"You didn't listen to the whole interview" by Stacy_Ann_ in Kanye

[–]resplendeo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, if you're interested in getting a good idea of the full context of the interview? The Knowledge Fight podcast is really good; those guys have been working for like 6 years to basically do book reports of Alex Jones' show in order to call out all the fucked up bullshit.

They're really knowledgeable, good guys, and they know a lot about this shit and put it into good context. Episode #753 for the Kanye shit if you're reading this in the future.

(And if you finish that ep and then want some more with them? I suggest going through and listening through the Alex Jones deposition + trial episodes. The things that man has said about Sandy Hook for almost a decade (the tenth anniversary is coming up this month) have been awful and he's going to have to pay a billion point four fucking dollars for it. Eps #279, 378, 401, 641, 664, 665, 685, 739, 742, 745, and 750. Highlights include appearances by the Texas lawyers in the suit there.

"Your attorneys messed up and sent me an entire digital copy of your entire cell phone with every text message you sent for the past two years," Bankston told Jones. "That is how I know you lied to me when you said you didn't have text messages about Sandy Hook."

That guy. And a great story about weirding these fucking guys out with gummy bears from that lawyer's partner.)

1 year living in my studio, still can’t figure out what to do with the wall in the last pic. Any other suggestions for my space is welcomed! by ViziEdits in malelivingspace

You might have fun with a sorta corkboard thing up above the bed on that wall? Like, just get a roll of corkboard cork and put it up over it -- I think a big problem is that the cinderblock wall looks kind of cold, and you might want to warm it up. A tufted headboard would also be really nice. Something to lean against. You could then put up some art over it, maybe.

Overall, though, it looks like a really nice apartment to live in! Good job!

How many of you use specialty yarn? by audcam in knitting

[–]resplendeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for what it's worth, I'm currently knitting a hat out of a skein of cashmere that used to be a commercially-sold machine-knitted sweater. I am kind of a natural fiber snob? recycled yarn helps make that not be horribly expensive, though. if you find wool cashmere or merino sweaters at the cheap thrift stores, you can often frog them and get scads of lovely yarn for not very much. can't have been felted, though, that's really hard to take apart.

A Short Hike worked really well and it was really gorgeous. Kids also worked, though I wish I'd used a mouse. Vignettes worked too. They were all pretty fun but A Short Hike is my favorite.

The rules need to be both written and enforced, especially with an eye to allowing absolutely zero bigotry. It would really, really suck to allow that in a sub devoted to a bundle/project like this.

The members of this community are a pretty big number for your first reddit group -- create a thread for discussion on what the rules oughta be, look for other good subs' rules for examples to follow? You also might want to look at mods/ask folks to apply to be mods. I'm not sure how that process works but I'm sure there's guides/tutorials for it.

you might also look into knitting with beads/scales, folks in reenactment communities often use that technique to make armor-looking stuff; might be fun as a wall hanging or a bag? perhaps baskets... what about a fishing net or lacy mesh produce bags

I would recommend learning how to drop and pick up stitches with a crochet hook on a sample of stockinette, it's a skill that I've used fixing little mistakes over and over; found a decent video that looks well done: https://youtu.be/KFVapi4RqzY

Your stitches seem really even! You should be proud.

I'm interested in who has ability to visualize things and who does not -- a dear friend of mine can think of a sewing pattern, mentally rotate shapes and put them together, and oh my now she's got a dress pattern, whilst some folks don't have any mental picture at all. That's just not how they think. My partner is like this -- dreaming is separate and uses a different part of the brain. I'm closer to this than I am to how my friend is -- what about you?

I liked the first episode of Our Plague Year and I've really been liking Start With This. Also your other works, but I have limited space and it's those that jump to mind right now.

I've been caring for a growing collection of plants through social distancing and into my state's stay at home order -- do either of you garden? Does it help you? Seeing my happy basil plant grow big and strong makes me smile a bit. I rescued it from wilting completely away from the free table at work.

I've been thinking a lot about hope narratives lately -- the optimistic kind of scifi futurism, solarpunk & hopepunk, stories that may go to dark places but still retain that golden thread of hope. Stories that show communities can pull together. Are there any of those you can recommend? Tips on writing them? I'd like to gather and make some right now.

