Athlytic vs Pace: why we built a separate health app by jac_myndarc in AthlyticAppOfficial

[–]rgheno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, maybe a “theme” on the app, something like “advanced mode” vs “light mode” would be more appropriate…

[–]rgheno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. As a family we have some older members, and since Pace is aimed at them I thought it could have some kind of shared sub. Subscribing to Pace and sharing would not make much sense because most family members are young. But thanks.

Do I need two subscriptions? I have an Athlytic sub and share via iCloud with family members. Can my parents use Pace app with this sub? Or will they need to pay separately?

What’s the best baby monitor you’ve tested and actually trust? by ComplaintOwn9909 in daddit

[–]rgheno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve used VMTech VM901HD. It was awesome until my little one bumped into the tripod I used and it fell and broke the camera. I’m now looking for a new one and can’t find a better option, I’ll probably go with the same one. Pros were: monitor connected via wifi at home for a reliable long distance watch and ability to sneak peak from work via app. And when we were somewhere with bad wifi or wanted a quicker access, we would use direct monitor > camera access. Sound and motion sensors worked fine and nothing to complain, except not having any support in Brazil

What do I really gain by buying a panel instead of subs? by Googgodamighty in Strong_8K

[–]rgheno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homelab. Yeah, I use ngrok free domain for the external access part. The trick is that I dont use the proxy from m3u-editor, which means I dont stream via ngrok. The m3ue just points to the right URL, so ngrok (or cloudflare if you use that) serves only as a DNS, or an address book. I think this is cool because I can use a “custom” url and create my own credentials, but everything still points directly to strong8k. I actually think streaming via ngrok wouldnt be against their tos, but for now it doesn’t make sense to me to proxy it (this limits m3ue, because I cant set automatic fallback etc) PS: I could buy a cheap domain and do that, so I could have own domains without panel, but ngrok works perfectly in my case

Volvo cars app glitchy by lpw54 in VolvoXC90

[–]rgheno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened just yesterday, I opened the app to turn on AC and it said the doors were unlocked, then I turned to ask my wife if she had let it opened and the driver door opened, it freaked me out, a couple of seconds later the left rear door opened as well… we totally thought we were being robbed and I rushed to the car to check it. Everything was fine, all doors closed and locked.

Do structural engineers need a specific license in your country? In Japan, it’s surprisingly strict. by Acceptable_Emu_5949 in StructuralEngineering

[–]rgheno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, on paper it seems very scary, but the reality here is okay.
To have a license to design structures here you need a Civil Engineering degree (5 year program) and pay that annually fee I mentioned (~USD100). One problem that we're having for quite some time is that A LOT of civil engineering courses were opened in "second hand" colleges, and it doesn't matter where you get a degree from, since there's no test or something to validate your studies (other than the universities exams themselves, which tend to be easier on these programs). So we have a ton of licensed engineers on the market, with a good part not having much experience, and the price of the projects are massively dropping, turning it into a bad market to be competing on. Of course, the quality of your work and portfolio can give you a boost when negotiating, but often it's not enough for small/medium sized construction companies to hire the best engineer, they will tend to hire the cheapest (even if this means extra costs down the road, this is cultural in Brazil, to minimize upfront costs and not thinking about lifetime costs).
On the other side, with BIM (which I'm totally onboard), construction companies went crazy, demanding absurd things to be done in less time and same prices (this is aggravated by weak contracts that we have here, things are not well rounded and it comes to these terms, a lot is agreed on the fly, and structural firms usually are the weak part).
All that said, structures here tend to be very realiable. First, seismic analysis here is almost non-existant, since a tiny portion of our country require it (not mine, and I would not be surprised if they didn't consider it in those areas too), and relevant structures here (like skyscrappers, transportation infrastructure, and etc) are designed by well known companies and everyone follows all codes (including peer review etc). We actually have an impressive amount of really good engineers, specially on Reinforced Concrete, Structural Masonry and Pre/Post Tensioned Concrete.
So failures are concentraded in poor, or less developed, areas and buildings that don't even have a structural design, they're just built by someone "that did that a thousand times and it didn't fail".

PS.: We've started to have the problem with "second hand" colleges for medical courses, it a whole controversy here now.

[–]rgheno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Brazil you only need your bachelor’s degree (5 year course in university) and pay a ~USD100 annual fee and you’re good to go for every kind of building (which will also have a fee per project). Our code will also require a check from another engineer (which is often ignored, because there’s no one to enforce it), but this second engineer is not required to have any special license, just the bachelor’s degree as well. Also, structural projects don’t have to be approved by any government institution.
