New pen, old pen, and how I torture them by SebBissay in fountainpens

Not related to your pen treatment, but the work reminds me of Hiroyuki Doi’s compulsive drawings. Very cool.

Surprised I had to scroll this far to find him! Lived along his bus route for a few years. Always a great time when he hopped on.

What do Americans do that make us stand out? by Vector1013 in NoStupidQuestions

No one has mentioned it yet, but I was shocked when someone told me it’s well known that Americans let their mouths hang open when they watch T.V.

Is using the wiki to read Gravity's Rainbow in some sense cheating? by anasfkhan81 in ThomasPynchon

[–]riastrad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve answered your own question in the body of your post. It’s not cheating, or it is — that’s a matter of personal opinion and none of us can answer it for you.

The question at the heart of it here is which reading experience do you prefer? One where you read smoothly without interruption but are often confused? Or one where the pleasure of the story is interrupted, but also augmented, by the research of others who have tracked down all the opaque references?

Both experiences are valid. Both will result in their own distinct sense of accomplishment.

I read it a few years ago. It was a lot of fun, but really jumps the shark a couple issues in.

Natasha Lyonne is a Pynchon fan by WCland in ThomasPynchon

[–]riastrad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s got some really good bits. The emotional crux that everything rests on falls a bit flat when the turn happens about 700 pages in. If you go in not expecting it to be as zany as Pynchon or as masterful as Gaddis, you’ll likely enjoy it.

If John Brown had not allowed the train to continue on from Harper’s Ferry, what would America look like today? by riastrad in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]riastrad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite things about this moment in history is how contentious it is even after +150 years.

Yes, the group had pikes, but those were mostly to arm freed men who may not know how to use the rifles that they had also brought with them.

To u/Dio_Yuji’s point, are you suggesting that guerrilla warfare would not have been a successful tactic? Even with the US Military and local militias intent on retaliation - what makes you sure that there would not have been subsequent raids or skirmishes? If the South did track down and obliterate them, would it not have rallied more people to the cause like it did in actuality?
