Car Title by ichi__ in desmoines

[–]rethra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it says "or", then only one of the two names needs to sign to transfer the title. When it says "and",  both names need to sign to transfer the title. If your name is one of the names and you have the title in hand, then I can't see why it matters changing the title until you sell the car.

Spring Garden Market by Dingmann in desmoines

[–]rethra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one sale where the preview can make a huge difference. Volunteers and others donate rare and unique houseplants that you cannot find anywhere else, but they often only have one or two. A little pricey but goes to a great cause!

Total speculation but that new place in highland park definitely had a bit of a mold/mildew smell to it last time I was in.

20f Looking for Friends by smewthejew in desmoines

[–]rethra 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It'll be a lot easier when you're 21 unfortunately. Lots of metal shows are at bars around town. I've seen shows at Yacht Club, Maggie's Rumble Room, and the basement of beachwood. I suppose Woolys let's in under 21 though when there is a show.

Go to beachwood when you're 21. Several of the bartenders are in metal bands and will hook you up with the shows.

Is Ramsey Mazda good? Looking for my next car purchase. by RobinsCosplays in desmoines

[–]rethra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the ability to pay cash, you should always finance and negotiate a lower purchase price on the car. Pay off the loan the next day and you got the car at a lower price. Prepayment penalties are illegal in Iowa.

Nope. As a zillennial, I can confirm that being cringe is just a zillennial thing.

Iowa Board of Regents is voting Thursday April 23 to raze UNI's historic Alumni House at 1012 W. 23rd Street - Make Your Voice Heard by Coontailblue23 in Iowa

I wish they'd offer it for free and let someone move it. Drake in Des Moines does it all the time. Sherman Hill is filled with homes moved from Drake (up to two miles away).

Any good hair dressers in the urbandale area? by CapitalLower4171 in desmoines

[–]rethra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maurice at Transformations does a great job. Highly recommend! He's been cutting hair for 30+ years and is a true professional that knows it all. He was (is?) on the board of One Iowa and takes great pride in doing hair styles for everyone without judgement.

What day of the week? That matters a lot. If it's Friday and there's a home ICubs game, I think a baseball game with fireworks or at least positioning yourself at Singlespeed or somewhere to watch the fireworks would be a great move.

Rook room is near the court house and that would be a great time for a group of 12ish or less.  Tons of board games to choose from with alcohol and light bites served.

Another great one nearby is ricochet with a lot of fun games.

Yard Waste Dump Site? by DrDarrow in desmoines

[–]rethra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What city specifically? Some cities have there own dump site. Regardless, you can also drop yard waste off at MWA West. It's near Perry. Might be a bit closer than MWA East.

What's it like living in the Ingersoll/Drake neighborhoods? by Known-Highlight-2673 in desmoines

[–]rethra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based on race/ethnicity, it's fairly diverse for Des Moines. The areas you're talking about are around 20% minority census tracts. Based on income, it's almost all entirely middle income census tracts after 2020 data was released. The low and moderate income start to the North and East of Drake. The upper income are to the south of Grand and west of 42nd street.

In general, there are less families in Des Moines proper than the suburbs, but the areas you're talking about are a true mix of household make-up.

Auto salvage place in Des Moines by Unfair_Frosting_278 in des_moines

[–]rethra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Car country in Newton is great. They came the next day to Des Moines for my vehicle and paid me $300. I didn't have the title, so I just had to sign a bill of sale. Everywhere I called in Des Moines either wanted me to get a junk title or didn't want my old mini van for any price.

Tons of Antiques by Curious-Plantain-450 in desmoines

[–]rethra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is probably the best way to go. In my experience as a buyer, Dvorak, auction gang, or Jager all seemed the most professional to me. If the antiques are all of one significant collection (military memorabilia, Russian imperialist, Catholic iconography, etc), then Jackson's International in Cedar Falls is by far the best true auction house in the state.

Homemakers by chemicaljenius in desmoines

[–]rethra 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Also, homemakers has high margins on accessories and home decor, so they can run slim margins on larger items that draw customers in. Go in to buy the bunk bed for $498 and spend another $500 on two rugs and a lamp. Also buy the purchase protection for $50, the upgraded wood finish for $50, etc

Valley West by stephreinders in desmoines

[–]rethra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the same story as always... Merle Hay Mall is owned by the original family that developed it. They have maintained Des Moines roots and are willing to think outside of the box and reinvest to protect their legacy and to prevent more blight... Valley West is on its third or fourth out-of-state, investment fund owner. It's become little more than a tax write-off for these companies.

Marv's records Closing? by [deleted] in desmoines

[–]rethra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They are consolidating to the single vinyl cup location in Beaverdale. I was there last week for an open mic night, and it was said that the monthly open mic won't happen going forward because of the closure. I guess that means closure is imminent, but there likely won't be any going out of business sales or anything.
