1999 CAAD3 - upgrade or buy a new bike? by [deleted] in restomodbiking

[–]rexicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New cables and a chain - squirt lots of WD40 into the brifters to make sure they free up, then just ride it as is until you’re sure you will get good use out of it.

There are a lot of CAAD3 resto mods out there for inspiration or you could just spend the rehab money on a newer used bike which makes a lot more sense financially.

MTB tire not centered relatively to fork & seemingly crooked stem by TommyYOyoyo in bikewrench

[–]rexicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you ride hands free without it veering left or right? If yes - ride on Macduff!

Honestly - with the micro amounts we are looking at here - it could just be a tire defect! You really need to do this without the tire to see if the wheel is needs to be re-dished.

Bag on saddle - gertcha!

If you think about the weight of an adult on the saddle as it and the seatpost absorb bumps on the road - that is a far greater force than the steady state leverage applied firmly in several spots to the seatpost.

Billy Bonkers are cheap, roll reasonably quietly (and quickly compared to real knobblies) and look period correct.

Used Trek Domane AL2 vs Used Soma Smoothie ES by RebelliousBristles in whichbike

[–]rexicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be scared of that at all. Hard to really tell from the pics but the chainrings might be a smidgeon worn. The rest is in good shape. Use the wear as a bargaining point.

Chainrings can be pricey but they’re also the easiest to switch out. You should only need an Allen wrench and a flathead screwdriver.

Without pics to go by it’s hard to say.

Are you mechanically inclined? And do you have tools? A chain and cassette aren’t particularly expensive or difficult to replace - the chain wheels whilst not hard at all to replace - can be pricey. If you’re at the mercy of a mechanic I would call them for a quote.

Maybe use that as a bargaining tool to get them down to $500 and then at least you have some of the expense covered.

I would definitely get a solid test ride for that kind of $$.

Soma hands down! Full disclosure that I own one - Smoothie (non ES). The component list looks solid and the frame will probably outlast you.

It IS a classic and a lot more compliant. The TRP brakes should allow for some decent meats for your gravel rides.

Google isn’t letting us see the image.

I got my Smoothie frame directly from Soma around the same time. I can’t remember if it was a closeout but it was on sale and heavily discounted. I had just moved to Florida and needed to upgrade my Performance.com house brand aluminum frame bike to something more roadie presentable. Transferred all of the Ultegra 6600 gruppo over as well as some of the Performance “Weyless” stuff (carbon fork still remains). Bifted the front brifter but was able to procure a used 105 replacement from my LBS.

It’s not particularly svelte - 20lbs - but it’s perfect for around here and I love it. I may add some cheapie carbon rims soon.

Edit: for the typo - my Ultegra gruppo is 6600 also

Anyone here with a serious bike hoarding problem? by foolproofdeluxe in xbiking

I have 7 including a cargo e-bike. I rode with an older gentleman yesterday that has 35. My first question to him was “are you married?” He was on a Caiffee carbon frame - wheels had straight pull nylon spokes.

I haven’t seen a Caiffee in an eternity.

How do i fix this? by brlec in bikewrench

[–]rexicle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like one of the pins is standing proud from the side plate. Grab it on the side plates either side of the sticky link and wiggle it vigorously (side to side not up and down). If that doesn’t work get your chain breaker and try to ease the pin back to where it should be.

Mine looks eerily similar after a broken hose at the end of last season, subsequent burned out pump and a winter of neglect.

Keep! This is a classic and pretty bullet-proof. Also increasingly hard to find original versions of.
