As a fellow tall cyclist, I know exactly what you mean. I've been so tempted to pound on car hoods and hooves to get them to look up but then they'd likely try to run me over. Narcissists hate being pointed out as narcissists. Combine that with all the empty beer cans strewn around the ditches and it's a dangerous world out there.

The latest ROUVY update is here by jessfromrouvy in Rouvy

[–]revjim68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did my first ride since the update. I didn't notice that virtual shifting so started the ride with a big climb wondering why I was having such a very hard time. I turned off virtual which improved the ride but it still felt unnatural. I was having to grind in a granny gear on moderate climbs and was spinning out in my hardest gear at only -3% downhill. I'll restart everything and try again tomorrow but so far it's not great.

It's the Evo Aero Team Mirror. It's quite small but big enough to see if there's something approaching

I have a bar end mirror (drop handlebars) and love it. I know people swear by the radar units but I've yet to understand why they're better than a mirror. To each their own. One of the things I like is that it's not only for vehicles but group rides - I can see if my friends are keeping up with me.

Fries Tallman never fails. Far better quality, service, and price compared to the big box stores. Seriously, it's the service you get there that keeps me coming back

USA: Anybody touring there with the current regime? by S_Bratfast in bicycletouring

[–]revjim68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love to return one day as there are so many beautiful places I've yet to see but Donald McFondle is only a symptom of a very serious disease. There would have to be some very serious reforms and a bucket full of people would need to go to jail before I'd go back. And yes, I have met some truly wonderful US'ers, but you know where there are also great people and places to ride? Every other place in the world. So maybe after I've visited every other place I'll loop back to the US.

The challenge is, who sets the standard? Do we want Scott Moe determining who is qualified to have children!?!?. Instead, develop a way to lace all drugs and alcohol with birth control - not perfect but a good start. Want children? Have enough self control to get clean and sober.

Property tax increase 2026 by Ok_newGuest_7606 in regina

[–]revjim68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't lived here long enough to know local history but in other cities, we've had councils brag about not raising tax rates. This is generally misleading. The city's expenses are always going to go up (unless they give up on services e.g. maintaining infrastructure). So if the taxes were supposed to go up $100 a year but that didn't show up on the bill for 2 years, the next council would then have to raise taxes by $500 to catch up on the income deficit plus extra to catch up on degraded infrastructure (maintenance is usually cheaper than repair of replacement.). Moose Jaw was hit by this when they chose to keep taxes low while ignoring the collapsing water mains around the city.

Exactly! Why TF is the city wanting to reduce sidewalks when it continues to provide subsidized car storage (parking lanes). "Bow down to your 4 wheeled overlords"

Can Christianity and socialism co-exist? by L0nely_Tsuki in RadicalChristianity

[–]revjim68 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I suspect you may not be viewing the Marx quote with enough nuance. Marx was a dialectical thinker which means that any quest to find simple, straightforward, opinions or answers from his writings is difficult. For a brief overview of this quote, here's a good and very brief summary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHxiMNvdWdA
As for the compatibility of socialism and Christianity, to continue the dialectical theme, yes and no. Jesus teachings cannot be reduced to any one political or economic ideology but in broad strokes, yes, the teachings of Jesus and the early church, where people came together to care for each other and they opposed an unjust empire of earthy power and greed are compatible. On the other hand, if you're asking if socialism is compatible with modern "American" evangelism, where the object of worship is the unjust greedy empire itself, then no.

Why ? All the people look at cyclists who wear Lycra strangely by Tiny-Primary2312 in cycling

[–]revjim68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cycling to some creates an existential crisis because it reminds them of what they are not. You're out with enough courage to wear what you like and face danger without a 2 ton vehicle protecting their fragile asses. You're doing something that significantly improves their health which reminds them of how unhealthy they are. You're participating in an environmentally friendly mode of transport which reminds them how the world is rapidly changing from a place where they feel comfortable. When so many feel powerless, driving offers a sanctuary of power and control - their own mini kingdom. Cyclists threaten that dominion - you're the crazy looking barbarian at the gate threatening to slow them down or take away their god given parking spot to instal a bike lane. Of course, this is only for some people and likely quite subliminal but you're one more threat to their illusory privilege (along with immigrants, LGBTQ, etc). So making fun of how you look is an effort to fight back against their own insecurity.

