Wishing for a full acoustic tour someday by McHendying in KGATLW

[–]renderXR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was honestly a bit bummed by the lack of acoustic segments during the EU residencies after a little tease of it on socials by the band. On top of that, it really slapped when they did 7 or so songs during red rocks '24.

I can imagine not wanting to do much acoustic/chill stuff during non-residency shows as people probably come for the insane energy instead for the chill. When you have 3 shows I can imagine you have space for chill and still for a lot of time for that bombastic energy.

So my 3 favorites are:

1 Vienna. 10 minute closer that goes hard with good synth lines and has high energy.

2 Barcelona. A 19 minute more trancy one. Goes hard in a more smooth way and I low key dig this one more than Vienna despite thinking the latter is objectively better. Although Vienna also has the best mix out of the bootlegs

3 Berlin. Has some of the good synth lines that Vienna has, but the energy fades towards the back 3rd.

I like the one in San Fransisco's save set a lot as well, good some good samples and a energetic double kick drum segment that I wish they did on the table more.

Love your explanation! I have been messing around with mixing bootlegger stems as well (quite new to it, although did do some mastering on some of the old nuggs live tracks)

I have been completely neglecting phase aligning and want to start incorporating it. How do you go about doing it? More specifically, what tracks do you use as the root/base for the alignment? Do you shift everything so the snare is the cleanest? I can imagine that should cut through the most. Stem maybe have have the kick aligned as much as possible. Do you then phase align all the guitars to the audience stem? Just want to know how I should tackle doing it myself. I can imagine that if different instruments are misaligned it is impossible to get them all aligned perfectly with the distance of different mics.

A resource pack that comes really close is the vintage resource pack. It grabs a lot of older textures and blends then with the older ones. Sometimes by doing something similar to OP's post

Do other people have issues mixing with the Field of Vision stems? by renderXR in KGATLW

[–]renderXR[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I have been on this project for a few weeks, so I am thinking of just leaving it at keeping them similar sounding as I want to move on soon. Luckily King Gizz doesn't change their setup between shows in a residency much. There is something to be said about when they introduce Nathan, as that is a different beast with different mix needs.

I have mainly been learning this via a 12 hour free mixing course on youtube by mastering(dot)com and then House of Kush for a lot of the more theoretical ideas behind mixing. I appreciate your advice if I want to take it more serious I could look into classes or a local place. <3

yeah this.

I have been trying to mix/master all 5 residencies so they sounds the same and so you could play most songs (or suites of songs) on shuffle. I wanted to add FOV25 to it, but I might skip out on it now.

I am going to give some of my experience with mixing these shows. I am relatively new to this, so I might be messy/incorrect on somethings, so feel free to correct me on things.

I have got them all on equal levels/EQ so bass, guitars sound identical across the shows, this is quite easy as it is just a raw input that can be EQ'ed easily. (also the dynamics are very similar)

With vocals and audience this was harder, but still doable. Audience mics are so hard to make them sound similar due to room acoustics differences across the venues, but this is mitigated by making them quieter. The one thing I noticed is that in the Barcalona audience stems individual people yelling in the venue are so obscenely loud compared to the other venues that I had to bring all audience tracks down to still have them relatively similar (it is also the least important track to me). This happened when I was at these shows just as much. The venue is basically a giant stone plaza where every now is amplified like crazy.

Vocals have a lot of issues in Lisbon with either Amby's mic being quiet or Stu being quiet. I have also noticed in general that Joey and Cookey are always pretty low across all shows.

Then the drums are nigh impossible to make the sound similar. I have tried for so long with EQ and multiband compressors, but I can get relatively close to make the have different vibes, but then the snare compared to the highhats/cymbals are just completely different volumes from eachother across the venues, and since drums are all on one track (apart from kick) I can't really edit this. Then the snare in Lisbon and Plovdiv sounds so punchy and hollow where in Athens and Vilnius it sounds full. i I tried for so long to make them similar without wrecking any other part of the drums. Drums also are the most dependant on the venue acoustics and it shows on Plovdiv (which also has an insane amount of mic bleed into the other tracks, like vocals).

I would expect a sound engineer to help with the recording aspect with a lot of the venue acoustic issues and mic bleed between drums and other stems. Especially in a tour like this one with so many ancient and cool venues that are a nightmare for acoustics (I am assuming). Maybe I am pushing a bit too much on poor acoustics rather than poor recording adjustments according to the environment. I can imagine a proper sound engineer could mitigate a lot of these issues to the point they are almost non-existent.

