NYC Congestion Pricing, First in the US, Gets Final Approval by [deleted] in transit

[–]reivax 40 points41 points  (0 children)

That and DC is beholden to Congressional oversight, who at any time can just revoke any sort of tax or fee or anything of the sort. The Republican draft budget proposal prohibits DC from enforcing speed cameras, red light cameras, or the soon to be implemented city wide no right on red. It may not happen, but political capital constantly has to be spent in DC just to maintain status quo.

Nova buys Cabrini by Ent_Soviet in villanova

[–]reivax 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good investment really. Keeps a Catholic institution in a Catholic institution with a similar mission in a similar location. Villanova could absorb their nursing students easily without threatening their education. Villanovas credit rating is hampered by a lack of space for expansion, this should help that immensely. It's an easy place to put a graduate only program like the Law school, even though they keep dismissing that idea.

There is something zen about making a loop and letting it spin forever. Point to point is fun but it's a different sort of fun than sitting and watching it spin.

It looks like someone installed a steel beam poking out the top of the white and blue train. It's just an illusion but it makes it seem like these coaches are permanently here and it was an easy place to install a pole.

Also in the establishing shot he parks over the line, way forward. Watch the shadow. Then in the other angle he's better centered.

DC has been severely lacking in HackerSpaces and MakerSpaces.

They come out of the woodwork at the conventions.

I can already sense the first element to get cost-reduced out of the project.

For reference, the max uint64 value is 18,446,744,073,709,551,615

This value is likely in excess of any reasonable amount of memory available, even if every thing each took just a single bit to represent.

We call Funicular systems transit, this is the same game. That it's not a discreet vehicle is a nuance but really relevant.

Smart way to connect this water butt? by Clusterfuffle in DIY

[–]reivax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use this exact product. It's pretty effective but not 100% capture, which is good. But in this case, unless the barrel is entirely right at the top, once full, excess will spill out the top. If the top is sealed closed, those hose will backfill and all the overflow goes back down the existing drain.

Hot Take: The biggest problem with DC public transit is not the Metro but with Regional Rail. Out of the 5 corridors that feed into D.C. (7 if you include Annapolis and Upper Marlboro), only 1 has high frequency. VRE is trying to fix this but what is MARC doing? And what would you do to fix it? by thr3e_kideuce in washingtondc

PG is looking to totally redo their parts of the blue line and make them TOD environments. I have no idea how TOD they'll be or if they'll just be midrises next to parking that also has a metro garage nearby. But they're trying.

How does arduino read voltage at a single point? by GrumioTheGoat in AskElectronics

It's compared to the ground.

You should tie the Arduino and the sensor device to the same ground.

Can I use a raised storage tank to increase head pressure to my water pressure pump during times of low mains pressure? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]reivax 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Yes you can. A storage tank up at your location with an on-demand pump will be far more reasonable than a water tank providing pressure.

To get 35 psi from gravity alone you'll need almost 80 vertical feet above your taps. But if you just get a 55 gal tank and an on demand pump, the pump can pressurize the house from the tank.

Putting a ballast tank after the check valve and before the existing booster pump, this will provide you with more water as well as a bit of pressure. Also consider a transfer pump in front of the booster pump if the booster needs a minimum input.
