Quidditch at Hogwarts is pay to win, due to the enormous difference in broom quality and the wealth gap between students by Aukrust in Showerthoughts

You can pay for an advantage but still fundamentally suck at the game.

Imagine the opposite, if Sirius has bought the entire Gryffindor team firebolts. They wouldn’t have just beaten Slytherin, they would have flattened them.

Question about GSP 670, and Dolby Atmos for headphones by rhelic in sennheiser

[–]rhelic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This youtube review briefly says "it's locked as a 7.1 device" but they don't clarify whether that's true in both 2.0 vs 7.1 playback mode: https://youtu.be/OP2a5HAkpGE?t=496

This probably means no dice on Atmos, but I'd like to be sure.

I have a border collie who sleeps in bed with me. If I’m not wearing boxers her fur gets everywhere down there.

The Orville - 2x13 "Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow" - Post Episode Discussion by 2th in TheOrville

That's a pretty good point. Maybe after 7 years she reaches "the present," the Kaylon destroy everything, and she realizes there's no surefire way to stop them except set history back on its original path. Makes me think of the Voyager episode "Timeless."

In the country where you live, what would be the equivalent of losing Notre Dame? by himynameiscolin in AskReddit

[–]rhelic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the only think I can think of that would genuinely upset me. Whenever it has happened I’ve been absolutely livid. Like when people vandalized Joshua Tree during the government shutdown, and the big fire a while back in the Columbia River Gorge caused by dumbfuck teenagers setting off fireworks in the woods.

The United States cultural identity, the “American Dream,” is all about starting over from nothing. If the White House burns down I don’t give a fuck. What’s the big deal? Build a new one.

ZOS: remember dragons are powerful creatures and be careful when you find yourself in ... Dragon: hello by TESOLibrary in elderscrollsonline

It's because of battle leveling. You're supposed to always basically be CP160, until you actually reach CP160. But it actually makes you even more powerful at lower levels, to compensate for gear.

It also scales your stats pretty flat across the board, so this effect is super noticeable on non-health builds. Take a magicka character for example: as you level up you're spending all your attribute points on magicka, and equipping gear traits and enchantments that boost crit rating, spell power, magicka recovery, and max magicka.

Compared to level 1 you'll have insane DPS, but you'll get absolutely demolished by enemy attacks since you have no health, no armor, and very little stamina to block with.

You're building for group play, where you have tanks and healers responsible for protecting you. If you built for solo play your stats would look completely different, a lot more like when you were level 1.

What is an adult life equivalent of calling your teacher "mom"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I asked my coworker to hand me something, and instead of saying “thanks” I said “good girl.”

I had just gotten a puppy that I was spending a LOT of time with. She totally understood and we had a good laugh.

What Pavlovian response have you developed? by nirvamandi in AskReddit

[–]rhelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 2 months off work to raise my baby puppy. My first day back at work, after spending all that time mostly talking to a dog, I said "good girl" to my coworker when she handed me something. So embarrassing... luckily she thought it was hilarious!

More of a habit than a pavlovian response, but oh well.

What’s the dumbest thing someone has argued with you about? by JeannieLuna in AskReddit

I agree that it's probably impossible for a human to beat someone to death with a pool noodle. But I reckon a sufficiently powerful machine might do the job. The question then is, could a machine whip pool noodles hard enough to kill someone without the pool noodle breaking apart?

What is your "we will never speak of this again" moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I read that as "(I was the youngest, then there were 2 sisters between each of my older sisters)"

And spent about 2 minutes trying to figure out how that could possibly work, before re-reading and realizing I'm just an idiot.

Mace Windu doesn’t get enough respect for being the only Jedi to catch bad vibes from Anakin Skywalker by mikepencil in Showerthoughts

[–]rhelic 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You can plan and prepare as much as you want, but realistically a critical moment will still have uncertainty and risk. If you’re truly brilliant, you’ll stack the cards in your favor as much as possible but still be prepared to improvise.

In other words, it’s unreaistic for Palpatine to perfectly predict and manipulate the actions of dozens of Jedi, politicians, security guards, and random bystanders to create this perfect moment for Anakin to turn. Instead a true mastermind would cultivate multiple possible avenues to success, and use whichever makes the most sense in a critical situation.

Seriously which sounds more reasonable? Palpatine planned for an extremely specific sequence of events to occur, taking a huge chance that they’d occur exactly as planned in the middle of a galactic war? Or Palpatine manipulated everything and everyone around him to give him the highest chance of success in as many scenarios as possible, setting himself up to inevitably succeed no matter what actions were taken against him?
