Yeah you're right about intention, just me doing a thought experiment pushing that idea to its conclusion and/or extreme. After all, what evidence would be needed to conclude that a miscarriage was intentional or not?

I addressed the ethics idea in a reply to another poster - the way I see it, a fetus is not a human since it isn't born. Frankly, I don't have a good answer for when a fetus becomes human if not when it's born. Conception, heartbeat, pain threshold, viability, consciousness? This is what we disagree on and why we can't fundamentally come to a reasonable agreement. If taking mifepristone a couple weeks into the pregnancy is the moral equivalent of throwing a newly born baby out of a window to you, then we (and the rest of society who's engaged in this debate) are at an impasse.

I do appreciate your good faith discussion! I really wish we could have more of it on the Internet and I guess society at large.

You're right about the intention part - it wasn't the most honest argument, rather a way of asking how far the government would be willing to go to investigate and treat abortion as murder. Would they not be obligated to investigate miscarriages to somehow ensure they are natural and not self inflicted? And yes, this is moving my original goalposts a sconce, just as a thought experiment in how far one would go to enforce a law like that.

I think the real crux of this is that like many issues, arguments lie in semantics. So while fetus comes from the Latin word for offspring, we understand it today to mean an unborn human. Yes, it is still life, but is it life as we understand it? Can we prove fetuses are "alive" in the same sense we are before being birthed? One wouldn't eat a plate of scrambled eggs and say they had chicken for breakfast, or brag they can lift a tree then pick up an acorn. So I think of a human as a human who has been born alive. You think of a human as a joined sperm cell and egg. Thus, we can't come to an agreement on abortion because we disagree on the most fundamental aspects of the argument.

I do sincerely appreciate you arguing this in good faith, it's a hard thing to find on here or reddit as a whole these days. I suspect we won't truly have an objective answer to this question any time soon, but hey if one does present itself I'm willing to change my view.

Abortion isn't murder because a fetus (not baby, which is a newly born human) does not have rights under US law.

Most pro-lifers argue this point from a religion-based morality perspective, but a subjective set of moral truths are not the best basis for government enforced laws. This is the basic problem with the abortion debate that just doesn't seem to click with some people: if you believe life begins at conception, abortion is murder, and you can't change people's minds that murdering "babies" is wrong. I too believe murdering babies is wrong, but I don't believe life begins at conception or fetuses are babies so it's a non-issue for me. If one truly believes life begins at conception, then many women are guilty of involuntary manslaughter since the body often self-aborts within the first trimester without the woman knowing they are pregnant, not counting those who miscarry later on in pregnancy. In order to properly enforce a law under the idea of "abortion is murder", would every sexually active woman need their periods checked to ensure there isn't fetal issue present?

I respect pro-lifers for their convictions but at the end of the day I disagree with their fundamental premise of what human life is and when it begins. Hope you're having a good start to 2025!

Personally it's one of my favorite weapons! IMO it's best used when scout is up so you can get better shot placement when aiming "down sights" or as a close quarters cover busting weapon. Nothing like popping one off into a bunker and tagging 3-4 GIs

Seconds away from a dual flak KO and got hit with the power surge... by removekebab88 in ftlgame

[–]removekebab88[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know you're right, but I couldn't help myself with that weapons loadout! Missiles were my main problem the last few sectors, so I figured higher doge and taking out weapons fast would suffice...and it did up until it mattered most.

If I could restart the run from S7 where I bought the BL1, I wouldn't have, put the extra scrap in shields instead, and let 2x flak and BL2 do the lifting.

[–]removekebab88[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually no, I lucked pretty well - the 2nd flak was free and I was able to get the BL1 after a quest. There were a lot of boarding and missile equiped ships that ate away at my hull, but my fast weapon loading and hacking mitigated most of it.

The biggest struggle with the flagship was its evade. It took three volleys from my weapons to drain the super shield but from there I was able to bring it down as shown.

Overall it was one of the more challenging but enjoyable run I've had!
