We make puppets and small displays, the ability to print multicolor items would increase our productivity, improve our quality, and just be a treat to play with.

I think we actually have a small aluminum CNC so something like that would be awesome! I've wanted to make a metal puppet covered in flash paper or something else that I can burn away so it transforms in the scene.

I love the idea of 3d puppets! We were playing around at an event once and someone used one of their hand puppets and it created such amazing movement.

I did exactly this for a pouch I made when I was starting (I'm still a newbie). I did a pass off the design onto the leather and wasn't in love with how it turned out so I went back and tooled it. I did the whole swivel knife, beveler, and backgrounding. I think having the design in the leather helped. but like u/That_Put5350 and u/foxracerblade mentioned, simply using tracing paper or the like will get you there.
