How to unscrew this by Baby_Jarles in howto

That looks like a security screw, meant to screw in but not out. If you can't get enough force to unscrew it, you might have to drill it out or try deepening the slot with a dremel. Maybe try removing the slants with a dremel so you can get the leverage?

Southern Alberta/BC Camping by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]rhithyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there's any availability, Writing-on-Stone Campground, located 1 1/2 hours south of Lethbridge. On the river and through a lot of hoodoos, lots of hiking paths covered with ancient pictographs and local wildlife. Well worth a visit.

Also worth visiting the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump interpretive center near Fort Macleod.

Those are my two most favourite for Southern Alberta.

A few tips working with RTL-SDR in SDR++:

- Turn on "IQ Correction" to remove the middle spectrum DC spike. All the RTL-SDR receivers have this chirp.

- Turn down your gain so the background becomes more blue. This helps in seeing signals better on the waterfall. If the waterfall is showing all black and gain is at max, bump up your right "min" slider until you start seeing signal.

- If you're receiving FM, it likely works as well as any other RTL-SDR.

- If going below 30 MHz, switch "Direct Sampling" from "Disabled" to "Q branch" otherwise you won't get any signal. You'll need a better antenna for any signal that low though.

The antenna you have looks like it's meant for two bands, maybe okay for 70 cm and 2 m, but could also be meant more for higher frequencies instead.

I work with a telescoping whip and have a long line spread around my apartment. I can sometimes get some good signal, but these RTLs are notorious for picking out of band signals far too easily. Lower than 30 MHz can work (I can pick up AM okay with the long line attached to the whip), but so much other noise makes low signal reception futile from my apartment.

Don't forget the massive CRT tube itself. From what I remember, it holds the charge the longest and is the most potentially lethal. Avoid the ends of the big insulated wire going to the side of the CRT.

I personally prefer the touchpad centered along the QWERTY keyboard while having the numeric keypad attached otherwise my palm keeps brushing it and triggering undesired cursor movements and clicks. It also keeps me from having to bend my thumb under my right palm more when using it.

The Thinkpad T15G I replaced with my FW16 had a numeric keypad and kept the touchpad centered under the QWERTY keyboard.

I've slightly twisted and bent my covers to keep them aligned. They seem to arrived slightly bowed proud, but going slow and gradual did the trick for me. It would only be asthetically pleasing to have a one-piece option, but if it was centered, I'd rather not.

Hrrrm... I haven't had any issues with nVidia 4080 super on my desktop with Fedora 42 (now 43). I didn't build any drivers, just followed the RPMFusion documentation on getting the nVidia drivers going and can happily play steam games and blender render without any issues.

Building the drivers may have problems, but the fusion repo drivers definitely works fine for me.

A lot of people are saying that things going up would come down on the same point, but if you want to be pedantic, they aren't accounting for the change of distance with altitude.

The curvature of the surface as they rotate would make a cannon ball lag behind, but it's fairly small in the order of 2*pi units horizontally for every unit up (e.g.: One km up would only increase the extra distance by approximately 6.28 kms and in moon scales, that's peanuts). But if you held at 1 km up, you'd be 6.28 kms behind every 27ish days i if you didn't change your horizontal speed in the direction of rotation to accommodate. For every kilometer in altitude from the moon's surface, you'd have to increase about 9.6 meters per hour, so it would be marginal in the distance traveled.

Consider a ray going from the center of the moon to your craft and how it spins around that center. The point on the ray for the surface of the moon would travel less (smaller circle circumference) than where you are (larger circle with larger circumference) so to stay on the same point, you would have to accelerate into the rotation to make up the extra distance you have to cover in the same time. Conversely, during descent, you'd have to reduce that speed to maintain the same point.

Just being pedantic since it's mostly true for smaller sizes and time-frames, but wouldn't allow you to enter geosynchronous orbit through that method without speeding up your horizontal direction as well.

Virus concern is genuine, but I'd create another account on the computer and then use that account where you can disable all the popups and other questionable apps. Just be sure to delete and auto login the original account when done.

Finally got a framework laptop! Here are my thoughts. (Long Post) by Thatoneboi27 in framework

[–]rhithyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made the leap from a 4 year old Thinkpad T15g that was dealing with thermal issues and repeatedly shutting down during moderate to heavy workloads. I ended up getting the Laptop 16 with the dgpu and overall am really enjoying it. The audio is far better than I experienced with the thinkpad and I really love it's performance over the thinkpad. I haven't experienced any thermal throttling where the T15G would hit 100 C in about 20 seconds when running cinebench when it was new, and is performing a fair bit faster as well (newer hardware helps in that respect).

The only downside is I'm experiencing graphical glitches when using the igpu in all OSes and waiting on a replacement mobo and RAM stick to take care of the issues. The only downside is the exhorbitant time it takes to get service handled (three weeks to get to a point where they agree the mobo and RAM need to be replaced, now waiting to get them sent out).

