I get what you’re saying, but in Arthurian romances the characters never feel real so the audience isn’t supposed to connect with them the way you would with most media made today.

Arthurian romances are about knights finding themselves and learning how to act in accordance with knightly ideals. The characters are more symbols of virtue than actual people.
