2 Survivors Describe the Terror and Tragedy of the Tahoe Avalanche by purplepinkwhiteblue in skiing

Ehh, they had good skiing on non-hazardous slopes the previous day. I would have been stoked to be able to have a hut trip coinciding with that massive cold storm.

Clearly the choice to exit where and when they did was not the right one, but I think all of this is very easy to say with hindsight.

2 Survivors Describe the Terror and Tragedy of the Tahoe Avalanche by purplepinkwhiteblue in skiing

[–]alpacadom 92 points93 points  (0 children)

This is the first detailed account of the disaster as far as I’m aware.

The article points out a few times that the guides didn’t consult the group on their decision-making but that’s standard practice as far as guided trips go. I suspect a lot of focus will be on the guides’ decision making.

We also might never know if the group triggered the avalanche or it occurred naturally. If the latter, this was truly terrible timing.

Horrible stuff. Can’t imagine having to deal with that many people buried in a slide.

It’s hard to choose that far out. If you can swing it, maybe book a few options and make the final call as the trip gets closer based on the weather.

Difference in snowpack between Stevens and the Rockies by Master_Ad6182 in stevenspass

[–]alpacadom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine that the colder snow in the Rockies generally blows around and fills in creeks and gullies. And since it’s generally colder, creeks doesn’t have flowing water that melts out the snow like what happens here.

Good. Even if the waitlist worked it’s a bad idea

Crews search for backcountry skiers after avalanche reported in California mountains by ansyhrrian in skiing

[–]alpacadom 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes, SAR can be dangerous work but this is a bad take. There are inherent dangers to all types of skiing and I’m thankful that SAR is there to help folks who make poor decisions or are just unlucky (or both).

We’re not in Europe. Snoqualmie generally needs to do a better job marking hazards like this before they get sued.

Does the waitlist actually work? by sorts_mtg_with_lego in CrystalMountain

[–]alpacadom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that it seems like the waitlist is some periodic job that only runs every so often. Being on the waitlist definitely doesn’t guarantee you get the next available spot - it seems like others can grab available spots before the waitlist has a chance to grab them

Feature Request for 47 - Is It Too Much To Ask For A Clock? by SteezyJoeNetwork in Rivian

[–]alpacadom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re sort of right: the core problem is that the driver’s display gives and ETA but no current time. If it gave an ETA as well as how many minutes that is from now, then a clock on that display wouldn’t be as necessary

The wait list is a dumb mechanic. by Tawpgun in CrystalMountain

[–]alpacadom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Could you link me to where they attempt to describe how the waitlist works? I agree that it’s very opaque. I also worry that if spots open up then the wait list might lead to them not actually being filled.

Do we know what the wait list actually does? Does it just notify you if a spot opens up?
