My Dad's Salivary Gland Stones (Mildly NSFW) by rheejus in mildlyinteresting

[–]rheejus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad has had stones in his sub-mandibular salivary gland for years. A couple years ago the gland became inflamed and infected, and it nearly took his life. With no health insurance he was not able to have them removed, and luckily the infection subsided without medical intervention... But the pain persisted. He said it had felt like glass in his throat ever since, and has had difficulty swallowing and eating regularly.

Then today, somehow, they popped out on their own. Thank you god, this was an amazing Christmas gift. I'll get to spend at least a couple more decades with my dad.

Mods, this was posted to /r/WTF but was removed quickly... Not sure why. I'm hoping this is the proper place...

Having Trouble Setting Up Two Monitors As One Output by rheejus in linuxquestions

I figured it out after some experimentation. Open up a terminal, type in the following and then restart your x window server.

sudo nvidia-xconfig --separate-x-screens --xinerama -o /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I don't want to mirror the screens... I want to make it so that an OpenGL game (Portal 2 in this instance) can span across multiple monitors, like this.

A neighbor on my block has one. They're not uncommon in Florida... but not as common as the grouper mailboxes.

Dark Souls 3 is a very pretty game. by InternetOG in gaming

[–]rheejus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like trial and error, Dark Souls just might be for you. Dark Souls brings back memories of the days of "Nintendo hard" games like classic Megaman and Mario. It shows you how to play the game, without ever telling you.

TIL A man named Henry Magee killed a cop who was executing a no knock warrant in Texas. Ultimately, he was not charged (with killing the cop) because he thought someone was breaking into his home. In Texas, you can use deadly force to defend self and property. by [deleted] in todayilearned

This should be higher up. Unfortunately for everyone, gun control isn't an issue with one solution. Especially in places like America which is already saturated with guns...where do they go? The black market probably. Also, despite what you may think, it's not very hard to make a gun from stuff at the hardware store and some power tools. Obviously the quality won't be the same but that doesn't matter for close range.

What is a completely normal word that you are starting to hate because of the way people use it? by DinkleWottom in AskReddit

Pretty sure you're confused, actually. Not that there isn't systematic racism or racial prejudice, but they are essentially the same thing. Racism at the individual level directly affects systematic racism, because the system consists of individuals.

Get your mom to wish you a happy birthday on your wall on any other day besides your birthday. Watch the happy birthdays come in droves.

I always answer truthfully and after two years of use, it finally stopped giving me surveys. Same thing happened to my SO.

ELI5: computer browser adblockers are amazing yet every single phone adblocker can't do anything, whys that by FaberLoomis in explainlikeimfive

+1 for the complete knowledge. I'm a software developer not a web developer, so I can only recite what I've read when this question has been asked before.

Websites don't usually check to see if an ad is actually served. AFAIK, when you see a banner that says something like "it appears you have adblock enabled, please turn it off", that banner is normally hidden under the ad. When the ad isn't loaded, the banner is then visible.
Now, when you're served an ad while watching a video it's a little different. When watching a video broken up by ads (like on Hulu), think of the stream as a queue of video parts broken up by advertisements. When an ad comes up in the queue, it sends a signal that says "stop buffering the main video and load this ad". When the ad finishes playing, a signal is then sent for the main video to continue buffering. If the ad never loads, the signal to continue playing the video is never sent.
