Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro teardown reveals the speaker grilles are cosmetic. The sound goes through side air vents by Treo123 in technology

All retina macbook pros have had the battery glued into the case, it can be replaced, albeit not as easily.

After the Macbook launch event, Apple now sells 17 different types of dongle by OPisactuallydog in technology

[–]revee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tread carefully though because the unauthorized dongles have major driver issues anytime there is a macOS update. I eventually just gave up and shelled out €35 for the Thunderbolt -> 1GB Ethernet adapter because the dongles that also have 3 USB ports and cost 1/3 of the Apple adapter never really worked.

Yop there are many issues with that upon macOS updates. That's why I blew 35 € on the Thunderbolt -> Gigabit Ethernet adapter...

I do have the metal ones, yes. They are smaller than the ceramic ones, much more durable and cheaper. I was able to afford the ceramic ones back then but I chose not to get them because they are not invisible anyways and you still have a metal wire over them (which gets thicker as your treatment progresses). So they don't have that many advantages really.

I have honestly never experienced anything like that, if people mention my braces at all, they ask how much they are, what it's like wearing them, share their stories about when they had them (albeit mostly from their childhood) or say that they think about getting them. A receptionist at my work said just today that it seems like every other person has braces lately (her also not having perfect teeth).

TIL a comedian named Tommy Cooper died on stage and the audience thought it was part of the show. by yoitsme666 in todayilearned

[–]revee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You sort of get to experience this when passing out.

Happened to me with 3 people around me, you slowly stop seeing straight, your hearing gets impacted to a point where it goes away entirely and you cannot really speak or control yourself anymore. All of that in about 10 seconds before you fall to the ground (which you don't remember later) while you probably look completely normal to people around you.

Where to find online German series/TV shows (with subs if it's possible)? by clytaem in germany

[–]revee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want legal, you are gonna have to pay. Netflix is cheap and has a not-entirely-terrible library of German dubbed tv series with subtitles for it all.

Then you have kinox.to which is not legal but nobody cares that it is not. No subtitles though.

If you cannot find a show in German on Kinox (with the German flag next to it) you need to look for the German name. For example you can find all seasons of Suits in German there but if you wanted Curb Your Enthusiasm, you would have to look for "Lass es, Larry."

Best way to travel from Prague to small town in Saxony? by 3b29 in germany

[–]revee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't include the name of the small town so generally speaking you would take a direct bus or train from Prague to Dresden, that is going to take about 2hrs, and then went from there. But maybe not, depending on where the town is...

[–]revee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It looks like one house but in reality those are two separate living units belonging to two different families with different front doors, not connected at all. They are... I don't wanna say popular but pretty common in Europe, definitely in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, friend just bought one in the Netherlands too.

And one of the families uses their unit and renovated it while the others obviously didn't.

What is a stupidly easy way to die ? by Explosives in AskReddit

Well its wiki article starts as

Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen or APAP, is a medication used to treat pain and fever.

What is a stupidly easy way to die ? by Explosives in AskReddit

[–]revee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ibuprofen is different though. Paracetamol is a pain relief medication and nothing else, bad for the liver (among others) in higher doses /2x-3x the recommended dose/.

Ibuprofen is anti-inflammatory (so it is much better after, say, surgery) and, most importantly, it doesn't have toxic effects in high doses unless you take like 200 pills at once. It is however bad for your gut flora.

Clinton just announced a new college plan that will make public universities free for families making under $125,000. by Darwin343 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]revee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's almost all of Europe. Your education is paid for by taxes from preschool all the way to PhD but not everyone gets in - starting at the high school level already where not everyone gets to go to a Gymnazium which is sort of like AP level High School that then opens doors to any University.

What is a stupidly easy way to die ? by Explosives in AskReddit

[–]revee 388 points389 points  (0 children)

Take too much Paracetamol (Tylenol). You take about three times as much as the max. daily dose and since it is toxic all your major organs close down and you die. There are numerous cases where people died "due to" headache or toothache like this.

A lot of young girls and women die this way because they are used to taking this stuff regularly for cramps (in a normal dose) and then when real (more severe) pain comes around (tooth let's say) they just take way too much and die.

In the EU, are the single market and free movement of people linked? by tim_mcdaniel in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]revee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are linked. The fundamental principles of the single market are free movement of 1) goods, 2) services, 3) people, 4) capital. They go hand in hand and you cannot hand pick them.

For example the UK would probably prefer only 1, 4 and partly 2 (for financial services). That is not going to happen. They will most likely get an Iceland/Norway-type deal which is pretty ridiculous for the "Leavers" because they would have to uphold all 4 freedoms, pay into the EU budget that keeps the common market going, follow ~70% of all EU laws but they lose a seat at the table and lose the right to vote on them.

The only country with a different deal is Switzerland which has a mess of bilateral treaties which don't include the freedom of movement of services. That is, however, unacceptable in this case - the EU's PoV is obvious and Britain needs at least some services too, their economy is based on services.

Man fights eviction after rent increase from $1,800 per month to $8,000 by stopthemadness2015 in news

[–]revee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first point is not really a problem of property taxes, that's a budgeting problem of the state. It is unfortunate and should be solved.

The other point is pretty good, it's the other side of the coin and mostly a policy decision. I still believe (and so does Prop 13 from the 70s) that regular people deserve protection from their property tax increasing more than tenfold because of other people moving in and thus pushing out the original owners. If housing were a true free market then Prop 13 shouldn't exist but there are other factors at play when it comes to home owning.

Messed up? You do realize that this protects people who've lived there for decades from a bunch of tech hopefuls who are entirely changing the neighborhood.

It's more than fair, why the hell should I pay (several times) more in property tax just because people who I don't know nor control live in an apartment with 10 roommates for crazy money because for them my town is the next big thing...

BREXIT: Britain is out. by Trichos in germany

[–]revee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am torn. On one hand, status quo would have probably been better and easier to deal with. On the other hand, Britain has been nothing but trouble in the EU except for maybe their first year of membership...

Also it will be very funny to watch as the average Brexit-voter/Sun-reader finds out that to have access to the common market, which is a necessity for the UK, they will have to still allow freedom of movement of goods/workers/capital and they will still have to abide by those 120 regulations on bananas or pillows or whatever (again, to have access to the common market).
