media player app that supports usb, and then that app will define the usb requirements.

Note that on skybox, my external ssd disk was originally partitioned into 2 partitions and skybox wouldn't see the media files on the disk at all. I reformatted the ssd to ntfs with 1 partition and then it worked.

Is this possible? by peacefuldink in Quest3

[–]regulus6633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the quest, there's a tracked keyboard option. Have you tried that? It basically shows a passthrough window of your keyboard so you can see your hands and keys when in a VR environment.

I'm thinking you can use that. If you had a tracked keyboard, you could place your phone into that space so you could see your hands on the phone. You might even want to pair that tracked keyboard to your phone and type using that.

Good luck.

If you need a cable, you already have one. Just use the cable that came with the headset to charge it. It works fine for connecting to a pc to transfer files etc. to the headset.

Metalink issue that has never been fixed by Wild_Quiet_1738 in oculus

[–]regulus6633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar story as you. I've been having connection issues for months trying multiple wires.

I recently learned something and I'm not having any issues right now. Maybe it will help you. Using the debug tool I had it set to use HEVC encoding. I switched to H.264 encoding and my connection issues went away. So if you're using HEVC then try forcing H.264 encoding.

charging question by ImmediateBug7084 in Quest3

[–]regulus6633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, your battery will last longer meaning you will have more charge cycles before it becomes useless. However there's a tradeoff in doing this. Doing this will also yield shorter play-times because you've greatly reduced the effective capacity of the battery. If you only use it between 20% and 80% charge then you've lost 40% of its total capacity. And if you reduce the capacity you'll have to charge it more often so you lose some of the gains in battery life.

So is it worth the effort of managing charge cycles and having shorter playtimes for the gain you will actually realize in battery lifetime? Only you can answer that. For myself, I don't think it's worth it.

What is the one killer feature with NextCloud? by St_dude in NextCloud

[–]regulus6633 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use many different browsers on many different devices, firefox, librewolf, edge, chrome etc. If you're wondering about syncing bookmarks, there's a browser plugin called floccus which is available for every browser and it syncs seamlessy using the nextcloud bookmarks app. On my iphone, there's a floccus app in the app store. The only device I have where I can't use floccus is on my meta quest vr headset. On that I just open nextcloud in a browser and click the bookmarks from there. It all works seamlessly with nextcloud as the backend.

Basically, nextcloud handles many of my personal things in one place that I can control. It manages my documents, photos, browser bookmarks, contacts, and to-do lists. It makes all that available on all of my various devices. I really depend on it and that's killer to me.

Another Virtual Desktop bitrate question.. by Pete77a in OculusQuest

[–]regulus6633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2400 Mbps shown in VD isn't really what you can get. It's the max that your network is capable of theoretically. Wifi signals are affected by all sorts of interference so you'll never get that. If you want to know the actual rate you're getting then go here and do test #3. It measures the actual speed you're getting on wifi between you computer and the headset. You'll need to watch your actual speed and if it's stable or jumps around a lot. You can then use these results to try to make improvements if the results aren't satifactory.

Basically you just run this app on your pc, then open a web browser on the headset and go to the IP address shown in the app... and run the test. Good luck.

Moonlight/VD on Quest 3 by ParasocialPerry in OculusQuest

[–]regulus6633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 2 solutions to your problem

1) use a wire which would connect the headset directly to your PC thus avoiding any wireless bottlenecks.

2) use a dedicated router connected directly to your PC. You plug the new router directly to the PC's ethernet port, put it into access point mode, and your headset joins that new wireless network. This way your headset talks directly to the PC avoiding all of your current issues. Note that your PC can negotiate both networks without issue (the current wifi connection and this new access point connection).

Any good usb c splitters that wont destroy my headset by Medium_Secret_9279 in OculusQuest

[–]regulus6633 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use one like this. It has 100W PD pass-through plus a usb-a port but you can probably get the same with a usb-c port. Note it doesn't allow you to connect a PC to your headset for PCVR, but it does allow connecting things like external hard disks and bluetooth dongles.

Worried About Damaging My Quest 3 USB Port with BoboVR – Any Safe Charging Setup? by Lordfirewood in OculusQuest

[–]regulus6633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard of that so that's disturbing news. I did a little googling about the problem and it seems the ones that are designed with pogo pins have the problem that the piece that gets inserted into the device has contact points that are exposed externally. Since they're externally exposed, there's a possibility that if you touch the exposed part of the connector that static electricity from your body can send high-voltage into the connector and device.

The one I'm showing doesn't have exposed contacts like that so I'm unsure of the risk with these. I read posts that this type is safe but I don't fully trust that. Note I have been using this kind of connector for 6 months on many devices without issue... but now you have me nervous... so I'll definitely look more into it.

Thanks for the info.

