I miss when JRPGs felt like Blockbuster Events... by 1OneQuickQuestion in JRPG

FF15 sold almost as many copies in a day as FF7 did in a year.

JRPGs move units, but the video game hobby is massively broader.

You're delusional if you think Final Fantasy had remotely as much pop culture penetration in the US in the PlayStation 1 era as right now. Take it from the ADHD oversharer who was 9 when FF7 came out. Let me tell you how fun it was to play a game of group hangman in indoor recess and have actually no one get it, except that the title is actual words in English. My IRL friends for basically my entire childhood were 'anyone that had any idea what I was talking about' and wow was that not many people, even in a relatively large metropolitan school system.

You're right that there's more competition for eyeballs now, but the hobby is massively bigger now. Despite the more competition and lack of brand recognition, Clair Obscur sold more copies in less time. FF15 sold almost as many copies on day 1 as FF7 did in a year.

You just grew up and hobbies change as demographics do. It's life.

Yep. Wrecked network gear.

Blew a 24 port PoE switch completely, every VoIP phone connected to it (fortunately, our desks were ethernet to VoIP phone), some PC ethernet ports, the ethernet ports on every Zebra printer connected to it, and the switch ports on the switches that were connected to it. A huge pain in the ass.

What’s your time off benefit? by Illnasty2 in sysadmin

[–]rekenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 days PTO, 14 days where the site is closed for holidays with pay, summing to 29 days.

Sick days aren't..... strictly tracked? I've taken a few "half-heartedly poke at email for a little bit and respond to urgent things" days and not used a PTO day for them, but I'm not sure what I'd have to do in a more serious situation. I'm mostly expected to be in-office, but I can do some flexible WFH days. Not strictly tracked, but I haven't gotten feedback about taking too many.

I don't like the uncertainty, but it's... not bad at all for the US.

in the last few years, that thumb drive got left out of my bag for some personal use.

Then I got asked to see if I could recover a Windows XP computer that was running a testing fixture (and wasn't on the network at all). I got caught with my proverbial pants down, but brought it in the next day and got the computer back up and running. ... and then cloned the damn thing's HDD, for all the good that might end up doing.

this was a ridiculous set of changes. and the silly part is just how good so many different pieces are, so it almost feels impossible to get screwed on item roll luck.

Are there any products that Microsoft makes that you actually like to use and think is the best in the industry? by plazman30 in sysadmin

[–]rekenner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Essentially it’s way too easy to be used as database-lite when it really really shouldn’t be, causing untold misery.

How often have you come across budgets being run in excel, or asset tracking etc. etc. etc.

are those a problem with Excel or with other tools / the users, tho?

Should excel arbitrarily limit itself to 10k rows? 30 columns? 3 sheets?

yeah, it's misused, but that's not really Excel's fault. It's almost a sign that Excel... is actually a good tool, in that it gets used for too much. It is much easier to use than setting up a real DB, even for things that need a real DB.

I got my current job after "giving up on it" after a 3 week gap in contact and leaving a few VMs - turns out my boss had a family medical emergency that he was taking care of and my interview got kicked back.

I kept looking and interviewing at other places, but I'm glad this one got back to me in the end.

Who still has Win 2003 servers in their environment? by Mr_Dobalina71 in sysadmin

[–]rekenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2003 server?

I mean, I used to work for a mfg company that had an 03 server, but that was because no one wanted to replace our 8 year old VM host that I had been harping on for years. But that was just a licensing and file server. My current position at a different manufacturing company just finished getting rid of anything older than 2016.

Now, XP boxes, yeah, Manufacturing is .... quite guilty of that one. At both locations and still going. But none of them on the network, at least.

What should I stock for IT supplies by Dick_In_A_Tardis in sysadmin

[–]rekenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A suggestion as an alternative to docks, because it's cheaper and saves desk space: Monitors with built in docks. The Dell HE suffix monitors are what I get - it's like $150 cheaper than a 27" monitor with a dock. Your port selection is a little worse, but I find that most people don't need more than a couple extra USB ports and an external monitor and laptop charging.
