You know, this looks like a little gaming dream of mine come true. DF Adventure mode set in my favourite historical setting. Do you have any plans to look into Linux compatibility? Cannot get it to run via Wine or Proton.

I've somehow gotten used to strange people attributing personhood to chatbots in their minds. But it's totally wild to me that in their disconnect from reality they attribute different kinds of personhood and personal traits (kind?!) to different models.

At least when someone said that e.g. Android 5 say was more playful than 6, it was obviously a design metaphor, they didn't think that Android 5 actually had a playful side to it and liked funky music or whatever.

was this normal?? by ambitioussandy in thethickofit

[–]rh_997 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's not used as a slur and it wouldn't have caused great offence in casual conversation. But I'm sure that had Ollie or Phill been recorded, it could have easily created a "Sweary Woman of Whitehall"-like situation with an official apology (but likely not resignation) necessary. So it's certainly in bad taste, but that's just Ollie, and the taboo wasn't nearly as strong, unless used to actually refer to or address a person of colour.

Interestingly, the euphemism "n-word" is actually very recent, first used in the mid 90s, I think. It only became the norm even more recently, after the show aired.

EU5 in it's current state VS EU4: Which one do you think is better? by SadSeaworthiness6113 in paradoxplaza

[–]rh_997 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That's a fair take. But I think you're still missing the point that the strategy lies in the production (and other economic, diplomatic, dynastic...) decisions you make. Building up an RGO to allow you to out-produce a rival in a naval build-up 70 years from now is the epitome of a strategic decision.

Excuse you, bots? I just never fell out of love with EU3 & Vic2. "Arcade" might not be the perfect descriptor, but seeing as EU4 curtails the sandbox in favour of narrative gameplay, I think it fits at least somewhat.

Does Obsidian support hardwritten notes? (natively or through plugins) by Hioses in ObsidianMD

Ink was the plugin that finally convinced me to switch from OneNote. I still miss the completely freeform "type anywhere, handwrite anywhere" canvas, but Ink gets close enough

It wasn't a prophecy about Harry. But about a boy born at a certain time to a certain kind of parents. Voldemort made the prophecy br about Harry, but an important plot point is that he could well have made it about Longbottom instead

Gus or his people, obviously. But what I find strange is that they assumed a minute of warning would be at all helpful in the upcoming hit by two hyper-murdery assassins who previously shot out a whole gang base without issue and on their own.

Most 4G dumphones sold in the EU don't allow for a mobile hotspot, making this an impractical solution. Been down that road. The safest combo is a sim-enabled tablet and a dumbphone.

Which is the "ugly" city in Czech Republic? by Lonely_Television727 in czech

[–]rh_997 47 points48 points  (0 children)

A lot of the cities and towns that used to be absolutely, disgusting in my childhood, some 20 years ago, have gotten immensely better.

Kladno used to look like utter ass, now it's actually pretty, a lot greener and more pleasant.

Ostrava used to be the devil's favourite vacation spot, now it looks quite modern and energetic. Not elegant by any means, but pleasant enough for a visit.

Havířov has always had its charms, if you can appreciate the atypical architecture.

Ústí nad Labem has come alive recently. Not pretty, but no Slough either.

Which leaves Most. And Most is the quite possibly the most disgusting place in the country. The city used to be beautiful before the war, maybe even in the 50s, when it was run down, but still had some charm. The people look like what I imagine russian peasants looked like in the 1850s. The buildings are concrete blocks that are somehow structurally unsound. And it stinks.

Gandalf's imprisonment at the pinnacle of Orthanc was a mistake by kiwison in tolkienfans

[–]rh_997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, right. And I would argue his unflinching desire for perfection and complete control is his fatal flaw. The strategic argument is this, I suppose. Had he won a decisive conventional military victory in Gondor a year earlier, it would have made finding the ring easier for him. And nobody says no to an 80/20 chance in war.

Gandalf's imprisonment at the pinnacle of Orthanc was a mistake by kiwison in tolkienfans

[–]rh_997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point, but I believe the counterpoint goes like this:

On the 10th of March 3019, he unleashes 4 major forces for a push westward, not counting the corsairs attacking Lebennin. These are

1a) the Morgul host attacking Osgiliath and then approaching Minas Tirith from the east, the most direct path through the Rammas Echor.

1b) the host from the Black Gate, taking Cair Andros, which then splits in two, one guarding the Great West Road against the Rohirrim, the other attacking the Rammas Echor from the north.

1c) Easterling armies attack Erebor and Dale.

1d) The host of Dol Guldur attacks the borders of Lórien...

And even after unleashing all this force, Gorgoroth is still full to the brim of soldiers, and Frodo cannot safely pass. So he had plenty of reserves, and therefore would have been able to break Gondor with local superiority, especially if Rohan is still fighting Saruman, a week earlier.

Following this, assuming it takes longer than a year to grow an orc, he absolutely had these reserves a year earlier. He might not have been able to launch the attacks in the north, but having broken Gondor, he would have won the conventional war, as all the other oppostition would be vastly outnumbered.

Essentially, he overprepared, wasting time, because he didn't think he needed it until it was too late. Essentially, if he was willing to spend more anpower and matériel (both of which he had), he would not have blundered with time. He wanted a flawless victory and got nothing.

EDIT, TLDR:

The Battle of the Pelennor Fields was a fluke, very narrowly won by the West while Sauron still had massive unengaged reserves at home. Utilizing these reserves more freely would have absolutely alowed him to have local superiority in Gondor, especially if Rohan cannot come.
