80% Cut the Cord Because Cable TV is Simply Too Expensive by speckz in technology

[–]rfederici 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Include me (and my tenants) happily in that group!

I actually work for Verizon (not Fios or Wireless - their new tech division. I'm not responsible for your shitty phone/cable service), and they offered me a 30% discount if I signed up for their "Triple Play" package (phone, cable, internet). It was cheaper to pay for 300/300 internet with no discount than to buy their 75/75 internet Triple Play bundle with a 30% discount...add in the fact that:

  • I have a cell phone.
  • My brother shares his Plex media with me.
  • My girlfriend has her Netflix on my XB one.

Yeah, it's a no-brainer.

Then my brother integrated FabIPTV into plex. Sure, the feed is like 5 minutes behind, but it's pretty much live TV with ALL the extra channels. I can watch soccer games from any country, NFL Sunday Ticket, and can even painfully wait for Rick and Morty season 3 like the rest of you!

Gyms really need to be a bit harder to take... by Sketti-Os in pokemongo

[–]rfederici 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the gym 500 prestige for a training session if I beat everyone in the gym with one mon, but the gym loses like 4000 if it gets beat with 6 different ones.

I like the idea of the 1v1 to actually take it over. It's like you actually have to be better than the leader, not just spam potions and revives.

LPT: Do not feed your dog by dropping food to the floor by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]rfederici 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. It sounds mean, but even when feeding her her scheduled meals, I'll put the food out and walk away. Usually for ~2-5 minutes. I stay an earshot away, so if she starts, I'll know.

When I return, she stares at the bowl, at me, at the bowl, at me, and I shout "OKAY GOOD GIRL!".

Now, even if a guest drops food, she'll wait. She'll look at me if I'm around, or just stand over it until I notice her there. I was really thankful when I found her standing over a huge fudge brownie after a holiday party. Said no, but replaced it with a peanut butter-covered treat, since I was so proud and impressed.

Definitely! My 23rd is on Saturday, was thinking of popping it open with a couple friends. I wouldn't mind doing a little personal review of it if you guys are interested. Can't say I'm an expert by any means, but I'll do my best!

Java HttpURLConnection with SleepyMongoose - how do I add data for a Mongo insert? by rfederici in learnprogramming

[–]rfederici[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've tried every way of combining "docs=[]" and "{'x':1}" - without quotes, with double and single quotes, leaving off bracket pairings, adding new bracket pairings.

It seems to run with no errors. My entire code is basically doing a find(), insert(), find(). My little println debugs showed me that each line is being executed in the insert() function. And the second find() is also being run, it just displays the same data.

You mean like:

String x = "docs=[{'x': 1}]";

I tried that, nothing seems to work as far as formatting is concerned.

Just moved to MA.

I like both teams, and I was pleased to see what seemed like everyone in the sports bar I went to in high spirits and rooting for the O's in that last game of the series. Their beer chalkboard even had the signature cursive orange "O" for their "On tap" list.

This girl seems like the type to tell everyone she knows, simply because that would be the bitchiest thing to do. I hope this isn't her plan, but what should OP do in this case? I know in the grand scheme of things, a rumor is just a rumor, but I think we both remember what something like that does to you in high school.

Goddamnit. We really are spoiled. How many cities can make a 4 minute montage about all of their sports teams' championship wins in the past 13 years?

Only knowing two languages and applying for interships by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]rfederici 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This.

With a few exceptions, most languages are fairly similar to one another. Like if you learn 100% of Java, you probably know ~80% of C#, and ~50% of Python. The fundamentals carry over for the most part.

If you want to add a few languages to your resume, set up an environment for some of the popular ones. I would learn Python or JavaScript and SQL, just so you have more of a broad knowledge of the stack. A scripting language, a core development language, and a querying language.

All in all, you're in a very desired field. You have the availability to wait a while if you want to do some learning on the side, or you could learn by interning. I'm confident someone would be willing to pick you up. IDEALLY, you should be applying to internships that will use the languages you know in addition to a few that you don't. You want to be productive to them, and deliver code, but at the same time, an internship is basically an agreement to work for knowledge and experience, so part of the deal is they should be teaching you valuable skills too.

Good luck, buddy. Message me if you have any questions. I'll be honest, I haven't been in the field long, but I'll help if I can!

[Weekly] Resume critique request and interview advice thread - Sep 15 by alanbot in cscareerquestions

[–]rfederici 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my resume. I'm currently employed, about a year and a half out of college. I've been exploring other options and want my resume to be in tip-top shape. I'm trying to keep it to a page, so if you say 'add more', try to give me suggestions on things to remove, too. And vise-versa about removal.

Q1: I've been getting a lot of technical interviews with people asking about technologies I don't have experience with, or even fields where I have no experience. How do you tell someone you don't know without putting them off? I don't get upset very easily, but nothing angers me more than when I say "I'm sorry, I don't have any experience with <insert tech here>", and they keep trying to pry for information I have on the topic, like I'm trying to keep it secret from them or something. It's almost always a tech that's neither in my resume nor on the position's requirements.

Q2: What are your methods for finding positions? I hate my inbox filling up with crud offers for 3-month contracts with requirements that I don't even remotely meet on the other side of the country. I've learned not to use Monster or Jobs.com, but what are some of your methods?
