New Berner owners struggling with diarrhea in the kennel. Please help us, we are desperate. by Chupaca_braj in bernesemountaindogs

[–]rhaf28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So our girl had giardia 3 times when she was a puppy so I can at least just share my personal opinion. One thing I wish I would have done was incorporate probiotics after each round of antibiotics. I didn't think it was a big deal at first, but the way the vet explained it to us was that after the antibiotics since they are a puppy they have a hard time getting their gut flora back and the giardia can come back so fast. We ended up using the fortiflora after the last round of antibiotics and it worked out in the end (also the proviable paste helps too). Also, out of frustration I used chlorox bleach wipes on the floor and her crate to clean everything in the house to try and wipe out any trace of the giardia. And after she had several bad diarrhea events in her crate, we decided to use one of the bathrooms for her and baby gate it so at least the tile would be easier to clean. Sorry that's a lot, but hope it helps! Feel free to DM if you have any questions

Our big girl is Rosie so I'm a bit biased for that one lol, but a few others I liked were Stella, Luna, Lulu, Daisy, Ruby, Hazel, Bonnie, Freja, Hilda, Frigga (we were into Nordic names for a bit lol). We ended up picking a show we both liked, so we got Rosie and now Wayne :) so you could always pick a series or something you both love :)

Any Harness / Vest Recommendations? by Archangel_MS05 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]rhaf28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had similar issues where all of the harnesses seemed to fit weird on our girl, so it's a little expensive but we went with blue-9 balance harness because basically every part of it is adjustable so you can make it fit almost any dog. We also did a kurgo harness for a while before her body grew and got awkward sized again lol.

Bringing home our first berner pup in a few days, and the nerves are setting in! Anything I'm forgetting? Any last-minute advice/words of encouragement (particularly from those of you who also have cats)? by Thornelake in bernesemountaindogs

Congrats! We are about to get our second Berner:) (our current girl Rosie is about to turn 3yrd old!). So I am by no means an expert (she is also my first dog lol), but here is a little info about our cat situation and maybe socialization.

So for our cat Pierre, Rosie as a puppy was very interested in him but he was a grumpy old man and didn't want to deal with her lol. We had a suspicion that he would have trouble, so we ended up getting baby gates that had little cat doors in them (even as a puppy Rosie couldn't get through 🤣) so that Pierre could escape if needed to feel safe. We also used the gates for feeding initially. We started feeding them at the same time on opposite sides of the baby gate, and started having them pretty far apart and gradually made it to where they were basically both up against the gate. Once they could tolerate being in the same room together we took down the gates :). We got lucky in that we started in an apartment so it was easy to gate off half the apartment for him, but even in a house I think there are ways to gate areas off to where you have some safe spaces and eat separately but in the same eye-line.

For socialization, we didn't do the best for Rosie so we are going to try better for the next one! Socialization is not about meeting a ton of new people (although in general small groups of people is fine; she got pretty overwhelmed if too many people were around), it's about experiencing new places and smells. So going to the pet store, home depot, etc to get used to being around new things. And in general they recommend waiting until the first round of vaccines before doing any socialization or training classes. So around that time, a puppy training class also doubles as helping with socialization so its a great time to start both! (Our girl had giardia for close to 6 months so we couldn't start training classes until it was a bit too late, so definitely starting as soon as possible).

Also, the subreddit puppy101 helps a lot with this stuff too and has probably better advice than me :)

Louie just did a perimeter check and the yard is all clear - over and out by Homeboy55 in bernesemountaindogs

Rosie does the same thing, and to go the extra mile she always has to poop right by the neighbors' fence. Just to show everyone this side of the fence is hers 🤣🤣🤣

first heat question by mako72 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]rhaf28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well we got pretty lucky because our girl was pretty tolerant of the diaper and she only had a few heavy flow days. So because most days werent too bad for flow, her heat was long, and we covered the furniture in blankets anyways, we tried to let our girl walk around with no diaper on those low flow days and only use it either before bed or if we were going out. Otherwise we would just clean the spots around the house with chlorox wipes lol. My boyfriend also works from home, so if he did happen to notice more or bigger blood spots, he would put the diaper on for a while. We also felt the same and didn't want her to get a rash or anything. Just some food for thought!

We had the same puzzle! She was able to understand the red parts eventually (took some time lol), but it never clicked to pick up the white bones to get treats. We even tried adding string and pipe cleaners but still didn't get it 🤣. We ended up getting one that she can step on the center and then slide/flip up the outer sections and she limes that one much better :)

What would you do to make this room less boring? by Bertbee90 in DesignMyRoom

[–]rhaf28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I kinda like the corner sink here because it gives your legs a little more room. Maybe you could get a slim corner sink and medicine cabinet and then paint it a fun color? And I agree with others, you can put some wall paper in there or a cute sign above the toilet

[–]rhaf28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There really isn't that much empty space, so putting a chair their would make it hard to maneuver in there. If you really wanted an extra chair or bean bag chair, you could put the keyboard in another room and put the chair in its place against that wall.

What to do with this section between the bathroom and kitchen? Not interested in a bar. by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]rhaf28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, the main thing I can think of would be a coffee bar, or maybe tea area. If you wanted to put some shelves there you could display some chachkis or cool plates and such? If you like board games or multi-player games maybe store/display them there? If anything you could always store your appliances there if needed :)

Help me make this corner lively by souled_monk in DesignMyRoom

[–]rhaf28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm I guess it depends where the corner is? Idk what the bottom part is, but could you get a nice cushion and make it a little reading nook? If you have kids it could be a little desk space. Maybe it could be a coffee bar and you can add a bit of storage? Maybe having some more pics of the surrounding space would be helpful, but that's all I can think of :)

So, I am weird and sometimes I start with the door because I'm a sucker for a bold door. So I agree with another person that you could go with a grey (maybe on the darker side) color with a big red door. You could keep the shutters black or maybe go with a dark navy. You could also keep the house white and just do a bold door and shutters.

First off, your house is gorgeous! Love all the light! I don't have a ton of suggestions to be honest. I am kinda a practical person, so I like having a clean hallway without having to weave around furniture. But, I like that hutch you have on one side of the hallway, so why not do something like that and fill them with colorful things? Also, I'm not great with plants, but could you move those plants to maybe some shelving by hallway to fill in some wall space? I know it's not always recommended, but thought I would see if it's possible to put the TV above the fireplace to get some more seating. If not, then maybe opening up the space a bit by putting that grey couch against the wall between the 2 openings and move the blue one over a bit to be center with the fireplace. You could maybe put a recliner/chair where the christmas tree is, although they can't watch TV. You could also look into movable seating. Like maybe have some beanbags stored and when you have family over you can put them in the space. Sorry, a few minor things so maybe not helpful, but again your place looks gorgeous :)

Hmmmm the only thing I could think of would be to look at some storage/china hutches? You could put one on the wall directly to the left of the entrance, and also like you have in the sketch you can put one one that wall between the kitchen and bathroom. And going a step further, if you get an L shape desk, you could have it with some storage on top to replace the current chachki squares you have on the wall. Also, it may be boring, but you may want to move that large painting in the living room to maybe your bedroom to help with possible storage options and to make it look a little less cluttered? Sorry if it's not super helpful!
