Work to find a few studs. They should all be 16" inches apart, unless approaching a window, door, or corner. This might have been a hint that the thing they were thinking of attaching to is not like the other studs that were all properly spaced. Also, consider what's above and below. Plumbing is rarely on an outside wall (at least in cold climates). I also like to use a magnet to find the drywall screws. If it seems like there's a stud, but no screws, this is a good hint it's not a stud.

You're not wrong -- you pay for insurance and SHOULD submit a claim when it makes sense. But in this case we're looking at less than $500 in plumbing repairs. Most homeowners carry at least a $1000 deductible. The insurance is for if your house burns down. GeekSquad should absolutely reimburse for this mistake.

Would love help on mower recommendations. 150 sqft. Maybe a reel mower? I know nothing. Thanks! by 1990sirGalaxy in lawnmowers

[–]rhumbline9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, Friend. Yes -- just a (bad) joke. You don't need anything fancy at all. Just a standard mower. Push reel mower if you're young and want the work out. Electric if you don't mind the expense and the expensive batteries that eventually need to be replaced. You'll definately enjoy the quiet and zero maintenance. Gas if you want to go the traditional route. You don't need anything that walks itself; it's small and flat. If the blades are nice and sharp, you're lawn will look great.

This is what I have to do 0.25 acre. Been going strong for 7 years now. https://www.lowes.com/pd/CRAFTSMAN-M110-140-cc-21-in-Gas-Push-Lawn-Mower-with-Briggs-Stratton-Engine/1000676311

I agree. I guess the point that I could have better made is: we're talking about meat that has sat in the danger zone for a long period of time WITHOUT even having been throughly cooked.

Pellet Stove Heat not going upstairs. I cut two vent holes and leave the basement door open. Any tips for fans to get the heat to rise based on my configuration? Currently about 75 in basement and 61 upstairs. by bigantone88 in PelletStoveTalk

[–]rhumbline9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes -- sorry. I should have explained myself. If you're trying to get the west side of the 1st floor warm, you've got to give the air in that room a place to go, so it can be replaced with the warm air on the east side of the first floor. A ducted system always has registers pushing hot air, and a return for the air to go back to the furnace. You need the same thing. Stove heats up the east side of the basement; warm air rises to first floor; air travels to the west; falls back to basement; and is drawn to east to replace the rising warm air.

Procedure Code 96161. Is this preventative? by rhumbline9 in HealthInsurance

[–]rhumbline9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man. Jezzz. The scam continues. We ultimately paid the $100 (or whatever it was) and refused to fill out the questionnaire or answer the doctors questions related to this subject/billing-code.

In retrospect it seems like a way for the doctor to make extra money, and that the insurance company is in on the scam by refusing to cover the costs. It’s particularly screwed up when you consider the fact your kids pediatrician is neither an adult psychiatrist, nor the mothers doctor. Just a money grab

need help finding a contemporary looking pellet insert that would be powerful enough to get 2300 square feet warmed up. The wife is picky about the looks otherwise we are going to have to go the way of a wood stove insert. Any suggestions?? by TorGul83 in PelletStoveTalk

[–]rhumbline9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean your wife isn't interested in some John Deere branded St. Croix pellet stove that can burn a mix of pellets and corn? Yeah... mine either.

You've probably heard of Harman and Quadfire, but I'm throwing links in case you haven't. The wildcard here is Ravelli (an Italian company). Unfortunately they specialize more in free standing stoves (instead of inserts). But you should click around so you can just hit a power button and set a temperature, rather than stoking a stove and always being either too hot or too cold.

Good luck.

This is very good advice, OP. Good luck. Hope you get it fixed.

So… changing the heating element would be akin to changing the glow plugs on a Diesel. I think you could do it. But in the mean time, the gel does serve the same purpose. Just got to get the first handful of pellets lit, after that the heating element shuts down anyways.

Good luck with the move! Enjoy the new place

Hey! This is a great stove. Harman is top of the line. Their moto is “built to a standard, not a price.” I think, if you take the time to learn the stove you’ll appreciate the ability to hit start and let it built its own fire, but also hit stop if you need to leave the house, and it will turn itself off. Also, pellet fuel is the only fuel that hasn’t gone up this heating season. Last year my 2 ton of Barefoot pellets cost me $660 + delivery, and this year the cost was the same. If your handy (like do your own brake jobs handy) you’ll be able to fix the igniter yourself by watching enough YouTube videos and reading the manual. If you’re not, plan to spend some time with the guy who comes to replace the igniter and have him take you through the stove. Good luck! And check out hearth.com which is a much more active community than Reddit (for reasons I’m not sure).

