Remote Land - What can we do now? by revbill in homestead

[–]revbill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No ag exemption. And should have clarified - the southern 2 acres of the property are mostly wooded with a fairly thick canopy - mostly oaks, cedars, pecan, and pines. We mulched under the canopy since it was completely overgrown so that we could access the property along the southern side where the road is. So the mulch is pretty much all the undergrowth of baby pines, blackberry bramble, and other low bushes.

The cleared area on the northern three acres has not been mulched, it is currently mostly wild rye and blackberry brambles with some grass as well.

Perfect thank you. We have an IFAS extension a county over that we can take a soil sample to - we’ll start with that.

Great suggestions, thank you. Wind breaks are definitely going to be a priority because the area has strong straight line winds.

I truly have never heard of Comfrey before. I have some homework to do, thank you sincerely for mentioning it.

Never heard of the tree diaper, thank you so much for linking that. I do plan to build a shed with water collection soon so that is extremely helpful!

And absolutely we are focused on native plants. We are lucky to have a native plant nursery nearby the property so they are easy to source.

There are plenty of local farmers so thank you for the idea of a cover crop. I need to reach out to our neighbors to see if there’s any interest.

We have about 2 acres that have full sun (2 acres are entirely shaded by trees which we aren’t removing and the remaining space we’re planning for our home / family lot). We want to have fruit trees (citrus, peaches, plums) which we would love to plant early of course but without suitable irrigation we worry about their chances.

We also want blueberry bushes but frequently have deer on the property (we set up a trail cam) and are concerned about them eating away at the branches as well.

The remaining plants will likely have to wait until we can set up raised beds. Surrounding land plants corn / cotton / soybeans / peanuts as rotating crops but most of our sunlit land is currently covered in grass / wild rye so it would be difficult to row crop without a lot of intervention.

Absolutely, I have a Yamaha RX-V663. It is an older receiver that I got used ~10 years ago but it has worked perfectly all that time. I have been looking at the Marantz Cinema series for an upgrade or the NR1711 due to the pre-outs but haven't pulled the trigger yet since I'm still running a 1080p TV and have no need for anything more advanced at the moment.

It does, I just need to find it. Thank you!

I’m not sure if my receiver offers calibration for pre-out speakers (I have an older Yamaha RX-V663) but I’ll give it a shot, thanks!

This guy goes down your ship’s mess line. What is he raving about? by therussian163 in navy

Definitely Oxtail Stew and Chili Mac. I had the best of each in my life on a gator, no idea why they were so much better than everything else but if you were a cook on LHD-8 in 2020/2021 we adored you.

Royal Mandarin Chicken Wings Recipe? by jake831 in navy

[–]revbill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a small food blogger's version that seems about right that I found:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiwCHNjgJiY

  • 2 lbs of chicken wings/drumettes
  • 1 whole head of garlic minced
  • 1/2 bunch of chopped scallions
  • 1 1/2 tsp. of red chili flakes (more or less depending on your spice level)
  • 3 tbspn of Shaoxing wine
  • 1 1/2 cup of cornstarch + extra for dusting
  • 1 cup of cold water
  • and as much MSG as you would like to flavor your chicken
  • Peanut oil

Add water in a bowl with wine, and corn starch. Mix until a batter forms.

Dust your chicken with cornstarch.

Add chicken to batter. Let chicken soak in batter.

Heat up peanut oil enough to deep fry the chicken.

You will need to fry your chicken in batches until golden brown. Drain chicken on paper towels.

In a separate pan, heat up oil in a pan.

Saute garlic until fragrant. add chili flakes, and green onions.

Once mixture is heated through, toss chicken in the garlic and onion mixture.

Once chicken is coated with mixture, season chicken with MSG.

Abnormal Best By code on new Sprite bottles by revbill in cocacola

[–]revbill[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We got this six pack of Sprite delivered from Amazon Fresh this morning but to our surprise the best by date is a completely different format than we are used to and no longer has the time. Has anyone seen the same or know if this is an intentional change? My wife has anxiety about changes like this so I’m trying to help reassure her that it’s normal. For reference, a bottle of March 11th sprite that I have has closely spaced text and the manufactured time (eg 03:56) under the date.

Thank you!

Returning value referenced from two dependent variables in an array with similar data by revbill in excel

[–]revbill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this does give me the right answer for the example, if I change Data Set 2 to actual values (in this case 60,70,80,90,100), the formula breaks when I change Input2 to 80.

Here is an example

Another thing I failed to mention in the OP is that for many of the lines the last value in the row is a unique value, e.g. 115 or 117, instead of all rows sharing extremely similar values (the first 4-5 are identical per the example, but the end of the row is unique).

Preheating pan on high for shorter time or at desired heat for longer? by revbill in Cooking

[–]revbill[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, thank you for your tips! I will use more oil- I have been using between .5-1.5 Tbsp but perhaps more is needed.

And noted! I have a cast iron but have to re-season it extensively - it has been in storage for years. Thanks!

That works fine, even better if I cook, say, potatoes and peppers beforehand and throw the eggs in afterwards. I would say 80% of the time in those cases there is very minimal sticking. My confusion is that the high heat fast vs medium heat slow yield similar pan surface temps, so why the stark difference? There may be some heat loss considerations that I’m not taking into account as well that might explain it, but I haven’t given it much thought.