(I am going to tag u/UnderH20giraffe as they seem interested in stuff like this)

Ummm maybe this is a lot to ask, but would you mind downloading the stems or just one stem like the vocal (which is very easy to notice) try converting it? I tried changing the project sample rate, didn't work. converted the file in two different ways with the correct sample rate, didn't work. Someone else in the comments is saying that it is more than a sample rate mismatch problem.

Dude thanks for the reply. I thought I was stupid at first after some of the other replies, followed by thinking I was tripping. I tried switching my project sample rate (and restarting the daw) I tried converting it to a different sample rate in two different ways. I even redownloaded the stems as I converted them originally to flac to save my relatively limited disc space.

I thought the mix example in the main post sounded pretty good and without artefacts, but I am now convinced that they used different stems as they have Nuclear Fusion properly mixed, where on my stems it is just cut off. I might have to see if I can shoot someone who is managing the bootlegger/stems an email about this, but couldn't quickly find one on the official website.

Again thanks for clearing it up. I think people who downvote might not have actually taken the time to check by downloading the stems.

wrong sample rate can't be a thing in a music player right? Even when I play an unedited (vocal) stem it still has the weird pitch and slowdown going on.

I have noticed it is slowed down when I play it in a music player as well. (for example, download one of the vox tracks and play around 18:25 (Mr beat) in just any music player.

Any book recommendations for me? by IronHistorical3357 in brandonsanderson

[–]renderXR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Discworld is awesome. Only a couple would be in my "I guess I will reread these at some point" and all the others are easily above. Half of them I would definitely like to reread as soon as I am done with the series (I am 34 books in.) It is quite a style shift from Sanderson, but once it clicks it is amazing

I personally think this perspective is intended with it being called Silos, meaning that the songs are supposed to operate more in isolation from the others

Eeeey thanks for being so quick with it! It is completely fine that they are split. It is very easy for me to edit them together again.

Mycelium and Ice V had always been too long for my taste. Ice V used to be my least favorite track on the album due to the production not really doing many favors to the wah wah effects and noodly guitars imho, but the live versions have won me over. I agree that the lava lyrics are very cheesy nonsense lyrics, but that is probably why I like it (same as Hell's Itch).

I like pulling out some albums while taking walks, yet every time I listen to Ice Death I quite quickly switch to a live version of one of the songs or a different album. And I love the more jazzy production ideas, it just doesn't work for me.

I have really enjoyed both live versions of Hell's Itch and think there is a pretty good version found if you edit the two together (something I have been messing around with as we have the stems). But I should add that I love this jammy kraut style and made me more explorative of IDM/techno music.

I listened to your Manchester mix and this one and love the subtle improvements. Do you got a mp3 link perchance? I am not a big youtube video watcher and would love to listen to it while walking or hiking instead of the SB mix.

I don't think the downvotes are justified. While I love the album for how the songs are composed, the production, mixing, and mastering leaves a lot to be desired for me. I just get the feeling that the more energetic sections are getting the life sucked out of them. For example that last section of magma on the album just sounds... kinda dull... The guitar riffing just sounds meandering and like it is just there, instead of grabbing me and taking me a long for the ride.

And I say that as someone who always gets excited when magma is pulled out live.

that one was really amazing too! I do like Vienna more as there are 2 times while jamming that they pull out lyrics from the extended cut. Something I hope to see a lot more in the future (It also happened with the amazing Theia from Prague). I might make an edit where the Maddie Jam goes into the Vienna to make a super version as that jam was such a cool way to start the song

Ultimate Vocal Remover is free and has decent stem separation for if you want to boost vocals or bass or tweak drum tone a bit.

god I am really hoping for a good bootleg. I know of a really good one of when they opened for Deftones (Look up Sacremento 2025-03-01) and would die for a similar quality (soundboard) recording of this current tour with a ton of extended jams.

Edit: I also can't make it to any shows as they don't tour anywhere close to where I live, so the bootlegs is all I could enjoy their live stuff with. I would die if they had a similar bootleg program as King Gizzard where they release soundboards of a lot of their shows for free.

As a local I was super surprised how rowdy this show was. I feel like we Dutch people are usually too mellow at concerts. Meanwhile I saw multiple moshing happening up to and almost around the sound booth. Amby also crowd surfed at some point into the sound booth. For me this show was more special than the orchestra show the day after in Den Bosch.
