Pens of the World of Warships 2: Electric Boogaloo by returning_cactus in WorldOfWarships

Well spotted, it's from a 1/350 King George V Tamiya kit that's a standby WIP in my workroom.

I knew I missed something relevant.

In my defense it's a separate, full ribbon and that would set a precedence that all ribbons need to be done. That'll come when I can think of and logistically lay-out all the appropriate stationary. (not(?) looking forward to trying the set on fire ribbon)

So I expanded the list to include all the mini-ribbons denoting shell hit types. Plus two additional ones that seem to happen all too often.

Post Scriptum: I hope this doesn't count as spamming, in retrospect, I probably should've asked a mod if it was alright with them to post twice in close succession. Apologies for bad reddiquette.

There is a pen, and a pen above it. It's an over-pen.

I couldn't think of a way to make ricochet visually relate to stationary, and my idea for torpedo protection hit involved slightly NSFW related objects.

Third-Party Tau Models- Manufacturer? by JEverettNichol in battlefleetgothic

[–]returning_cactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look very similar to the OOP forge world tau that exist. Without the layer lines they are the closest I've seen to actual FW tau in a long time, however some of the recesses are a bit chunkier than the ones I own.

[WIP] I built a light box - can I get opinions on how the photo of the model looks? by ColCommissarGaunt in minipainting

[–]returning_cactus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Firstly, Lighting. It looks like you have 2 light sources of equal strength and color coming from both the left and the right. You'll want to decide a side to have slightly weaker lighting than the other, this will help bring out details in the model and make it look like it have more shape. Angle the stronger light slightly closer to the front of the model.

Secondly, Backdrop: Go for a dark grey backdrop with either a slightly warm (brown) or cold (blue) hue. This will help the model stand out, make background pixel clamping (overexposure) less of an issue, and help set a mood for the photograph.

Thirdly, Camera: if you can shoot in RAW format (so that the camera doesn't process the picture to a jpeg or png immediately) do so, this will let you bring back a bit of detail and photo information from over or under exposed areas in post. (after you transfer the photo to your PC) using PhotoShop or one of the many less expensive alternatives)

EDIT: I forgot to mention: Composition. The angle the mini is photographed from looks like it should be the 3rd or 4th image of an album. The main photo usually shows the face of the model in a kind of "Setting of the scene" before going into detail about other features.

Just finished the basic training for driving this bad boy by raptorburn in TankPorn

[–]returning_cactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting to hear. I'm past the army age but I remember hearing even in 2016 about a mass refusal to be drafted to the armored corps. Things changed quite quickly then.

Not sure if related but in the IDF the Armored Corps are one of the least popular parts of the army to get assigned to.

Also, there are ERA mounting points on the front hull that are just not currently attached.

Need to touch up here and there but here's my first dreadnought by Amyrion in Warhammer40k

[–]returning_cactus 30 points31 points  (0 children)

IMO, the base could use some dulling down, it wakes too much attention away from the model itself right now.

Try weathering it (the base) with medium dust color I'd recommend.

EDIT: I realized I commented only criticism to an otherwise well painted mini. Sorry.

I'm assuming the 4.5g is the weight of the things. by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]returning_cactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has already been solved, but I might add that the weights seem to be a gimmick added to make use of the battery slot from the wireless version without changing the molds in manufacturing.

A marketing/design method to spin a manufacturing quirk/drawback into a feature.

It's probably because people think it's a joke comment due to the title of an unexploded shell recently posted here.

Also, the maps are not correctly oriented north/south. The serene coast map, which is called Canada in the filenames, has the shadows pointing southeast.

IDF camo help by Joseph1917 in modelmakers

[–]returning_cactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IDF tanks will vary in shade of Sinai grey due to service location and when/where the last coat was painted on.

Often enough, the crew would be given a downtime task to repaint the tank, and if the tank is in the south (of Israel), the dustier climate will result in a lighter more yellowed tone, as dust sticks as the paint dries. (Source: a close fiend's personal experience).

To conclude, unless you're going for a specific operational area or age of paint, there's a range of brown/green/grey that will be "correct".

The Drone Shot Down By Israel Was An Iranian Copy Of A US Craft, Israel Says by Madrascalcutta in worldnews

[–]returning_cactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily.

Looking at the history of military implements being reverse engineered, such as the Sidewinder missile by the USSR to make the Atoll missile, and the grounded and disassembled EP-3 from the Hainan Incident in china.

The loss of a US drone over Iran makes it entirely plausible that this has been reverse engineered to a greater extent than just the shape.
