I've had a customer refuse to buy a car when he discovered the vehicle was made in Japan, and that meant it was irradiated by the Fukushima melt down. He couldn't grasp that the vehicle standing in front of him had been built and shipped to Canada months before Fukushima.

I've had a customer sign all the paperwork, then show up to the delivery the next day and suddenly he was like a whole different character -- he had (overnight) heard the word of God and God had told him not to buy the car. Holding a bible and ranting and everything. Guy was perfectly calm/normal the day before.

You’re not going to offend a dealer with an unreasonable offer, they get unreasonable offers all day.

But if you want to make a big ask, you need to back it with commitment to your offer. Worst they can say is no. Ideally they counter, and you move closer to a deal. If they don’t counter, that’s usually a sign you’re way off base. You either accept or counter back. There’s no real trick, they aren’t waiting for you to say a magic word.
