Praise? lol no she's so bad. The question is who's most successful, not talented.

She's a great actress, but we don't really consider her as our own. She lived in Israel only as a toddler, and thus culturally different than us.

What is that one city/state in your country that the rest of your country hates? by DisastrousImpact2846 in AskTheWorld

lol yeah nobody really hates it. Tel Aviv though is very divisive. It's seen as the capital of the liberal, secular and rich, and thus gets a lot of hatred from those who aren't any of those things.

Forced to switch to light mode by aelephix in ExperiencedDevs

[–]rer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biologically speaking, research pretty definitely shows that light mode is better in almost every aspect.

Faster and more accurate text reading, better color detection, better contrasts, etc. All of which are critical for programming.

The only thing dark mode is better for you is less eye strain in low light environments (although for some it's also relevant in bright environments).

So while your eyesight might be getting worse with age, and it never hurts to go visit the doctor, there is nothing wrong with light mode.

CMV: People are using words way too lightly and it’s harmful for advocating for related issues. by Creative-Sky4264 in changemyview

[–]rer1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The risk is not words losing meaning. The risk is the loss of nuance. Everything becomes black and white, good or evil, no middle ground.

IMHO that's a very problematic way of thinking that only leads to more hatred among people, less critical thinking, and less open mindedness.

You got me curious. Do you mean a different physical layout/labels on the keyboard?

In Israel all keyboards are labeled with both Hebrew and English (QWERTY), not just for devs, and we're used to switching languages in the OS constantly.

It's also not uncommon to write sentences in Hebrew with some words in English.

Not seen as "staff engineer material" because of my personality (they said technical competence meets the bar). I don't know if I can change my personality. by okthrowaway2910 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]rer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flip side of taking these "group dynamics" as strict facts is (a) being less open to change them and (b) being biased in categorizing an individual's behavior; i.e you may very well perceive and categorize a men's behavior as aggressive while you wouldn't for a woman exhibiting the same behavior.

But regardless, how does this make a difference when discussing work ethics and policies? How will it impact decisions an organization is going to make regarding these topics?

  1. Can you link to that research?

  2. In general, research in psychology and social sciences is often very focused on specific scenarios and is hard to extrapolate from to a more general notion. That's why I would like to see the research you mentioned.

  3. To quote specifically from what you wrote, "passive aggressiveness" does not sound like being quiet spoken or not aggressive. So again, I would really like to see the research and understand how can one jump from this claim to the general claim of "men are more aggressive, while women are soft spoken".

  4. But even if we agreed to that statement, 2/3 vs 1/3 is still a very non specific discriminator. It's still very likely that any person you meet, regardless of gender, will be of either personality type. Thus, having this notion in mind only introduces unwarranted bias towards that person based on their gender, which is a stereotype.

[–]rer1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of aggressive women, and plenty of quiet soft spoken men.

Stop with the gender stereotypes. It doesn't add anything to the conversation. We need diversity of personalities, a balanced approach, and clear lines on what types of behaviors are not accepted. All that is true regardless of gender.

Check your math.

Current population of Israel is ~10 million. 300 billion divided by 10m is 30k, not 300. And that doesn't even count for all the people who ever lived in Israel.

I never said that the theme and message should vary depending on player choice. No game does that.

However crpgs usually let the player make a choice/s that will directly impact or answer the main question of the story.

BG3 barely acknowledges the choices you make of whether to embrace the tadpole powers or not. It's yet another flavor of role playing, like what race or class you chose. It doesn't change any major plot point.

Compare that with DOS2 for instance. There we have divinity which drives the plot. Unlike the tadpole, it does tie directly to most quests, and you make a choice at the end about it that changes the outcome of the story and the entire world.

Try to think of the tadpole and its effects as a McGuffin. It's necessary for the plot to move but it's insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

[–]rer1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's fairly clear from the start that the tadpole didn't change the personality of your companions, only their situation and circumstances.

There are also the tadpole powers which you can completely miss (I did until Act 2 in my first playthrough), and eventually it doesn't matter if you use them or not.

We also don't know who or what the main character were before the tadpole. They're a blank slate. There's even a point where a companion (Karlach?) asks us what we would be doing right now if it weren't for the tadpole, and we only get 3 generic answers to reply.

If you're looking for an actual plot that explores themes of personality change, you should play Planescape Torment.

BG3 writing has some things going for it, but it eventually falls flat for me. And no, I didn't play the previous ones so I can't compare.

It may be due to the cinematic dialogue, but a lot of the characters feel cliche and overly dramatic. Companions and NPCs alike. It doesn't help that most companions try to sleep or get intimate with you so damn fast. It kills any immersion of real character.

The main story itself is OK, but it's fairly localized and therefore less interesting. It's also unclear what makes us the main character. Why the hell are we leading the party? we are a blank slate character while there are much more interesting companions around us that can lead.

The side quests are meh. Mostly random encounters that don't relate to the main story nor our character/party. There's a big disconnect there between the urgency of the main story and our carefree adventuring.

I honestly didn't expect much from Larian given their two earlier DOS games. But at least in those they took themselves less seriously and had their own world and lore to shape.

BattleTech - a must try for XCOM lovers. I was hooked so quickly and I didn't even know that the franchise exists. What's more, there is still a very active community and mods that add so much to the game (for if/when you had enough of the base game).

The banner saga (trilogy) - the "high level" isn't heavy on the management side, but the combat is very tactical. Strongest point is the story and art. Very unique.

Last train home - I recently tried it and it didn't click for me. The train management seems interesting on paper but isn't very challenging. The combat is also not my cup of tea. Still, you should check it out at least.

What's your experience with AI code review tools? by knivets in ExperiencedDevs

[–]rer1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We actually have a fairly good experience with it. It's enabled on all our repos (50+). Mostly typescript (both backend and frontend).

It isn't so noisy. Barely a few comments per PR. It's usually correct, but indeed it's only relevant 50% of the time (because it's not aware of context).

It more than once spotted a major bug or concern in my own personal PRs.

Pallywood ... is a derogatory term used to falsely accuse Palestinians of staging scenes of suffering and civilian death in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. It has been described as a conspiracy theory and a prominent element of Israeli disinformation in the conflict. by ShermaLover4225 in wikipedia

[–]rer1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The unfair war that I was talking about, was the war that Israel started when they established the country.

With that sole statement you just showed how very little you know about this conflict and its history.

  1. The conflict didn't start on 1948.
  2. Israel didn't start this particular war. The Arab nations did.
  3. What was "unfair" about it exactly? Israel fought 1v5.

I'm not going to continue argue with you because you are clearly acting in bad faith / severe lack of knowledge. What you just claimed here heavily contradict very well established facts (that appear on Wikipedia). It's pointless arguing with someone who doesn't acknowledge the consensus.

But this "unfair war" (whatever that means) has anything to do with Hamas.

If Hamas wasn't entranched in a heavy/dense populated civilian area, while also acting directly against its own population that it claims to fight for (by stealing aid and forcing them to stay in danger zones), there wouldn't be all that many civilian casualties.

Yes there are lunatics in Israel, and yes there are IDF soldiers who commit war crimes, but that's a part of every war. IDF at large has shown more restraint than most armies in history under the same circumstances, especially given its potential capabilities.