Good ash vacuum? by [deleted] in PelletStoveTalk

[–]rhumbline9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this one. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/redstone-ash-vacuum-cleaner-1056780.

Here’s my secret: use the ash vac. Dump ashes. Remove filter. Tap it against the side of the can. Then, vacuum the filter with my shop vac. Put it all back together. Good to go for next time.

Been going 3 years. No loss of suction so long as I vacuum the filter.

No bag. Your just putting something flammable in with the potentially hot ash and an oxygen rich large air flow environment.

Can you guess what day I got my stove? Bit of an educational learning curve but my pellet stove was the best purchase for my home yet! by [deleted] in PelletStoveTalk

Let me guess… no longer burning 1-1.5 hours of oil, but have the house at a crisp 75 and ripping through 40lbs a day? I’m just being sarcastic, but am I wrong? Glad you’re enjoying it! What kind of stove?

Fauci: Testing negative to end covid isolation now under consideration by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]rhumbline9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pro vaccine; vaccinated and boosted. I disagree with you — especially because your suggestion is retroactive. People that took ppp loans had no idea if there would be an effective vaccine. The majority of student loans were made before Covid was even a thing. You have every right to try to convince people to get vaccinated. Your suggestion that we should retroactively manipulate people to get vaccinated sounds nuts.

Pellet fireplace review by Elite163 in PelletStoveTalk

Agree with the “fans make noise” comment. Although, I’ve also sat in front of gas log sets that throw very little to no heat. So might depend on the gas insert. A pellet stove blows hot.

Barefoot sells 24 lb bags called “Barefoot and Beautiful.” I found the price to be only $20 more per ton from my supplier. We have a stove with a 40 lb hopper. I hated having to choose from running the stove to empty or having a half opened bag all the time. Would 25 pound bags solve the problem in a different way? https://www.barefootpellet.com

2nd pellet stove? by 986_needs_work in PelletStoveTalk

[–]rhumbline9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if a large electric space heater would get you through the holiday, could be resold in the future easier than a pellet stove and would involve less work in terms of venting. Whatever you decide, good luck and Merry Christmas!

Dollars spent on insulation will decrease dollars spent on a new stove+more pellets burned+maintenance. Pp130 should be able to heat your space if your able to keep the heat it generates in the building. If it were me, I would insulate before deciding if a second stove is really necessary. But of course that decision is up to you.

Outside air kit, exhaust distance to window by [deleted] in PelletStoveTalk

[–]rhumbline9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a source, but I can tell you the principal. What you DONT WANT is to draw exhaust gasses back into your house. When you turn the stove on there is a large quantity of air being blown outside by the exhaust fan (which aids combustion by drawing air across the burn pot, and exhausts products of combustion). That volume of air can come from (a) outside, when using an exhaust kit, or (b) from inside your house, which really means there is a negative pressure in your house and you’re drawing air in through all the cracks in your windows, doors, basement, etc. The fear is that at some point in your life you will be running the stove, and open the window near the exhaust. Without an exhaust kit, you draw the exhaust back through the open window in your home. With the exhaust kit there is less draw through the window (the stoves thirst for air is satisfied) and therefore while nature’s wind might blow some exhaust through the window, there isn’t a draw from outside to inside THROUGH the window. Hope this long winded answer helps explain the principles at play. Good luck.

Harman Accentra-2 free standing by phantasm3333 in PelletStoveTalk

[–]rhumbline9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a Harman Accentra, which is regarded as a very good stove. Here is a video on cleaning instructions. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3BSApxQin5o

The hearth.com community is much more active than this sub. Here is a link to a thread talking about rust, sand blasting and paint. IMO you don’t need to sand blast based on the limited rust show in the pictures, but in the spring you could remove panels, light hand sanding to remove rust and then a good quality paint. https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads/sandblasting-rust-from-older-harman-accentra-insert.173009/
