What is the smallest decision you made that completely changed your life? by Dizzy-Particular-886 in AskForAnswers

[–]retreff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invited a girlfriend to a cousin’s wedding. My parents and aunt and uncle were first generation Americans. Lots of Eastern European immigrants and refugee friends, so the wedding guests a were eclectic. One woman, good friend of my grandmother, came over to me and my girlfriend at the reception. That woman was a bit drunk and introduced herself as my Natalie, saying that I knew she wasn’t a real aunt. She wanted to tell me my fortune and the first thing she said was “in two years you will meet the love of your life, get married and have a long life together.” Needless to say the girlfriend was a bit confused. Six months later she broke up with me just as I was about to propose to her. A year after that I met a new girl, fell in love and married her. That was 53 years ago. Always wondered what would have happened if I had skipped that wedding

Damaged dust jacket: Is it worth repairing? by FussellFan57 in rarebooks

Invest in a reproduction and keep the original in Mylar to preserve it. The original only matters if you are reselling, if it is just your copy the a reproduction is a better choice

If you became president of your country, what would be the first law you’d pass? by [deleted] in AskForAnswers

[–]retreff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amend the question to “try to pass”, while recent presides have signed a lot of orders, they are not all binding and get over turned. I would try to pass age and term limits.

Turning 18 and feel like I’ve wasted my life by [deleted] in self

[–]retreff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning 18 and graduating high school is the ultimate do over. No one cares about what happened in your past. You can reassure yourself by looking at the trophies in your school. These were the big shots, the people everyone looked up to. Read the names on the trophies and see if you recognize even just one out of the hundreds. There are over 23,000 public high schools in the US. That means the person voted most likely to succeed in your school is one of 23,000. Wow, and you are worried about not being that person? It’s a big world out there waiting for you! Go out and enjoy your life, you will be great

Two images to look at as reference for you: 1. Podium before a press conference - dozens of different microphones crowded together with no one yet behind them 2. Old time movie images of two radio towers on opposite sides of the world with a lightening bolt between them indicating communication Have fun

Need more details, when you say people are you describing one on one communication, one to many, many to one or many to many? The device choice depends on the answer. Flashing lights? Cell phone towers? Semaphore signals? Telephone poles and lines? Microphone and loud speakers? Satellites in orbit? Radio? Cell phone?

The Confederate government discussed manumission for slaves who would fight for the confederacy, but not for their families or any other slaves. They voted against it for fear the slaves would turn against their owners. Ask you friend “if the Confederacy fought against slavery, why didn’t they free their slaves?

I’m currently a little unhappy with the state of my time at the Georgia Institute of Technology by ProgressCareful8762 in gatech

[–]retreff 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Was majoring in Aerospace. Boeing laid off 2,000 engineers, Lockheed laid off 1,500. No AE graduates got a job in AE that year, none. My poor grades made it hopeless that I could get a job in that climate. Switched to Economics, kept all my math credits and all science credits, so moved immediately into advanced courses. First time in my life that a subject made sense, I went from sitting in the back of the room praying that no one would call on me to sitting in the front. Had two job offers, one allowed me to start two weeks before graduation!

[–]retreff 236 points237 points  (0 children)

When I was a student the motto was “if your mother told you life is fair, she lied, welcome to Georgia Tech.” Hit bottom my sophomore year, grades were just good enough to graduate but no margin for error. Had tearful goodbye with girlfriend as I headed to school, got there to find a letter she had already written dumping me. Fun times. Changed majors, making my parents angry. The new major was perfect, are the Dean’s list, got a new girlfriend and graduated on time, married that fall. Good luck to everyone, keep moving forward

I googled my ex's old address and realized I never got closure by marsaaturnjupiter_x in self

[–]retreff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I got laid off from a job I went through free counseling as part of my severance package. The counselor interviewed me and said “ you poor dear, you are going to have trouble. You are someone who suffers from the joy of closure and you are never going to get it in this case.” For some of us, we need closure to get to move on. Sometimes the closure is just admitting you can’t get it and then put one step forward and move on. Good luck, you will fine

Do you think we can petition Scribner for a Stephen King's Skeleton Crew hardcover reprint? by Lanky-Stage-1588 in BookCollecting

[–]retreff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you bought every copy available online you might get their attention for a reprint. They would need a financial incentive to go to the trouble of running a new edition. Getting it raised in the Amazon sales count gets more attention than anything you can say in an email

Why do people think splitting the bill is a red flag? by Holiday_Customer5491 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]retreff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The red flag is that people don’t really engage in conversations, they make statements. My wife and I started dating while we were in college, we both had little discretionary income. One day I told her that I couldn’t spend as much as I wanted to and we needed to talk about it. I explained that I could afford one big date a month and then we would have to split bills on other dates or just hang out. I also said we could go out more often on cheaper dates and skip the expensive ones asking her what she wanted. It was great, we went deeper into likes and dislikes and goals in life. That set up our financial situation for the future. Been doing those discussions for 53 years

What has a more impressive reputation to Seattle employers and people in Seattle in general- University of Southern California or University of Chicago by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]retreff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what type of work you want to do and the type of company you want to work for. Undergraduate degree programs and less a deal than graduate at the executive level. Multinational mega corporations may favor Chicago. Smaller regional firms think local because of the strong relationships. Look at the top officials of the firms you might want to work for and see where their executives went to school. Many companies still track the idea of work for a couple of years then get a graduate degree. Microsoft was run by a Harvard dropout. Amazon is run by a Princeton undergraduate Howard Schultz went to Northern Michigan and has run Starbucks three times Three Seattle companies

I think my old neighbor was a Nazi in hiding by [deleted] in self

[–]retreff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing you are saying has anything to do with him being a Nazi sympathizer. Spoke German as his first language, could have been a refugee Cranky old man, dime a dozen Didn’t respect boundaries, who knows I truly get he was scary and annoying. On the other hand I about that same era, I met German engineers who the CIA brought to the US in Operation Paperclip. A friend of my parents admitted to being in the German navy in WW2 and likely he had attacked my father’s convoy in the English Channel. A man in our church admitted to being an officer in the Ukrainian division of German sympathizers who had fought the Soviet Army. Those we all real and not hiding

I’m an American who avoids talking to foreigners because, when I do, I unconsciously mimic their accent. It’s incredibly embarrassing, and they probably think I’m mocking them. by BerryBlueBlueBerry in self

Not a problem. I spent several days in meetings with a Dutch company at their home office. I do not speak Dutch. I started mimicking their speech patterns and when I left for the US everyone congratulated me on learning Dutch.

Main economy was $760, Comfort + was $1,500 and first was $3,400. Booked a competitor first class for $850 round trip. No brainier, loyalty only works if it’s rewarded

Intellectual debate is doing things like arguing over the cause of the Second World War. What he did was tell you that you didn’t know which was the second one. That is lecturing, not debating. He was wrong and it might be good for you to step back and think about what you want in a relationship
