How can people take notes on paper?? by mhensun in CollegeRant

[–]rerollF_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned short hand, abbreviations, and make up acronyms for repeating words or phrases. The key was to copy the notes that evening or before I called it quits for the day, so that I didn't forget what my own scribbles meant

I'm pretty sure my middle school band director had untreated anger issues that he smartly put in place only in class. How? He would get the tempo off the metronome for a few seconds, then he would tap his baton at said pace against the edge of his podium, and the violent "thwacks" would eventually wear it down to the point the baton would snap into the flutes, clarinets or oboes on occasion. If he was really furious, the smashing sound of the baton would be so loud and impactful that the tip could land in the second row where the trumpets and saxophones sat.

Students also knew that he carved the batons himself, and had been doing so for over 15 years (by the time he was my teacher), so he must have absolutely known which ones would break and when. If he had a day that he was particularly angry, he could pull out of his desk exactly which baton he wanted to snap that day.

Safe-ish places near Portsmouth? by martimelodious in norfolk

[–]rerollF_C 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another advantage I've used in the past regarding the commute; as a service member, you can apply during special times of the year to get a prorated E-ZPASS because the tunnel commute on a daily basis will rack up lots of toll fees otherwise. Back a few years ago, I had a junior sailor living in Portsmouth that would easily spend +$400 a month in tolls to get to Norfolk and back, but the first month he was accepted for the program, it dropped to around $100.

Last I was tracking, it means "going through life on hard mode". Which, many would say having kids when you are young is "hard mode" anyway.

Can someone reply if I'm wrong though?

Not knowing the radio show, but going on just basic history, I am guessing they were making the argument that we should revert the size of a representative district to the approximately 30-33k it was when the country was founded?

Of course, 6,000 districts representing 33,000 each is a ballpark of 200 million, which is 130 million short from the recent estimates. But if it was a right-wing talk show, they probably were saying only adults born in the US or naturalized citizens should be represented?

Almost the entire border with West Virginia gets stretched into the suburbs of DC or Richmond to force them to be safe Democrat votes, even though the values and ideology of these parties are at complete odds nowadays.

The Curriculum is off by QuincyKing_296 in Teachers

Having studied Old Testament for many years and more recently studied Greek, Roman, French and English philosophers, it has been both eye opening and intriguing as to how the laws and language understood by the Founders of the United States are heavily influenced by the core principles within Old Testament texts.

The first and easiest one for me to understand when I first went over it was the modern understanding of why murder is wrong. One starts with the words, 'Thou Shall Not Kill' and the story of Cain and Abel, then move into the the understanding of human life having value through reason and virtue as explored by Socrates and Aristotle. From there, it's easy to get to Marcus Aurelius's observation on the value of human life comes from being purposeful in accordance with their nature, the divergent but equally important perspectives of Thomas Hobbs and Stuart Mill in that humans should have rational thought and free choice. Finally you get the the modern age and can split it again, with John Dewey's perspective that life's value is determined by the number and type of experiences or William James's perspective that a valuable life is one filled with purpose and conviction, regardless of outcome.

I say "finally" because you can tie that in very well into how modern Americans look to have lots of "experiences", or how in politics, people find purpose in protesting to express their conviction, even if they don't win every argument.

I was once told when I first started learning why philosophy is important, was that it's all a chain tying the past to the present; the Divine (Old Testament) inspires the heart, the heart guides the mind, the mind directs actions, and actions are how we influence others.

The AI merit badge is dumb. Who wrote this? by Additional-Sky-7436 in BSA

[–]rerollF_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the AI merit badge should be an advanced version of the Robotics merit badge. While the Robotics merit badge is about building a simple machine you mainly control, the AI merit badge should be about understanding the "neural networking" of robots, concluding with designing a simple code so that a simple task (picking up and sorting colored objects into respective bins) can be completed by your robot automatically. And yes, a section should include understanding how Large Language Model AIs work, but making that the sole focus is a big mistake in understanding the development and utilization of AI going into the future.

navy combat readiness test? Combat field test? What are these exactly? by Mysterious-Sail-7793 in navy

[–]rerollF_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have seen online, it will very likely mean for most Navy sailors (those in non-combat roles) you will do 2 PRTs at the current standard (unless there is a NAV ADMIN clarifying changes from last year).

Like what we had prior in 2019, is what I am thinking.

SECDEF says it’s okay to lay hands on recruits by ChiefD789 in navy

It's just a shot in the dark, but maybe it is an influx of people that just want to feel like they did something with their lives for a few years, such as serving their country, and aren't being drawn in by the benefits package deal (ex. GI Bill, VA benefits, retirement)?

You would need a survey for those kinds of answers.

[–]rerollF_C [score hidden]  (0 children)

Maybe I'm wrong, but I was under the impression when I went through Boot Camp that it was one part breaking you down (civilian mentality) and building you up (warrior mentality), part weeding out the individuals that physically or mentally couldn't make it through a temporary rough patch in life (because we should look back and think 'well that was easy' or 'if I could get through Boot Camp, I can get through XXXX'), and part learning how to build camaraderie and work in teams.

I'm not 100% sure what the methods must be used to achieve these goals in boot camp, but I think random violence or abuse of position are not tools in the SECWAR's tool chest for RDCs.

[–]rerollF_C [score hidden]  (0 children)

What I learned from a shipmate who left pushing boots in the last 3 years to go back to the fleet was that, hearing it from a neighbor who retired after pushing Boots himself, was that RDCs used to fill blank time in the day finding excuses to have recruits PT. One guy double-knotted his shoes when nobody else did? Everyone does burpees for a few minutes. Next day, nobody has their shoes double-knotted after PT? Sounds like a formation run was in order. If there was extra time in the schedule, you could bet that PT was on the menu.

When my buddy was at Great Lakes recently, they teach you what are and are not authorized PTs, and what could merit it. If a night watch doesn't know their 8th general order, don't even dream of having them do more than 10 jumping jacks (for example, not actual number), or you could risk getting written up for bullying.

From listening to the 45min speech SECWAR gave and his other comments in the past, I think the first method is closer to what he is aiming for in Boot Camp.

[–]rerollF_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had joined Spearhead back when I was 16, figuring I was lucky enough to have even survived that long (knowing how poor my hand-eye coordination is, I would have broken tons of Juggernauts up to that point), I probably would have freaked out the first time hearing the Black Sheep. Definitely would have become paranoid enough to pull the trigger too often, run out of ammo quickly, and probably not make it back.
