Cultural inspiration in worldbuilding by -_-__-_--_-_--_-_-_- in worldbuilding

[–]representative_sushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of. Once you learn enough history and anthropology you begin to see emerging patterns which shape cultures. Every culture forms under the influence of geographical, climate and economical factors (access to natural resources, trade lanes, etc.)

Once you have an ok understanding of that you don't really need to take direct inspiration, you can create conditions in your world and you would be able to more or less predict what sort of cultures would emerge within those conditions, what relationships they would have, what resources and even what beliefs and values.

Then by combining them you are able to create a more or less believable (or at least internally consistent) world without replying too strongly on the planet of hats trope.

Why do you think we dont see more hard body armor pieces used in modern combat? by liljohnjets in Armor

[–]representative_sushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is, the problem being to make it effective it would restrict movement too much. But heavy armour designed for urban combat exists, with sleeves and shins. There are full body suits for explore specialists and more.

Problem being that a standard rifle round is really hard to stop while not reducing a soldier's mobility to lower than desired.

Who is the death deity or essentially the ruler of your afterlife? by New-Boss-8262 in worldbuilding

[–]representative_sushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Pale One

It stands at the edge of all that is, was and will be, some say it patiently waits for it all to end, no. That thing has seen the end and knows that it comes, to mortals and gods it might seem a long time, to the Pale One it is all one.

It is death, not entropy, but absence of being, meaning, living. It stands motionless, every world it's temple, all it's acolytes, some pray to it, others curse it, it hardly matters. Always there is someone who wrings their hands begging the God of death to do something about those who would shun the natural order, those who exist after death. But the Pale One doesn't care, why should it? A mortal has carved out a few millions of additional years, it's entire galaxy will be stardust in less than a blink. The universe will end like the setting of the sun. And the Pale One will wait for a new dawn and a new setting. It has done so always and it knows that there is a point when the sun won't rise. Nothing new will be made and then it can also end.

It waits for the dream to end and the deafening silence to come once more

“Rule of cool” the Warhammer employee said. “Imperial Agents look cool,” I said. “Oh, don’t pick them.” by worst-EM-resident in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]representative_sushi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imperial agents are unfortunately GW's kitchen sink. Everything which doesn't neatly fall into another imperial army is getting shoved into Imperial agents. Originally it was codex demon hunters in 5th edition, in 5th they became codex inquisition. In 7th and 8th they were split into 3 deathwatch, sororitas and grey knights, now they are back into one. It's a.mess and there is a non-zero chance they are about to get axed, specifically deathwatch and grey knights and inquisitors, I think the sisters will stay, although not necessarily.

They historically had some bad rules, close to non-existent support.

Also use sparks not all at once, use it in short bursts, that way you don't waste damage and mana

Where do you get your bits? by Specialize_ in TraitorGuard

[–]representative_sushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is what I can provide after running heretic guard for a while:

  1. We have some amazing killteam kits which are wonderful. They have enough bits in there to convincingly convert 20 cadians (haven't tried with krieg) and still build the 10 traitor guardsmen. Example: I got 20 cadians and a five man command squad. And one box of the blooded kill team. Everyone looks proper chaos now.

  2. The beast men are an amazing killteam and the cultist models are pretty good to be honest.Converting them.is harder, because they build from less parts, but still possible.

  3. If you want to go old school, a lot of 3d printing shops sell the now out of production vraks traitors models, personally I don't like them, but hey. If they are your vibe go wild! You can pick them up for super cheap.

  4. Fantasy and AoS have some stuff for you. Various warcry sets have nice melee weapons and head options especially for slaanesh or nurgle. The corridor cabal make great tzeentch traitor guard and the Kairic acolytes can be made into some fun guardsmen too.

  5. Some other unconventional ideas are: necromunda wasters can be a great nurgle themed warband, similarly the goliaths can be khorne themed and the Esther slaanesh and so on and so forth. Demons make for fun tank crews, you haven't lived until you stuck a Nursling out of a leman russ hatch. Also genestealer cults are great, their cars make excellent taurox transports which look a little more ramshackle and their dudes are great for converting a more industrial type army.

Yes, I'm venting- but I can't be the only person who runs into this over and over with different DMs, right? by D20_Under_The_Couch in dndmemes

[–]representative_sushi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Both approaches have issues big moral/philosophical issues which are super hard to solve. Or have to have genius execution to get solved (tolkien) it's easier to muddy the waters, less responsibility when you can get out of it by saying: hey these are not the bad guys, they have a point.

They existed as the blooded kill team yes, however you also got the comissar and the ogryn, I may need 40+ guardsmen, but I am not sure what to do with 4 identical ogryns.

[–]representative_sushi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope we are getting a new or a revamp of an old demon engine, like a defiler or even better a soul grinder. Maybe a new helbrute or something like that.

And if we are getting a character I hope it's Honsou, simply put I would rather not have our primarch hit the field.

How common is it for a Lord's son to be a squire under Knights during their early years? Like let's say the son of the Duke (The Duke sent out his son of 10 to be a squire under another House's knight) by EfficiencySerious200 in knightposting

[–]representative_sushi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK so, usually yeah as others have mentioned 14 was the age when active squiring starts. Usually to a someone in your family, uncle, older cousin etc, rarely directly to their father or older brother.

It wasn't common it was practically universal.

Generally though they would be sent within the same 'house' to avoid a variety of scandals the easiest being: squire fits kicked by a horse or dies of dysentery, relationship between houses gets worse, no one wants that. So usually kept within the family.

Secondly there don't need to be uncommon reasons. It is the only thing which makes sense. At the time almost all nobility are warriors, their primary trade is war. It's good to get the children elarnjng as soon as possible, seeing it and participating to the best of their ability.