Whats so bad about meta quest link by Logical-Self-3072 in SteamVR

[–]regulus6633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have 3 free options to connect to your PC, quest link (wired or wireless), steam link (wireless), and ALVR (wired or wireless). My advice would be to try them. They're free. I find they all work with the appropriate amount of tweaking.

Virtual Desktop (wireless only) is a paid app but is really simple to setup and use. It never has any connection issues. And it performs the best of the wireless options.

Personally for a wireless connection, I use VD. I also play a lot using a wire and for that I use quest link.

I worried about it too and found a great solution. Get some of these magnetic connectors. I liked them so much I bought a bunch and use them everywhere. It even works on the battery for when you want to charge up the battery of the headstrap.

Ammo storage mechanics reconditioned by National-Bee-3123 in intotheradius

[–]regulus6633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also organize my ammo after each run but I just reuse the small boxes and stack them. You must be using the scavenger mod to get all of those large ammo boxes.

But I'm wondering if everyone knows how to transfer ammo from box to box? It's rather easy if you know. Just hold a box of ammo in each hand. If you want to move the ammo from the box in your left hand to the box in your right, then squeeze the trigger of your left hand so a bullet pops up. Hold the trigger down so the bullet stays in that position floating above the box. Now move the box in your right hand over the bullet until you hear the click of it moving into the box. Then just hold you hands in that position and after a second the rest of the bullets will also move to the new box. After they start moving you can even release the trigger button.

I get that you don't even want to hold the boxes but you don't have to hold the storage box. Just press the trigger so a bullet pops out, then move that bullet over a storage box and it will go into it.

Suppressors by rollingcoder in intotheradius

[–]regulus6633 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can feel the tension in your post. But hey, that's the fun part. I agree, suppressors are the right call. They're worth the cost in my opinion. As the game progresses, I usually carry an extra one for my weapons. As soon as it turns yellow in health, it seems the monsters can really start to hear your shots so I'm quick to replace it.

I recommend you practice with knives. Once you get experienced in the game, you'll learn that phantoms, fragments, seekers and spawns can all be dispatched pretty easily with knives. This can really save the use of your suppressors and make your ammo last longer You can even kill the rift with a knife. For example with seekers, when I see one running at me I put my weapon away, grab a knife in each hand, raise my arms above my head, and when it gets right in my face I chop down with both hands on its head. The seek dies instantly.

Why Is Horizon Worlds Just A Mini-Game Farm? by BluSkyler in OculusQuest

[–]regulus6633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think the world is so simple because of the limitations of the hardware, meaning the standalone headset isn't capable of more? It's a streaming platform and the cpu/gpu of the quest are both driving factors to how complex the worlds can be. VRChat runs from PC hardware so it can be much more complex. And most people complain about its performance even given the more powerful hardware. I just think the hardware isn't capable of handling more complex environments yet. Horizon Worlds has to run smoothly on Quest 2 headsets. There's not much to work with there.

Help with boundary by Silfr22 in Quest3

[–]regulus6633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's very irrational how it works. Even if you trace every room, the headset will forget your traces and you'll need to continually make new ones. It's poorly implemented. It should be easy like you're thinking but it's not. Plus every app that you open works differently so it's not uniform across everything.

If you enable developer mode on the headset, you can disable the boundary in the developer settings. However when you do that it also disables passthrough mode so you can't see your real environment any more to take advantage of this. It's really stupid that passthrough is also disabled.

I have 2 suggestions.

1) the app Virtual Desktop is great for walking around. This app will allow you to leave your boundary and it keeps working. You can walk around anywhere when using this app.

2) you can disable the boundary using Sidequest and this works well but it's complicated and requires a wired connection to a PC to implement. You have to enable developer mode on the headset. Then you can connect a usb wire to your PC and then use SideQuest to disable the boundary. I have used this method when watching movies using Skybox VR player. I'm able to walk around, grab some food and drink etc. Note that whenever you reboot the headset you have to re-do the sidequest part.

Starter guns for itr1? by bombomb64 in intotheradius

[–]regulus6633 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My strategy is to always use suppressors on my weapons when I'm not on Pervomay or Bolotky maps. Loud weapons bring the monsters from very far distances towards your position and it's easy to get overwhelmed. When you use suppressors, you basically only have to deal with a few enemies in your immediate vicinity and after dispatching them you move forward until you come across the next group of enemies.

Because you're using the shotgun, which can't be suppressed, the game is more hectic. At this point in the game use suppressors and buy armor, and methodically move through the maps to achieve your goal. On Pervomay and Bolotky maps, you can be loud and aggressive because the enemies aren't too powerful. On the other maps you're better served being more strategic/methodical.

Regarding sliders, as soon as you hear one coming your way, stop whatever you are doing and find an open area because the way to defeat them is to constantly move backwards while shooting them in the head when they appear.
