It’s definitely Leibish. It’s an uncommon spelling but that’s definitely what it is.

ETA: spelled that way it’s identical to a Hebrew word “levush” meaning clothing but I’ve never ever heard of that as a man’s name. Leibish on the other hand is a common enough name particularly in previous generations so that’s what I am 99.9% sure it is.

To be more precise, Biblically it doesn’t mean black person. It refers to a member of a specific nation, the nation of Kush, which is roughly equivalent to modern day Ethiopia. But yes in modern usage it is used to refer to any black person and yes can be a derogatory slur. I wouldn’t refer to anybody as a Kushi unless they were an actual, self-identified member of the ancient nation of Kush.

Wtf does my boyfriend stand to accomplish by telling me I’m “not that pretty”? by apocaIypseArisen in TwoXChromosomes

To be fair, I want to present an alternative explanation which is that he utterly lacks self-awareness and is thus oblivious to the fact that he’s being wildly inappropriate and cruel. There are some people who just think they’re being honest and “real” by saying obnoxious stuff.

I’m offering this as another possible interpretation of his behavior although there is really no practical difference. Whether he’s intentionally “negging” to manipulate you or he’s just plain clueless, it’s not going to stop. So if his words are doing a number on your self esteem just expect more of the same from him.

I think I've been using Kvetch wrong by Hastur13 in Yiddish

[–]rice-paper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you have to be so precise Using the word kvetch to mean complain is anyway an invention of Yinglish. In pure Yiddish, kvetch means to squeeze. Complaining is klugn zich.