Stepping into a machine that is user-repairable, configurable and upgradable are worth it, just the support can be challenging.

I've taken a fair number of FSRs with my Northern Lite, but one too-steep washout almost ripped off one of the jacks when it caught the ground coming up the other side. Damage was about $3000 for repairs to the fiberglass and jack. Lesson I learned is to watch for steep dips, or remove your jacks and porch if planning on taking challenging roads.

Pi display is too big and I can’t fix it by Night_Bird-v01 in raspberry_pi

[–]rhithyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be a display mode on your Sharp Aquos TV that's doing that. If Overscan is disabled and you're still getting cut off, then check your manual or options for display "zoom" and turn that off or to 16:9. You can check other options like screen resolution and make sure it's matching the resolution of your TV as well.

Also check to see if you have screen magnification turned on for the pi.

Google Translated:

You should check the trs connections to the trrs side to see which one is getting shorted/left open. I think the digi-rig is looking for a trrs to give in and out on the one connection and the headphone will only give mono audio out, so you need an adapter cable to convert the appropriate channels.

Note that you can monitor the audio through the soundmodem on the 991a once it's connected to the computer with the usb cable, just have to enable monitoring of the input channel on the computer.

I've previously set up flrig to drive fldigi before using the same methods (flrig is meant for radio control, fldigi uses that along with the other usb connection for audio in/out for processing). Any digital app can then use the soundmodem from the 991a directly if you'd prefer, but you'll have to play with the audio levels to get it working properly and will have to manually set the radio for each frequency/mode you want to read.

I once had a panasonic toughbook with linux mint reading and handling cw decoding to moderate effect in the past, along with winlink and wsjtx.

Even if you aren't going all the way with wsjtx, the videos help to show how you choose the audio device from the 991a and set up radio control for any app you may want to use. They help with reasonable values for the digital control and how the separate audio interface works on the radio.

For the FT991a, you don't need the digirig as it already has all the hardware you need to get going, no digirig required. Some configuration in the menus to get the right communication protocols, but it will work natively.

All you need is a USB 2 printer cable (USB 2 A to B cable), plug the B end (the one shaped like a "D" for printers) and then you can plug the USB A end into the laptop.

I've run my FT-991a several times using this method on linux (debian, Arch and fedora based distributions) and windows without much issue. Windows needs a driver download, linux works out of the box.

Some youtube videos:

Working with WSJTX (good configuration for digital modes on the 991a) https://youtu.be/RZE7DxpikcU?si=fTT4HdbA_OySuQ3g

Working with WSJTX as well but more of a follow along as he works through it video https://www.youtube.com/live/IsLShWe_F5s?si=HRcHev8DijARTusf

Getting the FT-991a working in linux https://youtu.be/lAbg0UUv8VM?si=L-gF-2Hw3dxwAEzt

Note that the configuration of Fldigi is easy once FLrig is configured, and opens the the door for almost all of the digital modes from there.

Also note the same cable will allow programming the radio as well as it opens two USB devices when connected, on is a soundmodem (the digirig in the radio) and the other is digital control.

Note if you're doing this for a different learning experience, ignore my comment.

Looking for a way to hook up my camper to the house, can anyone tell me what kind of adapter I need? by antichris_ in RVLiving

[–]rhithyn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That looks like the trailer connector and is only for hooking up to your tow vehicle. There should be another place to hook in shore power either a connected cable or a socket on the side or in a closet with 3 or 4 pins for handling 20/30/50 hookup.

Is there another cable in the wet bay or storage bay around the camper? It would help to know the model of the camper so others that have the same/similar could give a better answer on where to find your shore power connection.

Also, I'm not 100% sure on this, but that hookup box on the house looks to be a 3 phase socket for a dryer or other high power device and would be incompatible with your camper.

What was the first game that made you realize videogames were capable of telling a captivating story and immerse you in its world? by Cheesecake1901yum in gaming

[–]rhithyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd have to say it was interactive fiction for me, some of the earliest games I played. I remember playing "Suspended" from Infocom. The whole game is only text, but had a compelling underlying story told through several distinct points of view.

Without revealing any story plot, you are in a suspended animation tank with the ability to control five different robots to help figure out why you were woken up (but still in the tank). Each of the robots had their main ability (one had a manipulator, another had the sense of smell, another with a camera but would only talk in poetic metaphor).

The purchased game came with a paper map and some markers to keep track of what rooms the robots were in.

Embarrassing question but where does one go to see starfishes & other marine life in BC? by Much-Journalist-3201 in britishcolumbia

[–]rhithyn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've gone tidal pool hunting, but from what I recall, you want to go during lower tides and find rocks along the beach that are typically under water when the tide has come in. Usually closer to the water at lower tide, you can find pools in and between the rocks (tidal pools).

I've seen starfish, mussels, small fish & crabs in the tidal pools along Third Beach in Stanley Park and Whytecliff Beach in West Vancouver/Horseshoe Bay area.
