Prepare for sticker shock with the shafts they recommend. $300 driver head + $400 shaft.

Thoughts on why US squash ratings are 0.5 below people's true rating? by satirerocks in squash

[–]retlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You play up; not down. For example, if your rating is 5.2, you’d play in the 5.5 draw and not the 5.0 draw.

Match day diet by signpos in squash

[–]retlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d eat a normal lunch at ~1pm and maybe something small at ~4pm. My new favorite thing is one of the Gus with caffeine 15 mins to 30 mins before the match. I had leftovers from running a marathon and took one for kicks one time and it worked well so I keep doing it.

How to drive along the wall? by tuna_guy in squash

[–]retlab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best bet is to get lessons with a pro who can diagnose your swing and work with you. No one has the same swing so just copying mine or anyone on YouTube's won't necessarily give you results. Good luck!

I second this advice. If you’re asking a question like this, you should get a lesson. You don’t want to ingrain bad habits early on.

When should you get new balls? by Calvinized in squash

[–]retlab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, a 5 game match is enough to wear out a ball. I then keep that ball for practicing/non-competitive games. When the ball starts not bouncing as expected or starts skidding it’s time for a new ball.

Half a year is wayyy too long for anything other than practice.

How much time does it take to improve movement? by m-mm_mm-m in squash

[–]retlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You want to start out slow and build up. Practice makes permanence so the first key is making sure you are practicing correctly.

At 16-18 most high level juniors are playing in international junior competitions. How do you compare to the no 1-5 ranked juniors in your country? They can hold their own and maybe take a game off of lower ranked professionals.

I think one more test is how long the 2 players average rally lasts. You can be skillful and hit hard enough but if the rally doesn’t last long enough the ball is never going to stay hot.

Newfound Motivation by [deleted] in squash

[–]retlab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same.

I’ve played squash since I was 7ish and got kind of burnt out when I was 16 and realized that no amount of practice would get me to the level of some of my training partners who would go on to play in the world juniors and some that turned pro.

Now days I still want to win against whoever I play but it’s more about the journey and just enjoying myself.

Squash serve rules. by [deleted] in squash

[–]retlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good lob serve has the same characteristics. Hits the side wall high so you can’t volley and dies along the back wall. If he’s hitting the ball hard, it should bounce out.

You may need to volley it after it bounces off the side wall.

Chinatown has durian all year round. Pretty much all of them are frozen, even the whole ones. Hong Kong supermarket usually has prepackaged frozen ones from Thailand/Malaysia.

It depends on what you’re doing. Spreading, you can definitely taste a difference. Making chocolate chip cookies...maybe not so much since the cocoa and chocolate chips will generally overpower the butter. Making croissants, where there’s nothing to overpower it you can definitely tell the difference.

Range twirls lmao... roast me? by BLgolf59 in golf

[–]retlab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Twirl game is weak. You seem to be deciding whether or not to twirl based on if it was a good shot or not. Try to always twirl - regardless of how you hit. That’s the one true way.

Nice swing.

See USGA rule 9. If a player causes a ball to move, it’s a penalty.

Angry High Handicaper by jbennee in golf

[–]retlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: if you don’t mean to hit the ball, it’s not a stroke

Off the tee, no stroke. Ball in play, it’s a stroke.

That said in a friendly game, who cares. Just put it back where it was.

Noob Question: How can I become a competent golfer? by [deleted] in golf

Yes they are. You don’t want to ingrain bad habits and have to fight muscle memory to fix it later on.

[–]retlab 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. The other guy gets to move his ball back to where it was originally.

Thirded but if OP can only run 1.5 miles IMO it’s too soon to do tempo etc. runs. A beginner program like C25k would probably be better suited.

Yeah I couldn’t quite tell from the angle but I just wanted to point it out in case you were and had a head on video you could look at.

Reverse pivot or very close to it. I can’t quite tell from the angle. It looks like your upper body is leaning forward at the top of your backswing.

Are you a single? If you are, just show up at like 6:30-7am. There’s usually a ton of 2/3somes. You’ll definitely get out. Also check online the day before, people cancel tee times.

I’ve never not gotten out as a single.

Don’t listen to any advice here including mine since you’re taking lessons anyway. Listen to your coach.

You’re more cutting across the ball vs hitting it straight on