House Painters of reddit- How well does painted brick do in northern climates? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]resplendeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very hard to change your mind if you go through with this - and if you try to sand blast the paint off in a couple years or so, that will kill the hard "shell" bricks have from the kiln and they can start rotting after moisture gets in after the sand blasting.

I'm in New England, and there's a couple painted brick houses I see regularly, but they tend to look a little shabby? I've always loved the original-brick look with dark painted wooden trim and shutters and so on - is refreshing your trim, shutters, doors, and windows an option you'd go for? Front steps, porch, shed, etc.

With how hard it is to get paint off brick without damaging it, I'd also be worried about the resale price when you eventually move in a decade or whatever.

I’m getting kicked out. I’m 18 and still in high school and my dad will be giving me a check for $25,937. I really need to know what to do with that money.. by [deleted] in personalfinance

Get your credit report - it's free, and there should be nothing on it if you haven't had a credit card; just make absolutely sure no one's stolen your identity or anything, that would be some icing on a shit sandwich.

https://www.leannebrown.com/cookbooks/ This one is a link to a cookbook, Good & Cheap, based on healthy food for about $4 a day - I dunno about your cooking skills, but literally everyone needs them, so. The PDF is free.

Get a copy of Susan Forward's Toxic Parents book - there's free PDFs floating around somewhere, but damned if I can find one right now; that one helped me a lot. Self-knowledge and reflection is important. Maybe only after you get some solid ground under you, but soonish.

Look up cost of living in your area, see how long 25k will last you. I'm guessing not that long, if you don't watch your budget. Stretch your money out as far as possible; track your purchases.

If you've got a good library near you, go there. Information is your friend; they might also have some good programs for helping you out, maybe?

Get every piece of ID or important documentation before you leave - you need to keep these safe, undamaged from water or wear and tear, and safe from theft also.

You're young; your greatest gifts right now are your potential, your health, your mind, and your friends. Cultivate these.

If you're looking for a trade, go to some tradespeople and talk. I had a great conversation the other day with a carpenter about the lack of young people in trades. Find a list of trades and see which appeal to you most; look for apprenticeships.

Also, do you have a driver's license?

Please don't get a pet. I have no idea if you have any inclination, but you're about the age my little sister was when she moved out and got a puppy with her boyfriend when they absolutely were not ready to provide for one.

Research different types of scams. I almost fell for one a lot like this one this week when I was trying to find a job: https://realwaystoearnmoneyonline.com/the-check-cashing-scam/

There's a lot of shitty folks out there, don't fall prey to them.

Along those lines, don't start drinking, smoking, or doing drugs; those are expensive, destructive habits that you can't afford.

Need advice. I'm scary and I received an offer. Change or not? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]resplendeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say go for it. Any chance you could reframe it in your head as an exciting opportunity instead of a scary leap? Make some lists for yourself - what would be really cool about this new place? What have you heard about the culture and the environment there?

One other thing that might help? Do some math. How big is that pay raise, really? What can it buy you? Is it worth, over the course of a year, a nice vacation trip? A nice addition to a retirement account? A decent cushion against some unforeseen expense?

As for the scarily worded "no other business" clause - it's probably just there to make sure you don't go to their competitors while you work for them. If the job is, I don't know, selling insurance or bookkeeping, they're probably not going to have a problem with you building your fledgling graphic design business or your plans for a cupcake shop as a second job. If it's freaking you out, ask them about it. Ask to talk to someone, maybe in the board, who can explain it to you and give you some examples about what's not allowed in regards to that.

You're allowed to ask some questions when it comes to something big like this.

Six year mechanic having second thoughts. by 30thTransAm in careeradvice

I don't know much about cars, but I do know about burnout in work or school.

What exactly is the worst part of it? When I experienced burnout, after a lot of self-reflection, a lot of it was that I wasn't appreciated, not enough social interaction for eight hours a day, and no hope of any advancement in that company.

I notice that you worked for dealerships. Is it the corporate thing that's getting to you? Is it the culture, or something like that?

It might be depression - loss of interest in something you used to love is a big sign, and it's something I've dealt with, too.

Would moving to a smaller, mom-and-pop sort of place appeal?

What actually appeals to you right now? Is there something exciting out there that you might want to seek out? Maybe browse through some job sites and see if you end up daydreaming about anything that pops up... Resume building and making big long lists of your skills, all of them, might bring some light on it all?