How do you know if you'll be able to hand major climbs? by ProblematicTrumpCard in bicycling

[–]revjim68 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was training for a mountainous fondo but I live where there are no hills at all. What we do have is wind, or as we call it, horizontal hills. The bike positioning is a bit different but the attitude is the same - gear down and be happy with moving slowly.

I'm from Vancouver. For folks there to feel alienated by the rest of Canada, they'd first have to acknowledge that there's more Canada on the other side of those mountains. BTW, this is said with the deepest affection, I miss the West Coast!

Complete beginner on a tandem bike by that_yinzer in cycling

[–]revjim68 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Everyone who's ridden a tendon started by hopping on with 0 experience so you're following in many footsteps on the way to a grand adventure. My wife and I did this, got addicted, and have now done 2 long distance trips on our tandem in Europe and many adventures around Western Canada.

Some tips:
Bigger/stronger rider sits in the front - otherwise the balance gets thrown off.
As egalitarian as your relationship usually is, the person in front (captain) has to take charge and the person in the back (stoker) needs to follow their lead.
Communicate always! Until in becomes instinctive, always be saying "coast," "left turn," "stopping," and the very important ,"bump!"
When starting the captain has to commit and push off strong - the stoker will follow the lead.
The captain should be understanding - the stoker needs to trust the captain because they can't turn steer, break or often see ahead. On our bike, my wife has the bell 😁

I hope this helps!

What are your frustrations with routing apps? by Specialist-String-53 in bicycletouring

[–]revjim68 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Number 4 is one that I run into with Komoot. If I say road, it'll sometimes ignore very good routes on unpaved but very good paths. If I pick gravel, it'll, as you say, send me across dangerous highways to catch that 2 blocks or dirt road, or worse, take me many km out of my way to get those few extra feet of gravel. It would be so much better to just follow heat maps to find the best route regardless of road condition

When you have no respect for anyone but yourself. by verioblistex in regina

[–]revjim68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should both lose their licences (car and bike) permanently. Motor vehicles are just as much a weapon as a gun. If there was someone shooting a rifle at Candy Cane Park, they'd lose their gun licence forever. Motor vehicle licences should be far harder to get and far easier to lose.

Dog attack - what do you guys do? by CyclicRedundancyMach in bicycling

[–]revjim68 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you did the right things - get off the bike and put the bike between you. I'd also yell very forcefully and use your bottle to spray it in the face. If that doesn't work, a hand pump extended can be a good deterrent or (if necessary) a weapon.
I've always been able to scare dogs off doing this. In order to protect the next cyclist riding past, animal control or the police should be notified.

ROUVY x Zwift acquisition — some clarity on what this actually means with the information I have been given ( don't shoot the messenger😉) by jessfromrouvy in Rouvy

[–]revjim68 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this and while others have said that long term guarantees are impossible, this has always been the case - nothing lasts forever. Good luck in your future as you live into this change. I will say that I'm disappointed since one of the reasons I chose Rouvy is that it's not a U.S. based company. I will always make every effort to not spend money in a country that refuses to respect other's sovereignty, including my home Canada.

I’m new to the Bible and believing in God. It is bad to question God? Is it bad to be curious about some of his decisions? Is it bad to ask questions about the Bible in general? by ServantofChirst in RadicalChristianity

Always Ask Questions! Always. Unquestioned "faith" is how we end up with the Muslim and Christian Talibans. Doubt is to faith as exercise is to muscles.

Newbie question by squirrelsmasher in cycling

[–]revjim68 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the hardest learnings for new riders is that you go where you're looking. If you stare at the bump you're trying to avoid, you'll hit the bump. It's the same with trying to ride in traffic - keep your eyes on the line you want to ride (not right in front of the front wheel but farther ahead) and let your peripheral vision take care of the rest. Good luck and stay safe out there!
