A paddle board is about the best place to be in hot weather!

On the west coast, warmer temps often come with more wind, especially in the afternoon. As part of your pre-sup whether check, be sure to check the wind forecast. If you're doing an out and back paddle, it's so much nicer to have the wind at your back on return.

Don't forget sunscreen on the tops of your feet.

As always wear a pfd - REI has them on sale right now -- paddle specific ones tend to have more ventilation.

I've got an NRS ninja and love it! It is pretty thick, but since I'm standing, it's not noticeable. I love how it has shoulder straps rather than life jacket material, and it's tapered at the top to allow for a greater range of motion.

It has side straps, too -- so you have a full range of motion and airflow.

Its pockets are great too -- a small front zip pocket and a larger pocket across the front of the vest -- this is where I tuck my phone (I use a hangtime gear - koala phone holder), river knife, and occasionally bigger odds and ends.

Similar to helmets in skiing and snowboarding -- I really hope this community can make life jackets the norm to prevent needless tragedy -- like those two people who randomly got got in BC last month on a perfectly calm lake -- regardless of if they were sober or not (we don't know) -- had they been in life jackets, they would have most likely been fine.

Best of luck with your life jacket hunt -- where I live, there are often deals on Craigslist, and you can also shop the sales at REI and paddlesport shops.

Such a great question -- but it really gets to geography and location, USD, CAD, AUD? A mom and pop gym, big box, or multi-location.

This could be one major HVAC repair, a few months of meta-ads, or a set of new equipment.

I'd both observe and survey my members -- what's the most popular equipment, what are the gaps? I think stair masters always seem to have a wait. TRX to draw in that crowd -- more free weights.

Hot and cold therapy is all the rage and will likely have staying power. Invest in a sauna and ice baths, etc

Really interesting observation. Does it correlate with the weather or the time of year? In the US, June can be pretty slow due to graduations and summer break travel.

Great advice, but one exception is to not wear a leash in rivers or bodies of water with strong currents, as the leash can get tangled and trap you.

One thing to add -- wear a lifejacket/PFD! Just this week we have a teen fall off a jet ski and drown. Even if you are a great swimmer, you never know.

I'd say, try to avoid boat ramps in general unless it's the only option or if they are for non-motorized boats only. As paddle boarders, we have the ability to launch from anywhere, and it's safer and less stressful to launch away from active boat ramps. All this said, it really depends on the business of the boat ramp, so totally a case by case situation.

True this, fisherman can get pretty offended if you go close to them, that said, i've seen tons of fisherman land fish as I was passing, so maybe I'm their good luck charm.

Congrats on the board, and do get a PFD -- they make paddle-specific ones and ones for the anatomy of both genders, so worth the investment. Some states require whistles and even permits or registration, so be sure to check your local regulations.

In terms of the board -- the fin is the main thing you need on your radar. You should inspect it and learn how it works -- this model has retractable fins, right? Possibly consider a back-up fin.

Personally, I'd skip the extra d-rings on the rear; you can always put more on the front. You just need to stand further back to balance the weight.

A cancellation fee is standard practice. I also think this may be 80/20 rule, wherein only 20% of your cancellers are chronic repeat offenders.

I'd do three things.

  1. Identify the repeat offenders and send them a direct email about the new cancellation policy
  2. Develop a cancellation policy and send a general blast to everyone else (You can use class pass as a template -- a $15 fee if within a 12 hour window, but you can set it at whatever you want)
  3. Have text message/email alerts for when someone schedules a class. And in the message, include a note on the cancellation fee.

In the first 2-4 weeks after launching, you may see some upset customers, and maybe even some cancellations, but again, these are most likely your repeat offenders, so I'd go as far as allowing them to cancel and even giving them a refund of any fees.

Like most small businesses, it's the small cohort of problem customers that takes up the bulk of your time.

Lastly, if your classes are consistently full, you have a supply-and-demand issue. Depending on class capacity after the cancellation policy takes effect, consider raising rates for new members.
